NPD - Xbox One was the top selling console of Aug 2016

Second month in a row, but no surprise here. As many already expected.

Microsoft PR

"Thanks to our fans and their excitement for new Xbox One games and the recently launched Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming and HDR for video and gaming, Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in August, according to NPD Group."

dat UHD comment, really wasn't necessary. They are just pushing it now lol

I'm sure they are filming commercials highlighting it as we speak. Their shameless PR about it tells me they were surprised Sony decided not to include the feature.

I have.

I bought one JUST for the UHD player.

I saw Mad Max at my friends place, fuck me. It was mindblowing on 4K HDR setting. I would say almost as good as the cinema quality. He has 75" Vizio P series. I am actually thinking of getting but too expensive.

That's great and I mean that, but your average consumer isn't.

Well, your average consumer isn't going to be buying any of these new platforms for things like 4k and HDR. Doesn't mean they aren't nice features to have for those who are interested and the same holds true for UHD Blu-ray.

What's wrong with the UHD Blu-ray part? It's a fact not an attack. Wasn't Sony throwing mad shade at the Xbox One before release? People are so sensitive about Microsoft PR.

Actually they are. A friend that is a Supervisor for a Best Buy Stores says they have been selling a ton of Xbox One S systems. They actually put a bulk stack in the TV section. As of right now consumers that are buying a 4k Set and they want physical media have 2 choices....a $399.99 Samsung UHD player or a $299.99 Xbox One S. For his Store, they have been selling very well since they are pushing it to new TV owners and being a $100 cheaper than the other UHD player is pretty big incentive.

UHD and HDR were the primary reasons I picked one up. Once you watch UHD Blu Rays with HDR there is no going back. The difference when done right is staggering.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that comment. After all it is a fact, but we have heard that so many times in past 2 days, from their PR folks, twitter that now it seems they are over doing it. But again may be now we won't hear that for a very long time.

I totally see that. People are suckers for add ons. My parents bought a smart 4K TV and then bought a smart BluRay player because it was smart and I was rather puzzled, but I didn't want them to feel bad.

For Best Buy, that's just standard/good product placement. I can imagine the UHD player manufacturers aren't the best pleased.

They are nice features, but I think people are overselling it's importance right now as to why the Slim is selling decently.

I know noone who didn't buy a Playstation also for the DVD/Bluray capability.

I mean sure, but Blu Ray being in the PS3 didn't push it's success in the console space.

You're probably right. I mean, alot of people are. When the PS4 Slim was leaked and confirmed not to have one, almost everybody was convinced Neo would've been the one to have it.

MS should continue to drive that point home in my view. I don't care how Sony wants to spin it: not including UHD Blu-ray in a device centered around the 4k experience is baffling. Doubly so when you consider how much Sony has invested in the Blu-ray format over the years.

They are nice features, but I think people are overselling it's importance right now as to why the Slim is selling decently.

Well yeah, this is probably true. It's not all that important yet (and heck, maybe it never will be), but it's absolutely a feature MS should continue to tout.

Some are, and besides? Why not flaunt a feature that your competitor doesn't have? I would. I'm honestly surprised the PS4 Pro doesn't have it, so I feel like Microsoft is probably in a good position between the S and the Scorpio. Not necessarily because of Microsoft doing anything, but just primarily based on the fact that the PS4 Pro isn't gonna make as big a splash as it potentially could have. Microsoft still has to deliver on Scorpio though, which they might not do. I just think Microsoft is in a good position at the moment.

Pretty much this.

What's wrong with them marketing their product?

Sony did much worse when this gen started. They road on MS mistakes. The always online, the used games, every game will be 1080p 60fps my ass.

But when MS does it, its twisted.

Anyway. Congrats MS and Sony for another healthy month for this industry.

Now, bring me Scorpio.

Well deserved. The XB1 S is a beautiful console. I wonder if Sony sales will remain low until the Pro is released. A new Xbox revision plus the uncertainty surrounding the PlayStation brand probably hurt sales

Steam is running low for Sony in North America. There are no Japanese exclusives out yet to help boost it like the momentum the PS3 eventually had. Since western developers are basically multiplatform developers, so the point of difference appears to be exclusives, which thanks to the Xbox One S the mainstream is noticing an underappreciated backlog of.

It's like the most favourable outcome for a Wii U redesign happening for Microsoft.
