Halo Wars: Definitive Edition |OT| The Best Marketing This Game Will Get

Looking forward to playing this, pre-ordered the Ultimate edition a couple of days ago.

Can't say I understand or agree with their stance of sending out access to the Definitive Edition in waves "from" today though - why not just unlock it for all pre-orders at the same time, especially if it's already registered to buyers' Microsoft accounts, which it seems to be (shows up in my Manage content for Halo Wars 2).

If I were to pre-order a game it wouldn't say "you'll get your code at some point after release, we send them a few at a time", so I don't understand what's different here.

You have to understand man, it takes time to send out the codes to all those people who pre ordered the digital ultimate edition, there are dozens and dozens out there.

Mmm. I was planning on pre-ordering because of the fact they were making HW1 available now and it would keep me busy until the new game drops but I don't really want to pre-order to then wait? Just is dissatisfying.

tempting just to finally try and beat that one mission I never could on the hardest mode. Mouse controls would make it easy.

I never doubted that I was just confused by his wording. I was just worried as I've been looking forward to this remaster for quite some time and it wouldn't be quite the same if I couldn't mess about with people online :)

To add to the post above; from the official forums FAQ:

Q: What will I be able to configure for creating and searching games in Halo Wars:
Definitive Edition?

A: When creating or searching games, players will be able to configure the following:

1. Private or Public Game
2. Game Type: Skirmish or Campaign
If Skirmish is chosen as Game Type:
3. Players: 1v1, 2v2, 3v3
4. Map: Specific lists for 1v1, 2v2, 3v3
5. Mode: Standard, Deathmatch, Keep Away, Tug of War, Reinforcement
6. AI Difficulty: Easy, Normal, Heroic, Legendary
If Campaign is chosen as Game Type: (campaign only supports co-op for 2 players, so no team selection size here):
7. Mission: Any, List of each unlocked mission
8. Campaign Difficulty: Any, Easy, Normal, Heroic, Legendary

That's what we know so far.

What in the actual fuck about this waves thing. My nephew is visiting and loved the halo wars 2 beta. I promised him we could play the first halo wars tonight after work. I am giving up my GCU discount just to order this digitally for easy access, but if I won't get it while he is in town what is the point. Microsoft- stop fucking up.

This has to be the oddest way they've done something yet.

So you buy the Deluxe Edition, which includes a stub for HW1, but to grant access to HW1 they're sending out codes, in waves.

Why?

Yeah I'm kinda peeved about the code thing. Seems a very odd way to do it.

On the plus side the game does seem to look pretty nice with the bump in resolution and other touch ups.

Go pick up the original if you promised, it is backwards compatible.

I wouldn't rely on this pre order thing. And they did always state that codes start going out on the 20th.

Taken from the Official game forums:

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is being released as an Early Access game beginning December 20, 2016. While the game is a complete experience, we are considering this initial availability “Early Access”, as there are some tweaks and improvements that will be made to the game as we support Halo Wars: Definitive Edition over the coming months.Being an Early Access title means that we need to acknowledge a handful of issues that we are looking at improving in the near future:

On PC, the first time you run the game, there can be a delay of approximately a minute before the game launches. On subsequent launches, the game will launch normally.

We are looking to improve the multiplayer game flow and messaging in the future. This means you move to the most appropriate screens as you step through the process of starting/joining a multiplayer match.

In multiplayer, you need to click the Search button at the bottom of the screen when searching for a match, click the Ready button when you have joined a match and are ready to start the game, and click the Publish button when creating a new multiplayer match. Clicking these buttons will allow you to proceed with the game.

In some cases, voice chat defaults to “all”, even if you’re on opposing teams. In a 1v1 game situation you may want to mute your microphone to avoid inadvertently giving strategic insights to your opponent. On team games, depending on the platform, you may want to use Party Chat instead. This obviously isn’t ideal and is something the team will address going forward.

If your computer hardware is lower end, please go to the Options menu and turn down the game settings to optimally enjoy the game.

there is multiplayer, but there doesnt seem to be any matchmaking. which is a dealbreaker for me T_T

Christ, so we're gonna have to set up private matches? Total disappointment if true.

EDIT: Wait, there's a FAQ that mentions searching for games..... I'm confused.

Microsoft have been doing this things on waves for quite some time (Gears, Halo).

And while this was announced at E3, the Dec. 20 date and it been on waves wasn't announced until a few weeks ago.

So there's nothing surprising and is also a way to avoid people complaining that "Is Dec. 20 already!! wheres my code M$$$??"

Think I'm going to break down and pre-buy the ultimate edition tonight. I loved Halo Wars 1, but I have so many other games to play right now.

Taken from the Official game forums:

That doesn't really answer it though, yes its in early access, but it's till on odd way to do it when there's already a stub on my system.

The whole buy it, get a code at some point after this date remains an odd thing to do

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Nope not even a little bit.

I'm not sure how you read the wording as a definitive statement of "it WILL be available on the 20th".

You committed to a date that MS was non-committal about. So yeah, it's on you this one.

I believe there is a server or custom game browser. There just isn't any skill based matchmaking system.

Code please!

Its 2016. Its not like they need to press the discs.

I agree with you, believe me. I just didn't know it was treated as an early access entry. I preordered back in June. I want my code just as bad. Im hoping by 10am PT we should get some out.

Because there's no reason for it not to be available today. This isn't GTA 6 we're talking about here, I very much doubt they have millions of pre-orders. Then there's the fact the game is already registered to Microsoft accounts which just makes this system even more nonsensical.

It's bizarre, and the only blame here lies with Microsoft for deciding to handle distribution in this way instead of just doing the thing that makes sense which is to let all pre-orders have access at the same time - on the supposed "early access" launch date, today.
