Absolutely disgusting. And judging by his apparent history, it is very unlikely that he will be repentant about this. The best that can happen is this crime sticking with him wherever he goes, causing potential employees to look into the case and find it listed online in full details. Will that bring justice? Of course not.

Cases like these need to be taken seriously to the fullest possible extent or else these deplorable actions will spread, perhaps even outside the locker room. This is a case in particular where Howard needs to be made an example of, or else the court is condoning both a hate crime and a rape.

"Well sure, he shoved a coat hanger up a kids ass, but we don't want to label him a sex offender, it might inconvenience him in the future. After all he's white, so his future is looking bright!"

Forgetting all the other stuff, how is repeatedly bullying and attacking a mentally disabled person not a higher felony than just "injury to a child".

You have to convince me of that. What with brain damage and 'team work' meaning that they band together and hurt people and get away with it, I'm not seeing the pluses.

Kids learn alot about themselves with competitive sports, like working as a team to accomplish a goal or putting in the work needed to get the position you want. It also helps keep kids out of trouble and more active, so healthier. I Coach youth sports year round and I can tell you that the vast majority of these young athletes absolutely need that in their life to help stabilize home life. I imagine you would have a hard time finding any reputable article that says otherwise.

I'm thinking about this now but is ongoing court appointed counseling and such just never on the table for these sorts of things? Like the problem here isn't how to punish the guy, prison is not going to help him, not going to help the victim and going to waste tax payer money. I get that, and I get that sex offender lists are rather draconian.

It's more about why the hell he thinks that this poor kid deserved to be humiliated and viciously assaulted, it could be sexually motivated or not, it could be racially motivated or not, but that doesn't affect the outcome, only how you go about trying to untangle what's going through his head. So we can throw him in jail forever and hope he gets coat hangers shoved up his ass as delicious revenge, we can go with what they did and have him to community service but exactly where does fixing the mental problem come in? An anti-bullying class? Like he needs an assigned psychiatrist he visits regularly until some indeterminate time in the future.

Are we in the 1800s? Surely the fact it was blatant assault would override the "it was only a [insert epithet here]" thought process.
Jim Crow just evolved. Never really went away. Have you seen studies and stats on white vs minority incarceration or attitudes towards drugs based on race, etc? It's not a pretty picture in the US.

The civil suit accuses Howard of humping and taunting the victim during football practices, forcing him to learn a Ku Klux Klan song while displaying a Confederate flag, knocking him unconscious during football camp as coaches and players cheered in a circle, and calling him racially charged names like “Kool-Aid, chicken-eater, watermelon and nigger”

Now bear with me, I'm not a legal expert, but I think this sounds a bit racially motivated. Just my ignorant layman view. Guess that's why I'm not a judge.

It cant be racist. The guy saying it is a white football player with a bright future. Of course this is not a hate crime. Now, if he was black and the victim was white and he used anti-white racial terms, then it would be racist.

I think I am explaining this correctly. People who voted over economic anxiety, please correct me if I am wrong.

Maybe someone with better knowledge can explain that, but I was thinking that given the nature of a criminal case, the burden of proof is probably higher. There may not be any witnesses to a lot of this stuff, or at least none willing to come forward.

It would probably help in the civil suit though... I think?

Not being a sex crime makes sense, but hate crime? I don't buy that for a second. Regardless, how do you not get jail time for what is clearly assault?

How does it not being labelled a sex crime make sense?

He shoved a hanger into his rectum. That shit didn't just magically find its way there and he sure as shit had sexual thoughts prior to just doing it.

Okay, so what do we to combat the cult-like worship high school sports teams get, especially in small towns? I get that it can help keep kids in shape and teach about teamwork, but again, that 'teamwork' seems to lead straight to an 'us vs them' road in a lot of places. I grew up in one, and the football team literally got away with whatever they wanted to. The town cop even said if they won state he'd take the night off...and he did.

Disgusting. I'm also about 100% certain that they would have locked him up and thrown away the key if he was black and the victim was white. I'd actually bet major parts of my anatomy.

If this happened to my son, and the courts laid down this powder puff decision, justice would still be served. As we have seen time and time again in this country, there is no winning when you allow the systems in place to operate as they seemingly always do.

America, we have a lot of sicknesses, but one of the most bizarre is our adulation of High School Football players. Literally protected by the courts, because of how important that High School football team is.

Like, if you ever wonder how an entire region can develop a cult mentality like Penn State, you can see it germinate in High School, and even middle school football organizations.

It's MADNESS.

This is a scandal from a local school. And I'm assured by folks in the know, that this is PEANUTS compared to stuff that goes on in Texas, and lots of other places - but apparently Texas is especially bonkers on this front:

For every bad headline about that there is 100 other awesome stories from sports that never get told. Like all the charity work they do. And just to clarify your post I originally quoted said ban all competitive sports not just football. So like track and field or swimming, possibly bowling?

If they claim it wasn't sexually motivated, take off all the people who got put on the sex offender list for pissing in public.

I am just saying, more needs to be done to combat it. I imagine in nearly every small town shady shit happens regarding the local sports heroes. It's how small town life works, sadly.

I'm not trying to attack you or your kids, I am sure you do a great job. Because you like care more than just about the game. But the culture in small towns is seriously messed up.

Violent competitive sports I guess, though I could see some shady shit happening with swimming, most small towns don't have a swim team for the simple fact that they don't have pools.

And when I talk about small towns, I am talking about places with a population of less than two thousand.

It's insane how subjective those rulings are but yeah... I feel like once b-hole penetration enters into the mix, things have gone well into "sex offender" territory. That's not a place you tend to go in the heat of a straight-up desperate fight....

Different rules for different people. Trump supporters agree with Idaho. But they are bitches and cowards so nothing is about race if you ask them.

America is fine with white males commiting hate and sex crimes. Been this way forever.

Fixed that for you. That Brock shitbird is from California.
In spite of what Trump voters think, you can get away with a lot of shit if you're a white male in the US.

You are correct. Idaho is a fucked up place where white supremacy is fully on display, but most Americans are cool with it.

Oh, they already know that. They just won't admit it to the public at large. The idea of ignorance of privilege is laughable. That's just an act they put on so that they don't have to acknowledge it.

How about that face, folks?

That asshole, douchebag face that you just want to stomp a mud hole in.

Wow, that's messed up. It should both be a sex crime and racially motivated. Highschool football worship is something I'll never understand. I suppose we have hockey up here, but it doesn't seem to be the same (or at least I don't hear about it).

Trump supporters agree with Idaho.

I didn't read anything about trump in this news article. I'm confused where that came from.

I think the poster was just making the connection that Idaho voters that were ok with voting in a racist person bragging about sexual assault are probably also ok with this situation here.

Don't forget this one: "boys will be boys"

What's with the homoerotic implications of hazing practices as well? I've always found that baffling. Mostly because the cultures that promote hazing tend to be intensely homophobic.

Typically the act is emasculating to the victim. It's an alpha dog thing. That said, I though South Park nailed it in Cartman Sucks.

Yes we can both agree more needs to be done, like ALOT more, that is obvious with how many athletes get away with pretty much anything they want. But the only sure fix is to raise our kids to not want to do this, but that's a whole nother can of worms that requires parents to be accountable lol. As far as small town I grew up in a place called Enumclaw, had like 10k people I think. Don't remember football players specifically getting away with things since we pretty much all had the run of the town it seemed.
