So what about online gaming on the go? Are cell companies going to offer 4G subscriptions, or do you tether to your phone?

Not excited at either prospect. Guess it'll be single player on the go for me.

There is no way the dock will have extra power
.... At most it would just enable slightly higher clocks. The cooling would remain the same and there is no way to add any additional raw CPU or GPU power unless they thought up of a magically new complex architecture that enables simultaneous use of external GPU or CPU at high bandwidth in cooperation with the hand held components

The HH game gonna be upscaled of somekind.

But yeah most people thinking of nintendo magic technology that doenst exist lol

No, a powerful handheld, with the biggest first-party game library in the history of Nintendo. Positive thinking is good.

Yes, and they will all probably be ported to my phone..........pretty sure the graphics chips in iphones are pretty beast or good enough to run whatever they make.

I dont see at all how this thing is gonna appeal to the console player audience. "nobody" who wants play an TV gonna drop 300 $ (or more, its nitnendo lol) on a Handheld to play Handheld games in upscaled mode at home. especially if you consider the price and position of the competitors at the release time

Then worst case scenario, they're in the same position they were in with the Wii U, just now without having to split their resources.

Not power as in it's own CPU grunt, but power as in Watts. Tegra limited to 5W running on battery is a different beast than what could be supplied with a dock, especially if they have clever cooling rigged up in the dock itself.

Well I'm intrigued, but on the fence about the ergonomics. Still at the very least I am really glad that Nintendo won't be releasing any more awesome games in 240p.

Cautiously optimistic, but come on, Nintendo, I want to see confirmation, ergonomics, implementation details, OS, name, price, games! I want to see how detaching the controller works!

Anyway, maybe the dock has a port or a slot to connect hardware to boost the home experience, but I doubt it would be included in the dock, since it would make more sense to just bundle a basic dock with the console and keep the base price down. Even so, this would be conplex both for the end user ("I hafta plug in the expansion pak to the dock and detach the controller from the console and put the console into the dock? I dunno, man") and for the developers (supporting multiple configurations, but Neo and Scorpio...), so I don't know. It sounds somewhat unlikely?

SHARED LIBRARY OUTPUT THO

How many people want to play console-tier games on the go really? Is there truly a mass market for that at this point with people attached to their phones?

Hand helds aren't just for taking out of the house. 9/10 times I am using my vita or 3ds while watching tv or lazily browsing the internet. They're great multitasking devices.

Something about being able to just put them into sleep mode on a whim and wake them up instantly just has a lot of appeal if you expect to get interrupted by other stuff frequently.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
This is EXACTLY what I wanted: one device that will let me play everything Nintendo releases. The fact that I'll be able to play Breath of the Wild from bed and Fire Emblem on the TV makes it even sweeter.

For those of you who know about hardware: what are the odds that this thing will have a) a nice screen, b) decent battery life, and c) a price point at $250 or lower? Is that too much to hope for?

a) a nice screen
b) decent battery life
c) a price point at $250 or lower

Pick 2

It's pure speculation, but Nintendo did have a patent on an external computing device for extra power, and if nothing else I imagine they'd change the clock speed and such when docked since it no longer needs to worry about battery life and the like

yeah i know it's speculation. But i hope there is truth in it.

thanks for the laugh
This feels more like a device designed for a world where they see smartphones ruling, which would be true in the domestic market.

if people are happy with their smartphones, what's the point in making this portable at all?

i mean the whole reason handheld is dying is because people are quite content with whatever free time they have on the go being filled by thumbing around their phone screen, with a dedicated handheld being regarded cumbersome and superfluous.

their solution is to make their new handheld even bigger, with some bizarre aspiration to also serve as a home console which is a generation behind all the others and will likely have a much reduced library?

it's a handheld that doesn't really sound portable combined with an underpowered home console with a small library. the complete opposite of the current trend to have as much power at home as possible while having ultra portability and utility on the go.

Ok what if

-Base handheld unit $200, can play on TV by itself with just an HDMI. Wii U-like power.
-Dock $200, powers up the handheld to Neo/Scorpio levels, does nothing without the handheld.

Sold separately. That way they can actually price the thing like a handheld while also appealing to the console crowd.

People expecting it to be 200$ are insane.

If its X2, and it upclocks when docked, you more or less get both. Its really going to depend on how well this thing runs in two different profiles.

I'll believe it when I see it.
Nintendo really needs to control some information quickly if they want to control the message.
This not like the neo that is a simple ps4 revision.

This is the smartest move Nintendo could have made. Go for a lower-cost option and sacrifice power for flexibility. They can't and won't compete with Sony and MS on the console power arms race. They are clearly going after a larger casual market but at the cost of some of their hardcore fans who don't care about a portable option.

Pretty sure Nintendo is trying to recapture consumers they brought on board with the Wii but then moved on.

Bring it on. I hated this idea at first, but I'm ready for something different. NX and PC is going to be a killer combo, pretty much like 3DS and PC :p

I wonder about the size of the handheld. Hope it'll fit into my pocket, although without the clamshell design I'd worry about scratches.

People have been saying it's a hybrid since discussion about the console began. I stopped going into NX threads because the circular and dominating discussion about it being a hybrid made reading speculation boring.

Maybe the reason people were saying it was because all of Nintendo's comments and other evidence highly suggested it. I mean just because you find speculation boring isn't really a reason you should doubt it. That's silly.

There needs to be a standard ergonomic controller bundled with this device for home use. If they truly want to market this as a hybrid.

absolutely this.

It's my worry about all this. The Wii U gamepad screen is fucking *trash* if you are playing anything besides the BC games so let's hope Nintendo goes for at least a 1080p screen to match the TVs. This isn't pre-iPhone 4 anymore, handheld devices are all Retina/whatever-android-marketing-term screens now.

Could this have chips on carts again?

What kind of processor could Nintendo get for say $10? First party games $70 with the Super FX2!

Thats the player 2 controller
Oh... Hmm.. Wait now that might make sense. So there must be a normal controller with the dock for home use, and the detachable ones from the screen can be combined and used as a 2nd controller. Interesting indeed...

I hope games played on tv don't take a graphical hit because they're made for tablet size screens.

enigmatic_alex44

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Wow!!!

They actually did it! First Pokémon Go, now a 2 in 1 system, King Nintendo's heading back to Wii era levels of relevance, I can feel it!

Looking forward to the possibilities:
- no more disc scratches to worry about, cartridges will likely eliminate load times too
- expecting Xbox 1 level graphics or close to it so I can see slightly scaled down ports of FFVII Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3
- hoping for all currently owned VC games to be transferable to the new machine
- hopefully no more of those rancid gyro controls since this isn't BC
- ......what if the cartridge slot lets you play the 3DS library? I know there's no BC with Wii U but that would be amazing!
- imagine a $250 console and $40 games? Huge bonus vs. the Bone and PS4 with their $60 games

The Wii U is a great system but I'm happy to see Nintendo aiming for that #1 spot again. This is too much for a Tuesday. Whew!

ARM when all your rivals and PC use x86?

Haha RIP Nintendo.

Unless you're going with the WiiU game development or just ending the console approach please just end your hardware department it's clear that you have no idea what you're doing in the West. The sales data clearly shows power and graphics sell in the West.

Now in Japan I can see this working somewhat.

If they want to combine their home console and portable divisions, x86 is not viable due to the higher power draw. ARM is significantly more efficient with lower thermals.

Is t it possible when they say that it's easy to port XB1/PS4 games to the NX handheld they really mean it because the games are running at 540p resolution instead of 720p+?

What if it runs in a low-power mode when not docked and it goes Full-HD when connected to the TV?

Either way, my hype levels are over the roof, even with that potentially crappy specs.

For someone who already has a PS4 or an Xbox One, there is really no downside to this. You buy a single game and it can run on both. You can play it on your HD TV or take it with you on the go. You only have to buy a single device to play wherever you want. Nintendo only has to focus on a single device as well rather than splitting its resources into two. You will get access to a bigger Nintendo library for less money than before, and you will have more freedom than before.

Of course, it's not going to have the third-party support of the others, which can limit its success. But I think it will blow away previous Nintendo consoles in terms of first-party software.

I really want the NX to be powerful to run at least Final Fantasy XV. But what about those job reports for the Unreal Engine? And the fact that Nintendo is looking into making other game engines work for their newest system?

Im getting MAJOR supplemental computing device vibes from the "docking device."

I.e this patent

1 - Upscales the handheld games for TV
2 - Provides the power capable for home console only games.

EDIT: sorry if already disscused

What are the chances the device is sold primarily as a handheld and the dock is an add-on? There would a bundle, of course. I like this idea because it means Nintendo could use a 720p screen in the system to help lower cost, improve battery life and render higher quality graphics, albeit at a lower resolution, while the dock could improve the games to 1080p and "console quality" in general.

I don't see a $200 dock selling anything. $50-100 and going up to PS4/XB1 levels maybe.

This thing is going to be such a leap over the 3DS it'll be incredible. It'll be a generational leap we haven't seen in ages. And that's all I've wanted for about 4 years now. I might never even hook it up to my TV.

What are we thinking regarding screen size and resolution? The X1 or X2 could do 1080p gaming, but it makes far more sense to make the screen 720p and downclock everything to get more battery life.

A 5' 720p screen would be fine by me having come from the 3DS's 240p monstrosities with the added bonus of some serious power behind it.
