FCC Republicans vow to gut net neutrality rules “as soon as possible”

Yeah, we have to fight back somehow. We have to make hell for the Republicans and Trump admin for a couple of years. And I mean HELL.

This was horrifying for a bit until I came with a thought.

I hope the trump administration does this and it get expensive and insane fast. I hope, cause messing with internet for the millennials is like messing with SS for the baby boomer generation...maybe for once y'all noobs might ACTUALLY VOTE

SS? Short Stop? Hitler's Schutzstaffel? Susan Sarandon? Super Saiyan? Dont you just love when gaffers throw random, out of context, and generic acronyms like SS and expect everyone to know what they meant?

You can think about if for two seconds and it makes sense laugh out loud

Do people really think that ISPs are going to mass throttle everybody for like, every website? Like, all of them?

I'm pretty sure they're aware of the massive backlash that would occur should that happen.

What the FCC will do is that they're going to introduce new rules, then open them up for public comment, just like how this happened before. Then John Oliver or some other celebrity lets people know, then people mass-send comments to them.

Net Neutrality is massively popular. If they think that they can just outright ignore the cries of millions against it and have there be no negative consequences against them, they're in for a rude awakening.

I mean, in context, what can be an acronym that is important with Baby boomers? Social Security. Critical thinking.

I think we should be careful with these over the top pronouncements about flagrant violations of net nuetrality. When they make more subtle changes a large number of people will go "oh that's all?" We'll be the frog sitting in the water that slowly heats up instead of the frog jumping into the boiling water.

I wholeheartedly agree, we won't feel the effect of this in one swift motion but rather a gradual dismantling that mask the effect of this until we're too entangled by all the regulations & red tape that it'll be real challenging to get us unstuck.

The GOP isn't here to actually govern. They're here to destabilize the system and create more animosity between the populace and the government so that they can continue to parrot their "the government doesn't work and we need to slash it to ribbons!" BS and get into power so that they can, surprise surprise, make it easier for big business to scam you out of your already-low wages and line their pockets.

The new Kleptocracy coming to power is their chance and you better believe they will take it. Trump and his ilk will plunder the government and its people until they are either removed from office, or there is nothing left to take.

But these are the Republicans.

They can find one man in a corner and say his views alone represent the masses.

Look at how they've weaponized Obamacare, failing to realize it was their failures to support public options and dealing with chargemasters that likely helped play a role in fueling costs.

These snakes and the turtle in office will find a way to do it again.

People can't go to a competitor when companies are the only broadband provider in town.

Why do republicans want this actually.

Because they believe that government exists to benefit corporations. According to them the government needs to stop regulating everything.

If this weren't catastrophically bad it would almost be funny, these are the same people who bitch about their internet bill being so high because there is zero competition between ISPs but now their politicians are making it easy for the ISPs to put in to place all sorts of new schemes that'll cost consumers even more and let ISPs do whatever they want.

If it's a federal ruling states have to adhere to it. They can try and fight it but I can't think of many states that feel like that is a legal battle worth fighting.

They can fight it with municipal internet but they are in for legal battles with the isp's in the area and with the republicans holding all agencies. Yeah, get used to caps.

See what people can't grasp yet is that its not just that Trump won, its that the gop won BIG and its in charge of it all now.

Porn is still free right?!

Right?

It's free if you pay your ISP a nominal fee to stream video. HD will cost you extra, tho you might not actually get it with drops in internet speed and data caps. But hey, they'll always give you more data for the low low cost of $10/GB.

I meant social security lol

So historically politicians never messed with social security because the baby boomer generations would come out and vote in numbers against anything to change it

For paying 50 CAD, my internet speed is consistently 5mbps - 10mbps.
How is net neutrality going to help me? Will it make downloads from the App store jump to 100 mpbs?

There was an interesting bit on NPR yesterday about municipal governments in cities controlled by Dems vs GOP-controlled state governments. I'd imagine this exact nightmare scenario would hit the same problems.

These snakes and the turtle in office will find a way to do it again.

Then companies like Google, Twitter, the EFF and every other advocate in Silicon Valley will just have to hammer it in even harder to them along with the public.

Sooner or later these guys are going to realize they're making a big mistake screwing around with public interests. I still remember when the entire gaming community flogged Microsoft at the initial Xbone reveal.

They'll cave in eventually.

Fuck republicans and fuck all the "liberals" that took a holier than thou attitude of all fucking elections.

fucked this country for decades to come.

Of all fucking elections people had to take a stand, they chose fucking this one.

Idiots.

So if I don't have service through one of the major telecoms, is there anything about this that will hurt me?

someone will force those business out of the market and then welcome you into the fold. with their cloven hooves and pitchforks.

Physical media is looking awfully appealing going forward.

Good thing I just picked up reading and guitar as a hobby.

Also this.

Also fuck. On second thought I can see people like my Mom saying that this a good, family oriented decision because "the kids don't go outside anymore." Mental gymnastics...

The whole attack from every angle is going to work wonders for the shit mountain administration, those opposing won't no where to begin and so much will slip through the cracks.
This is so frustrating and exhausting. Fuck everything
That's what this administration wants, to frustrate and exhaust.

If you think what happens now is ridiculous, just wait what they'll come up with in the next 4 years to ensure they got 4 more years with Trump, and yet another 4 years after that.

"Congress moves to remove Presidential Term Limits"

The question then becomes, how quickly will we see change in ISP policy once net neutrality gets neutered?

But #bothpartiesthesame #lockherup #votedthirdparty #votedbernie #didntvote looked so great on my social media feeds next to my facebook memes and cat gifs I got so many likes and thumbs ups even got some hearts!

All facebook, google, and twitter need to do is shut off for a week. Have a sign saying "due to republicans wanting to gut net neutrality, we're showing you what will happen once they do."

I mean they wont. But that would be damned effective.

They've done it before, but this will probably have to be at a larger scale and more often this time around.

Luckily, Twitter blacking out for a couple days would probably be enough to have Trump put the kibosh on it.

I forgot about municipal internet. Maybe losing net neutrality will help fuel the popularity of the idea, especially if telecoms get bold in their fleecing of consumers.

I don't know, man.

America has long stood as the country that fights against reason at every turn.

We could talk about curing all illnesses to ever exist in the universe and this country would still find a way to Americanize it into its own unique form of cancer.

I would imagine rather quickly since they have such a hard on to get rid of it, and the GOP are going to want their checks.

Your connection speed stays 5-10mbps. But if you want to view Netflix HD you'll have to pay your ISP extra (essentially your connection speed when connecting to Netflix is throttled to 1mbps or worse, unless you pay up). This is on top of the Netflix subscription fee. Net Neutrality is currently keeping that from happening.

At least, that's how I understand it. It probably won't immediately affect you given you're Canadian, but if Netflix gets hit hard by this then they could go out of business if they can't adapt or fight this change.
