News: Jill Stein's going to file for a recount in WI, MI & PA if she can raise the money—will announce on FB shortly.

lol fuck you Jill Stein

Excited for Hillary to be blamed, again, for someone else's mistakes.

She isn't going to scrounge up her 5% from this.
Half of me looks at those states listed and wonders if she's buying into the "Trump won by hax" conspiracy theories and, in her heart of hearts, knows Trump is worse than Clinton and is taking a political step Clinton can't.

The other half is going "lol Stein."

Good thing we're not a socialist country.
As typical, you are preoccupied with labels rather than actual policy and problems.

Actually, I think he's got more positions filled than Obama did at this time.
Fair enough. I think one of the major things the Obama team did was announce a slew of economic positions at once in late Nov/early Dec? Because the world was falling down over their ears.

Betsy Devos is an insane choice if you know her history in regards to education. My mother who is a teacher in Michigan is completely despondent over this choice.

This is going to get worse.

Could someone who is knowledgeable about this subject please answer some questions I have?

Assuming that efforts to stop Net Neutrality in the US from going away fail, what will realistically happen? Everybody keeps saying RIP Internet but I would like some more insight into this.

I understand that it would allow ISPs like Comcast to slow down or otherwise stop people from visiting certain sites, but realistically, what sites will be affected by that? Youtube, Netflix, definitely. But what about lower-end sites like Deviantart, Fanfiction.net, Pixiv and others that are mostly just pictures and text? Would ISPs outright block those just because?

I live in Canada, so this won't specifically affect how I access the internet, but I'm concerned about many content creators living in the US who will be severely limited or even crippled by this. Jim Sterling, Nostalgia Critic, AVGN, Thousands of Patreon users, etc.

It's why I feel like Net Neutrality going away is still unlikely even with the latest FCC appointments. It's in more danger than before, yes, but that won't stop people from fighting. Which leads me to my next question.

How much time would they have to get rid of it, and subsequently how much time would we have to fight for it? They can't so much as kill it at the drop of a hat without warning can they? I say this because the last time this was an issue I remember people fighting. People were all over it. I'm pretty sure companies like Netflix and Google even stepped in at some point.

I don't expect the Internet to just outright give up.

If any part of our election process is under scrutiny it is best for our Democracy to investigate possible forms of corruption that have merit. A call like this is not a good political play for anyone on the losing side of the ballot, but I doubt Donald is going to go out of his way to verify that our system is in working order.

Not having any knowledge of the MIchigan public school system, will you share what are we looking forward to?

Are we looking at a "no child left behind" issue or an " 'unpaid workers' from Africa" textbook thing?

If Trump wins in 2020 I don't see the Republican party viable in 2024. The world will likely literally be on fire by then and the demographic changes will be too strong.

Yeah. Trump temporary saved the GOP for what they will have to deal with in the future.

Obama's team did actual vetting, which takes time, even if they started months before the election. Trump is just randomly meeting with people, thinking about them for five days, and making decisions.

No experience, BUT, pretty insane.

At this point I'm only shocked when the least insane candidate is picked. I'm still desperately hoping Mittens wins SoS to save the U.S. some sort of dignity, but my expectations are at rock bottom.

I also love how we are draining the swamp with Republican mega donors now. Seems like a legit way to get things started.

An "Every chance she gets to destroy the public school system on any level, she will" issue.

The woman has never been a teacher or any sort of school official, by the way, and now she's running this department. I currently teach at a private school and even I can tell you: This is going to be a disaster for public education in our country. Absolute disaster.

She's all about school choice, vouchers, charter schools, etc. Public schools are the enemy.

How is Trump choosing these people? He's not even going for qualified. He is literaly scraping from beneath the bottom of the barrel at this point.

DeVos is a nightmare scenario. Wow.

In terms of Shumer...I think he would have been a good minority or majority leader with a President Hillary Clinton. If you want a fighter playing hardball with President Trump you need someone who is an asshole and tough, preferably from Chicago. Durbin.

With two questions:

1. Did you support me in some significant fashion?

2. Is there a certain sector of government you particularly enjoy trying to dismantle or regress?

Plus a lot of the usual Republican policy folks don't want to work with him (especially on the national security/foreign policy side).

Really depressing waking up and seeing this administration look worse and worse every day. Earlier today it was the whole NASA scrapping and climate crap and now he's going to royally screw education and I would not be surprised if this idiot tries to completely gut it in favor of private schools. The next four years are going to be so messy. I hope the people who were too fucking lazy to vote are happy with themselves at the choice they made and I wonder how Trump voters are going to be to reacting in the next four years after he cripples their households even more, guts their jobs, scraps education, and fucks the planet up.

It is hard to even muster up any optimism at this point. The country and the entire world are going to be irreparably damaged over the course of the next four years and if Republican's keep pushing their shitty voter suppression they can lock down the country in their favor. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some sort of a civil uprising if that happens and the results of any kind of war would be devastating.

For the giant providers, I think the most likely thing is they just slow everything down accross the board, and then ask companies to pay them for faster service to their customers. Non-video websites might be able to do without paying for the faster access, but all video streaming might be. I don't know how expensive they'll make it.

FCC already had to stop Comcast from blocking P2P technology, and AT&T from blocking Skype, Google Voice, and Facetime. So at the very least there will be a return to that sort of thing.

I don't know if any of the big providers will be brave enough to stop all streaming services outside the ones they approve, but I'm sure smaller providers in not very competitive markets will surely try at some point.

Fixed.

Because let's be honest, that's the whole point behind Charter Schools.

Its always about busting the unions. Always.
True, that's probably a main goal of a lot of charter school proponents.

What a fun time. If all goes according to plan, I'm heading to grad school in the spring to switch careers and become a teacher. At least I live in Los Angeles.

Yep this is why I've been a wreck the past 2 weeks. Logically I don't see any hope. And. In less than 2 months everything is going to hell. And at least as a minority goodbye to my civil rights.

Stein is not launching the campaign because she believes she can get more votes out there, c'mon.

Maybe she feels guilty and wants to ease her conscience.

Somebody found something interesting:

VPMPDkX.jpg

about Mussolini by Luigi Barzini.

Doesn't sound like Trump at all, nope.

Not at all.

Just wanted to say...I'm so dang proud of my country. I was banned for a couple weeks (well it ended like a week ago but i didnt post) so I missed the election, but I've been walking on clouds ever since. First time in my life I've been so into politics.

..and hopefully you get banned again, as clearly you're just trolling for reactions. "So dang proud", "walking on clouds"? People are terrified that Trump will actually follow through with his promise and harm them, but I'm sure you couldn't give two fucks about that. God knows what there is to be "proud" about, and what it is that's making you so ecstatic except the obvious, which is Trump's empowering of neo-nazis, bigots, and racists. Glad you're so fucking excited about the most pathological liar in the history of US politics.

With all this debate about whether to pursuit identity politics over economic politics in the Dem party going forward, I thought this is worth considering from Ohio:

“Look, I’m as progressive as anybody, okay? But people in the heartland thought the Democratic Party cared more about where someone else went to the restroom than whether they had a good-paying job,” he complained. “‘Stronger together’ doesn’t get anyone a job.” [...]

It's from a Democratic chair in Mahoning County, Ohio, where Dems have always won by double digits but Hillary barely eked out Trump by 3 points.

The problem also si that Hillary did visit Youngstown twice, and Bill Clinton visited four times. It wasn't enough:

“If it weren’t for the [auto] bailout, they’d all be out of jobs! It’s mind boggling. Maybe Hillary just didn’t talk about it enough.”

“A lot of people told me, ‘I just want a change.’ I’d say, ‘He’s not going to bring your job back.’ But a lot of Democrats, lifelong Democrats, would reply, ‘I just want change so much,’” Getswicki recalled.

The rest of this DailyKos post makes a rather sombering point to Democrats who say that they shouldn't even concentrate on the midwest anymore because of the prospect of winning in the Sun Belt:

Add to all that, we lost North Carolina by 5% and Georgia by almost 6%. And that was running against Trump. Only if we swing Texas (38) does this makes sense. But we lost Texas by 9%, when I had hoped we’d pull to within 5% based on Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric.

In contrast, the margin of victory in each of MN, WI, MI and PA was under 2%. Why does it make sense to put your hopes in states you lost by 5-10%, and give up on states that you lost by 2% and have won consistently for decades. What level of pique requires that kind of thinking?
