Longterm follower of Max, he says weird shit all the time whilst replacing characters names and shit. I really do think he meant to say Ninja.

It happens.

Watching the video it's clear that he was trying to do some kind of odd attempt at a tongue twister and he fumbled it spectacularly. It comes across as completely non-malicious and an honest mistake though.

Yeah, this pretty much nails it.

Some of the responses in this thread though, jeez.

Was it in poor taste? Sure. Was it an innocent slip? I think so.

I'm not sure it's threadworthy or deserving of outrage. At best I figure most would just shake their damn head and move on.

This is my post right there. This guy said it the way I tried saying it.

Ridiculous thread. He said the word by accident, meaning no offense to anyone. I can't believe there are people so oversensitive they're willing to shame him for a slip of the tongue. On the other side though some of the responses show a total lack of care or civility.

Can't freakin' humanity for once stand on a middle ground in these matters?

Of course people shouldn't go throwing around racial slurs, that said if someone happens to misspeak can we not hang him for it. Pleeeeease?

Intent doesn't matter.

What?

O_O

As a black person, in the context he said it, I have no problem with it, and I dislike when anyone says the word even in slang ways. Now if he was belittling somebody and trying to ruin his day and that word was used to add to the insults, that would not be ok.

The voice of sanity.

wtf at these replies so far

Quite telling..

Edit

lol, "by accident" he says..

What the actual fuck am I reading? It's still used as a racial slur against black people, are you seriously insinuating that the only reason the word has value is not due to the extensive history behind the word but it's just because black people feel hte need to get offended? The fuck!!

I don't know where you live, but in the modern world nigger doesn't even exist anymore. Except for "in the hoods" or spoken out by really racist trailer trash people, the word doesn't hold up in the modern society anymore.

And yes, newsflash, it's used by black people to get offended. It's called the black card, the race card, whatever you want to call it.

GET OVER THE WORD and live your life already.

Yeah considering the context he used it in, he wasn't trying to make it a racial slur!
This is what starts the most confusion, because you could walk past a group of young minorities and every other word is Nigga this or nigga that...

So we usually say that the context a word is used in, should determine whether it's offensive or not...

Max has a gaf account, so looking at some of the replies in this thread I´m sure he is anxious to come here and explain himself. Let´s just wait.

Max tries to do a dumb tongue twister but somehow says nigger then tries to replace it with ninja after realizing it what he said making it look even worse. He most likely didn't mean it but it can still be rightfully offensive to people.

The effects of an action matter more than the intent of an action.

That doesn't mean intent doesn't matter. In context it's quite clear that it was completely accidental. Yes, the effect matters and yes, he should apologize, but to imply that intent is trivial is to ignore all context of this situation, which is completely fucking ignorant. Tunnel vision is not something that should be championed when it comes to situations involving race

This I was playing COD last night and head that at least 30 times by blacks, whites and hispancis along with words I find much more offensive. They are words they mean nothing and if you get offended by words than your weak minded. Should he have said it? No but stop trying to be offended but stupid stuff!

I think this comment is worse that the person you're replying to. Not sure how you managed to do so.

Chindogg is right tho', do you really believe that everyone can use the N ending with a R word in the FGC ?

No, I believe that the FGC is one place where you have people show up like this to defend "one of their own" and in turn spout racist stuff like in this thread. I didn't say anything about the FGC being the only place where this happens, I didn't say anything about the FGC being bigoted in general or whatever you or Chindogg are trying to read into my post. It was an exaggerated response to an exaggerated question.

Like, I'm sure a lot of people think it's an unfortunate slip of the tongue, and he just needs to apologize for the slip-up, so the rush to preemptively try to strike down any potential dissenting views was unnecessary. Even the OP leaves interpretation up for discussion. I don't think they were saying the guy needs to get raked over the coals. Some of the replies here are much worse.

In nonshocking typical fashion alot of post in this thread are way worse and more disgusting then what the thread was originally about. The level of ignorance and stupidity on display in some of these post is shocking but not surprising .

Just watched the video and honestly... Meh? Yes, he said something that is very offensive to many but the context in which it was used honestly sounded like a tongue twisting mistake. Nothing compared to what comes out of middle-schoolers mouths these days regarding that word (Sheeesh).

Because a few people brought Ryan Davis using the f-word in the heat of the moment up:

He not only immediatly apologized at length but also went ahead and wrote up a blog post called "My Worst Moment".

Now, no one would think Ryan Davis would hate gay people if you knew him at all so you could say that was totally unnecessary and everyone should stop being offended! You'd be an idiot if you would, though. Because Ryan immedtialy recognized the destructive and toxic effect of someone like him just dropping a word like that and acting like it was a normal thing that just kinda happens here and there. He knew it would further incentivize the casual use of that word to describe something you don't like. It would incentivize hat speech as a normal part of the english language.

This can happen. It should never happen but it can. If it does, however, don't write it off or ignore it, but confront yourself with what you just said and apologize for it. Especially if you are active in a community that is known for an overusage of slurs and hate speech.

Aside from the OP nobody in this thread is calling for the streamer's head. Unless I missed one or two posts it's literally zero people. This oversensitivity some people are railing about is a fucking illusion.

I mean, it's bad, but I struggle to be too outraged since most Twitch channels are "How did chat sneak a racial slur into text-to-speech/song requests this time?" anyways.

Especially since it seemed like it just slipped out.

I'll come back to this in a few hours, running some errands first.

Then we can a nice chat about some of y'all's behaviour.

Alright!

First off, I watched the video. I give Max the benefit of the doubt, not just for the evidence presented but taking into account his good rep established here over the years. That doesn't mean that a healthy dose of side-eye isn't coming his way, but it's okay to chalk it up to a slip of the tongue and move on.

What I find considerably more comical is the rush by several posters to show their asses in futile attempts to shut down the discussion. Whether out of concern for a streamer they like, or - more likely - preemptively shout down anyone who might take offense, the results are the same. Casual dismissal? Gone. They-say-it-why-can't-we-say-it? Gone. Thread whining? Gone. Intent doesn't matter? Gone. "Outrage culture"? Gone.

Listen - preemptively yelling about "outrage" not only exposes a dangerously Philistine pig ignorance on the topic at hand, but social issues in general. You're saying, "it doesn't matter to me, so it shouldn't matter to anyone". That's asshole behaviour, and it will get you clipped.

What you and your ilk need to understand are these 3 key pillars:

1. The narrative is not within your control
2. The discussion will take place without you
3. Nothing of value will be lost

Those of you who received temporary bans are encouraged to view this as a reprieve. Take the opportunity to self-examine why it was so important to jump in and tell people why they shouldn't be offended when literally nobody in the thread had said they were.

Those of you who were permed? You won't be missed.

This thread is a fucking graveyard. What were some of you thinking?

But this sort of thread is eye opening that even a place like GAF isn't above this sort of behavior. And I think sometimes we need a reminder of that.

Edit: On the other hand a lot of those people caught bans so maybe GAF is above this type of behavior. I think it's just eye opening because the reality is the shit that's all over the rest of the internet is here too.

I'm honestly stunned at how many GAFers (who are now banned) don't have an issue with this. You don't just say this word on accident unless you are a racist prick. Language like this shouldn't be tolerated anywhere, especially on GAF.

That graveyard, wow. Can't say you guys didn't deserve it. Since some were temps, hopefully you guys can collect yourself and realize why what you did wasn't cool.

what was he even trying to say? it honestly sounds like he was rhyming a bunch of words and said it by accident because it was just a random rhyming sound

not that he actually used the slur by accident

Thank God. This needs to be pinned at the top of GAF. It feels like way too many threads on here devolve into an early afternoon Fox News segment within minutes when it comes to social issues or topics of diversity. I've honestly mostly quit even bothering to visit those threads.

Beyond these types of threads, I'm tired of people responding to any and all criticism of anything ever by just screaming "outrage culture" and ignoring any of the content of the critique. It's a fucking plague these days.

Not a good look. I popped in a few times last night took look at For Honor. Everytime he'd do that execution he'd make up some weird combination of words to call it. Could be it was just an unfortunate accident since he was just kinda spewing random nonsensical words. Though if that was the case I'm surprised he didn't instantly go "oh shit" and apologize. Maybe he did, but clip doesn't show it. Looks more like he just kinda swept it under the rug hoping no one would notice. I'm going to guess chat's response didn't help things either.
