looking at the games that were SUPPOSED to come out they had a pretty diverse portfolio, and they first revealed the game what, two years ago? It was scheduled for this fall.
Scalebound was officially unveiled E3 2014.

I don't believe ANYTHING kotaku writes/says, but I have to say I'm curious about this.
That seems rather stupid given the excellent track record that Jason Schreier has.

MS has been downright hazardous to the health of some great studios.

"Great studios", i.e. studios that have had a mediocre/bad track record in recent years but in the past have produced great games.

It's business. If you don't perform, you don't survive. It sucks, but the Xbox division isn't doing great as is so it can't pump money into long-term projects in the hope that they recover like Sony does/can.

The Platinum love is strong here, but unless we get some behind the scenes info confirming as such, I'm willing to bet Microsoft isn't to blame on this one - the game has yet to have made a case for itself, everything we've seen has been very underwhelming.

What have we seen though? We never saw the combat gameplay against regular enemies for any extended period of time. We've seen the unveiling, and an E3 demo where four people hit a giant boss that didn't react to them.

If PG dies, my heart could not take it.

Yeah. The kings of action games. The industry needs them. Such a shame sales of their games - no matter how good - never really took off.

I'm sure the main reason this came out was because budget wise it wasn't gonna be super expensive to develop to completion. Most studios wouldn't let a project sit on the backburner not making any progress whatsoever. How did TLG sell btw?

I think we all know it's not going to set the charts on fire, but that's precisely the point: We got it anyway.

Well Kamiya was not involved at all in Vanquish so they should not have been surprised

Yeah, Vanquish was Mikami, right?

Looking at the footage I don't even blame Microsoft.

Imagine it from their perspective. They probably thought they were getting Vanquish, and ended up with

You think they signed a contract not knowing what game they'd get? Like a loot crate??

Of course they knew what the game was like, if they wanted Vanquish 2, they'd have signed for Vanquish 2.

This is such a rough break for Microsoft. This is the type of stuff where the developer holds a grudge and refuses to release a title for your platform until the end of time, like Level 5 did after True Fantasy Online - a decision made easier since Japanese centric titles tend to not sell overly well on Xbox.

I love Kamiya but the game didn't seem that interesting and the main character was really unappealing to me. There didn't seem to be a ton of interest around the game either.

True, it's the least exciting Platinum game in a while (MS knew what they were signing for). Would have killed for a Bayonetta on Xbox. Not buying a Nintendo console for one game.

I always thought the game looked rough when it demoed but it'd be a shame if it got canned. MS banking on Halo Wars to carry them to the promised land I guess.

Can't wait for Kamiya to be the baby in Death Stranding

I imagine this will be an issue for Platinum.

1.) They have over 200 staff, presumably at least half of which were making Scalebound.
2.) Nier Automata is about to go gold, and Yoko Taro makes it sound like it's not going into sequel mode right away.
3.) Activision killed off their licensed game division, so that's not an option anymore.
4.) They have the Gran Blue Fantasy project and Lost Order, but I'm assuming that was going to take on Nier's staff given Kamiya wasn't attached to it.

Now they need to get a project from someone on a short turnaround for a ton of staff in an era where that kind of thing is pretty hard to do, and they were struggling to get contracts even when that was less true.

Nintendo, don't fail me now.

I will be absolutely furious if this is true! This has been my most anticipated game since they first showed the CG trailer at E3. Wtf is going on... There's been way too many cancellations. Fable Legends/Lionhead closing, Project Knoxville/Press Play closing, Obsidian's RPG (MS has to regret this as Pillars of Eternity turned out to be a smash hit), Phantom Dust getting "different devs" (if it's not at this year's E3, I'm counting it as dead)... Come on MS, you gotta get this under control! :/

I think the Cloud Power vision can giving them a lot of trouble in development... I wish they focus only in make the game without that online cloud power.

The game looks good.

The only reason I think they keep going with Crackdown is because they sold the Halo 3 beta with the original. Crackdown 2 was unnecessary. But I REALLY like what I've seen from Crackdown 3, the little they've shown.

C'mon Smash is filled with dead characters.

Megaman is loved by people and I don't see Nintendo funding a megaman game.

While this is true, given the current working relationship it would be easier to create a Bayonetta 3 than it would be to start talks to do any sort of Megaman project on Nintendo's dime, for example. That's also the reason it's more likely than Metroid: there's already a dedicated working studio that knows exactly what to do.

Oh no... I was really hoping for the best with this project. Definitely had my attention. Not good for MS if this is true.

Why would Nintendo want a game that's so troubled that it may be cancelled?

Microsoft seems to have poor understanding of what makes a game good- they just throw money at numerous projects and see what sticks. If it works, great, make more of that. If it doesn't, I guess these teenagers who buy games just aren't into that for whatever reason, we'll try something else. Nintendo and Sony do at least 'get it', and have a clear vision of the types of games they want to make and be associated with. They're much better at identifying and exploiting potential, wheras MS basically just mimics precedent. But MS came to the industry very late, and I'd expect them to be less clued-up than the competition.

If Scalebound is in trouble, then it's probably because Kamiya is taking forever and lots of money to craft an open world game, of which he, PG, and Japan generally have little experience in doing, but also I'd wager because MS simply doesn't know what it has on its hands, or the value of the pedigree behind it, and sadly see it simply as a lost cause rather than an opportunity to be salvaged.

I personally thought scalebound looked good.

Same. I didn't like Drew (although I did like old Drew) and I expected something a bit flashier perhaps, but I was interested in the concept, have unwavering faith in Kamiya, and some of the more recent press previews suggested a new fathom of depth unsuccessfully conveyed in public videos to date. I'm confident Scalebound 'was' -and still could be- a great game.

It outsold the last two Ueda games combined.

Wish I could say I care but Scalebound looked awful. Looked like a game that would have made sense 10-15 years ago but not 2017.

This move does look bad for Microsoft though. Their lack of meaningful first party games over the years has been a constant criticism and the future doesn't look good.

Oh for fuck sake. If Microsoft have some brains they won't do this, because outrage will be huge. Lionhead and some free2play garbage is one thing, but canceling Kamiya's dream game is brand suicide.
Outside of people like you and me who follow this kind of stuff, no one will care. This game was never going to be a big seller.

Lol, Kamiya some sort of God is he? Missing milestones, troubled development and taking on more than he can chew to the point where MS deemed them unable to deliver? Can't wait to see this parroted as a meme in other threads.
