Sorry everyone, Grave of the Fireflies exists and trumps your paltry children's movies and shows.
Even worse is when you realize the author of the original story based it on his actual life and what happened to his sister.
There was an episode of American Dad where Jeff was abducted by Rogers people. He learns of a way that he might be able to go back - by proving to a jury that his love to Haley was true Love. If it's not true love, then they take his privates. He has to have his thoughts read by a being called The Majestic. A depressing (yet upbeat) song, aptly named Majestic starts, and his mind is probed. Even though it only projected Jeffs bad memories, it was still a depressing moment for me. The look of defeat, followed by Jeffs actions killed me. In the end, it was a plot by the alien leader to never allow people to return by having the Majestic only show bad memories, but those few moments were brutal.
I found the song, Majestic, by Wax Fang, and I love the blasting it. Depressing, yet not at the same time I feel.
Everyone's going to post Futurama dog, but I've always felt that Land Before Time was the epitome of sad cartoon moments.

Is this current season? I need to catch up.
I felt the exact same way- great show before, but that episode really blew me away. A few of their musical numbers have had great feelings and emotions attached to them, it's one thing about the series I really love.I was already in love with the show, but that episode was when I realized how excellent AD! had become that they were able to do something so affecting.
Best Batman. Even worse/better when you think about what Bruce named his dog.
