NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Probably a longshot but does anyone in the US have a copy of Metal Storm you might be looking to part with? I'm looking to buy for a fair price but I'm looking to pay less than the current ceiling on eBay....

The good news is the punishment for death in Shadowgate is you start back on the previous screen. You die all the time and it's not painful at all.

It's fun to use every weapon on Self and see what happens. Try using Torch on Self.

Bionic Commando for the NES is a really fantastic classic, I loved it back when I first played it in the late '80s or early '90s and it's still great. However, the one thing that holds it back is that some of its sequels improve on it in several ways, including making movement on the grappling hook feel freer and easier and adding save systems.

On that note, Bionic Commando for the Game Boy, released a few years after the NES game, is an entirely different game from the NES one and adds a save system and slightly improved controls. Then, some years later, NST's Bionic Commando: Elite Forces for the GBC is even better; that game is a personal favorite of mine, and just plays so incredibly well! It's so, so much fun to swing around in that game... it's awesome. And then of course you have the newer Bionic Commando Rearmed games, which are also pretty good even if they add in unnecessary things such as a jump button.

So yeah, the sequels are probably even better, but still, the original NES game is still great. I don't know if I'll ever finish it though, it's really hard and has, of course, like way too many NES games, no saving and limited continues... requires a lot of memorization and repeat play to get through. (I have beaten the GB and GBC games, by the way.) Maybe I'll give it another try soon...

Tried the "new" official Disk System power cable I ordered and it's still buzzing and not working. Gonna have to buy a RAM adapter. Ah well.

I've been playing Bionic Commando here and there, but I need to finish my paper for my class first. It's how I remember it though, fun and very very unique in how it presents the mechanics for the bionic arm. I found this game I've always been a bit better at than others for some odd reason. I've always been able to do weird things with bouncing off of people's heads, bouncing against walls etc to really position myself well along with cancelling out the bionic arm to move quickly.

I want to see if I can try to finish it again however, as it has been years since I last saw the ending. I own Hitler no Fukkatsu so I think I'll try to go that route this time.

Played some more Shadowgate, and the deaths in this game is hilarious lol. Anyways, it is really hard to get anywhere. I feel like I am stuck and without options every few minutes - but then somehow i try everything and find something (that I often thought i had already tried) and manages to open another door. Cool game!

The Nes has such an awesome library, once again really hard to pick. But in the end, I had to pick what i nominated, so
Metal Gear
it was.

Looking forward to Crystalis first though!

That's right, I've quoted my own post so as to remind y'all to vote! I'll do it again if I have to.

Crazy to think it's already gonna be 2017, and here we are still playing the NES. Turns out you can't keep a true classic system down!

Well, not many modern games can touch the awesome Nes-games when it comes to gameplay. They are all presentation and storytelling, which is not very interesting imo. Thus, I keep digging into the secrets of the Nes and other retro-systems instead.

I'll talk you all through Battletoads if Battletoads wins. I'll show you that it's not that hard. It'll be a fun time. Some of the toughest parts of the game are skippable because of the warps. There are areas where you can get infinite lives by exploiting the reappearing 1-ups and point system. Every time you get 100,000 points you get an extra life, and 1-ups will reappear every time you die, so you can keep getting the 1-up, dying on purpose, and building up points.

Looking at this again, it seems that you didn't pick up the torches on the walls. This is the only way to permanently screw yourself in Shadowgate. If you run out of torches, you die. You'll start back in the previous room like you always do, but you still won't have any torches so you'll die again soon.

Sweet Home. Never played it, looks like fun, but I'll probably use translation-patched version to actually play it. I'm personally not a fan of repro's which is why I went with the original release.

Played some Donkey Kong 3 last night. Made it to round 17 and scored 228k points. Have never dug into this one before. Really quirky but cool.
I love DK3. Great mix of Donkey Kong and Galaga. Stanley is the man! Seriously, I fire up DK3 from time to time.

On a completely unrelated note (but while I'm in this thread), I was wondering if anyone knew if you can play PAL games on the NA NES machines. Looking into getting the New Ghostbusters 2 game by HAL.

Definitely Galaga inspired. Once you settle in on that mindset, the game is great. Simple but typical Nintendo polish. It's just not a very deep game. With there was more music, too. I assume the arcade version had a bit more.

Just disable the 10NES chip. It's dead simple. Just did it myself a few weeks ago to play my very first PAL imported game.

Y'all just made me buy DK3 lol I don't know why I don't own it to begin with anyway

Also anyone who doesn't have Darkwing Duck, it's slowly been creeping up in value. It's probably time to buy now or miss out.

Thanks, I did get the point with the torches, I just took a random pic of a death i had to show off my initial experience with the game. Anyways, i continued to play and just

A pretty fun and not too hard puzzle-game. I had to use a guide at times, but the solution was always something stupid, like having to do a certain action (that i had already tried) at a specific place (which is contrary to the Lucasarts-logic i am used to), or pressing a specific part of the screen to progress (like not on the waterfall, but slightly below it), or having to backtrack through most of the game near the end for the first and only time for one key item. Anyways, most of the proper puzzles were quite easy and fun to figure out, and the game was very forgiving with deaths and so on. I think there are only one way to get legitimately screwed in the game, which is the torch-issue that you brought up (i actually had to start over once for this). All in all an interesting game well worth checking out for fans of the genre, looking forward to Deja Vu and Univited!

Popeye is great if a bit limited. Solid port of the arcade though and thankfully a fair bit easier. Amazing sprites in that game

You didn't get boxes by any chance did you? I need better condition boxes for my pulse line games ;)

Unfortunately not. I have kinda given up on complete set, so these days I just buy the cart. While I do prefer to have them boxed, I also think the aesthetic of a shelf of just carts is nice enough that it is passable to have them without.

Uninvited is my favourite of the MacVentures. I just love the horror aesthetic, and the game is just as crazy as Shadowgate, but with more gruesome deaths.

Happy Thanksgiving to all you USAmericans. I'm always thankful for the resources and conversation this thread provides. Thankful to be an NES owner and glad I lived through it all back in the day!!

This sounds interesting, I just realized I dont own it so will have to rectify that. I do own Deja Vu though, on a cart with its sequel that came out for Gbc, so might have to check that out first.

I am not an USAmerican or even an American, but i think the tradition of thinking about what we should be thankful about to be nice, so thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

I never use warps when I play this game so for me it'll always be a challenge even with so many extra lives due to the tough later stages.

Yup, I have that cart too, great stuff, and great value when it came out! I didn't even know Deja Vu 2 existed until that rerelease. It's a shame Uninvited never got a GBC port, then we would've had all 4 MacVentures on the platform.

Speaking of Adventure Games on the NES, anyone ever play Nightshade? I just learned about it a little while ago, looks right up my alley.

I played like five minutes of it when I got it a few years ago, looked cool, but for some reason i never picked it back up. Maybe something for our club in the future?

Gonna be spending the next 12-odd hours debating whether or not I want to pick up a Famicom Everdrive while it's on sale.

I want one, but it's not the most urgent thing I need to be purchasing at the moment. Arg.

A shame the RetroUSB AVS isn't on sale. :p

Just picked up the following carts all w/ cases for $10 each from a local gadgets store:

TMMT II Arcade game
Blades of steel
Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden II
Castlevania II
Dr. Mario
Dragon Warrior

Those are the first OG Nintendo carts I've owned in at least 20 years, as I dumped my entire set in the early 90's the moment I picked up a SNES( something I'm sure others can attest to and come to regret years later). I saw Batman NES there also and I'm wondering if I should bite on that too? I've never played it, but I've heard its a pretty good game?

Also picked up a xbox one wireless controller and xbox one windows controller w/ cable new for $25 each. Don't have an XB1 yet, but hey for $25 a piece I can retire my 360 controllers used for my gaming PC.

You think so? Once I got down to brass tacks with it, I didn't think it was too bad
It took me months to beat it without dying so yeah it wasn't so easy, not with some annoying enemies, that last stage and the Joker. It's sequel Return of the Joker however was much easier for me.

I could see no death running it being hard, but it's not that hard to tank your way through if you don't care about not dying :)

Return of the Joker is ridiculously easy.

Oh man, the last stage is a tough one for sure. I don't think I've ever actually beat Batman, made it all the way to the end, but couldn't finish.
