Minecraft becomes the first Sony published million seller in Japan since 2004

Their software output, hardware and marketing decisions, and the very fact that Sony Interactive Entertainment is an American company headquartered in San Mateo have already made that shift evident.

When did a Major League Baseball game sell a million in Japan?

That person didn't clarify that they were only talking about sales in Japan. I read it as a general statement. My mistake if I misunderstood.

Gran Turismo, God Of War, MLB The Show and Uncharted(RIP), inFAMOUS, Killzone. They have plenty of IPs that sell a million. Not exactly a high threshold.

In Japan. None of the franchises you mentioned ever sold a million except Gran Turismo waaaaaaaay back in the day.

I honestly think Microsoft only releases the Xbox in Japan because that's the only way Japanese 3rd party devs will release games for them, outside of paid exclusives/collaborations

FFXV must be, right? Including digital. Next year DQXI. Can't think of anything else. GT is probably dead too.

DQXI is also on the 3DS and Switch. Out of the 3 versions the 3DS is likely to be the bigger seller. Maybe Switch is Nintendo manages to attach DQXI in some way to it before it releases. Don't think that's going to be a win for Sony as far as that game goes in Japan.

Possibly. It's also the reason that Japan won't be irrelevant for Sony any time soon. They get a lot of support from Japan(And with that some nice licensing fees) and can't afford to give that up any time soon. Of course they are to struggle with that going forward as Vita fades and the PS4 fails to pick up the slack.

Haha, that's bonkers.

I wonder where Minecraft is in ten year's from now? Still just selling Minecraft to the young gamers coming through and no numbered sequels? It probably will. Minecraft is a beast.

This is encouraging news. I'd be very interested in some sales numbers for vita games. Does this make it the best selling Vita game?

Vita's top 10 in Japan:

PSV Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition - 36.593 / 1.226.065 SCE 3/19/2015
PSV God Eater 2 [All Versions] - 258.826 / 427.863 Bandai Namco 11/14/2013
PSV God Eater 2: Rage Burst - 221.076 / 366.628 Bandai Namco 2/19/2015

More than anything I think this proves how irrelevant Japan is to Sony.

And nearly everyone else. There needs to be a book written on how Japan went from being the center of the gaming universe to what it is today. Without the Nintendo games there probably wouldn't even be a games market left (outside of mobile).

Calling the second largest PS4 market "irrelevant" is absurd.

The NA/EU markets are their top two. I'm not sure where Japan is but they're nowhere near their second largest market.

That may sound confusing, but despites the PS4 selling better than the Wii U, it's still haven't got a single million seller on the console, while the Wii U already had several.

most of WiiU million sellers have been bundled, this certainly helped their sales

Vita's top 10 in Japan:

I appreciate that being on the list doesn't go hand in hand with being a sensation or anything, but it's still nice to see Freedom Wars on there. Still kind of hoping the japanese (relative) popularity compels Sony to a sequel at some point, PS4 or otherwise.

That's not how it works. Saying Japan is irrelevant is like saying the UK or Germany is irrelevant.

Japan isn't irrevelant, we as a forum just make too much of a deal of it. We don't make a big deal of other medium size countries.

Also unlike other medium size markets it's super specialized.

Even though Germany, France and U.K are individually the size of Japan each country have similar taste and can marketed similarly. So with the same effort as Japan you get not only 3 countries individually japan size but also other countries like Spain and Italy. The return on effort is just so low for Japan.

If there's ever a Freedom Wars sequel, it'll probably be on mobile. PS4 has been toxic to hunting games and Sony isn't in the dedicated handheld space anymore.

Its up there with UK and Germany: one of the most important countries for Playstation.
Only for hardware. Not software.
Uk and germany both have a higher tie ratio and better first party sales. And i dont have numbers for that, but im sure the ps+ attachrate is also way higher.

And with selling hardware you dont make money in the console business

And it's also about the outlook and future of the market. And in that case you can call japan "irrelevant" even though its a little hyperbole

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
Still a drop in the pie compared to the us and U.K. For Sony.
Having great sales in Japan just doesn't matter like it use too.

And if sony belived that, we'd have a worse gaming industry than we have. So i'm glad they arent taking your advice
