This is a huge win for me TBH
(Since I've never bought a MS console, never will)
Platimun will probably never, ever make any exclusives with M.S ever again.

So any if not all Platinum games will go to Sony.
It's a great win for me and Sony.

* Finger's crossed PS4 get this exclusive -just change the name.

Lol, you know, it's up to Sony to contract PG to make games. This game never prevented that from happening. And it being cancelled wont make it happen.

I'm legit hurting man.

I was so excited for this game. Gave me Panzer Dragoon vibes throughout. I know money can't solve everything but I really hope, if there is a way to lift through this issue, it'll be done.

like a hundred people are out of work and it took a toll on kamiya's mental health and the only thing you can think of is console war bullshit. i have no possible reason to believe you are an adult

Ah, man. That is such a dissapointment. One of the games I have been looking forward to. Looked so good. Hope it isn't true, but knowing Kotaku it probably is...

You know, this is two Kamiya games now that have ended up cancelled (albiet B2 was revived). Can't imagine how frustrated he must feel, but if PG has indeed been missing milestones they must've seen this coming. Maybe it was too much of a project for them, or UE4 wasn't cutting it for an open world title on the Xbone.

due to the way I have no room for a PC(just sold mine, the desk and everything with it), the Scorpio was actually a console I wanted because it would have a baller ass JRPG and the best looking 3rd party games. Unreal......this changes the outlook so damn much on buying the Scorpio.

I always got the sense Kamiya wasn't very happy with the MS relationship. I guess he's freed up for something new though, I look forward to it.

I mean, I would like the game to live on as much as anyone else in terms of it still coming out, but I think you're missing the point here.

Sure, the game being re-done for PS4 would be cool for everyone who has a PS4 and for gaming in general, however you're still kind of ignoring the fact that Xbox One gamers lose another game and this game alone was taking a toll on multiple people mentally. I mean, to the point where they even were forced to take a month off from the game and delayed the development even more.

On top of that, this leaves Platinum hoping that NieR at least makes a good profit to keep them afloat, I was looking forward to this game as much as anyone else whether I thought it looked bad or not, I was still gonna get it. It sucks that it got to people to the point that payments stopped, milestones were missed, time was taken from development and now the gaming community loses another game. It's not about whether Sony or Microsoft has more exclusives in this discussion really, it's the fact that we as a whole, just lot another game that could of potentially received love from gamers.

Why would they cancel this game so far along? I'd be so upset if I worked on the game and just see all my work get thrown in the trash.

At this point I would be happy if Microsoft just bought up some exclusives. Gears, Halo and Forza are great... but damn. Where is the new life?

Why just so you can add them to a list? If they can't produce their own games successfully buying up other games that would be multi-platform otherwise is not cure. That really worked out well for Tomb Raider...

Yuck. If this isn't a troll post, then you need to open up your gaming horizons.

I didn't expect it to be cancelled, but I'm honestly not surprised that it could happen. Game looked embarrassingly bad every time it was shown. Nothing about it looked right.

Any chance of any publisher picking this up? Or is the IP owned by Microsoft?

MS contracted Plat to make them game for them, so I imagine they not only own the IP, but any of the work done with their funding. I guess they could sell the IP and whatever the game is at the current state if another publisher wants to foot the bill (isn't that what happened with the original Psychonauts?), but that seems messy. Big corporations seem content to just sit on IPs rather than sell them when their value is impossibly low.

Why is this a common thing with first party games from Sony&MS? I can not remember a Nintendo game that had been announced and did not release (even if some games postponed sometimes like BotW).

It looks weird as if Sony&MS like to announce many bombastic games to get people interested in the first years of a new console and never really intended to release these games.
Do you ever see much high budget experimental AAA brand new IP's from Nintendo as much as MS/Sony? No.

Very few and and nothing risky and playing it safe with doing it based on current characters etc and nowhere near as high budget

It does own the IP, including the assets?
well, that kinda sucks :(
I was hoping we would see a FF13 versus to XV scenario.

Platinum are devs for hire, most of their work is not owned by them.
Publishers are willing to finance them, with MS jumping out it could mean that they are less likely to get funding from someone else for future projects. There's only a few publishers out there that are willing to fund a Platinum game and MS was one of them, now there's one less, i hope you still feel great about your huge win.

Future releases?

100+ employees are out of work, and nobody is going to put 100+ people on an action game. Even if they got an investor that felt like setting a shitload of money on fire, do you think it would be a good idea for platinum to again put 100+ people at the mercy of a publisher?

They need to, and most likely will, get the absolute fuck out of AAA development. That's what happened to Obsidian.

Yeah this is really bad news for a studio like Platinum. It's entirely possible that 50% of their entire staff was on Scalebound and now are just sitting with a 100+ people without a project.

They need to land a major contract ASAP or I expect some substantial layoffs. The bad news for them is that a cancelation of a project of this scope that was this far along in development will be a huge black eye in landing major contract work

BOTW is the most comparably ambitious game that Nintendo has announced this gen compared to their other titles.

It never looked great to me, but I think all of us were hoping that the radio silence was them overhauling the game and polishing it up before they showed it again, hopefully at E3 this year. There was also some speculation that the added horsepower of Scorpio would really smooth over the rough parts like framerate.

I do feel like that last video I saw of it didn't feel like it had a specific hook to show off. Unfortunate that it's Kamiya's game having trouble but I could believe that's the case for this game.

Yeah, the showings for the game seemed like we were waiting for the big hook to be announced later and it just sort of... never materialized.

I don't think there's a Kamiya game I haven't enjoyed at least somewhat so it's a little disappointing to hear.

It's almost guaranteed that MS owns the IP, though I can imagine that it's possible that a Sleeping Dogs situation could happen and an interested party could get the code and pay Platinum to finish it off, minus anything that MS could have trademarked.

That being said, it's much too early to start talking options.

Microsoft calling the shots and we don't know how reasonable/unreasonable they were. Staff were forced to take time off due to the workload, the blame is on both most likely.
As I recall, they had pretty unreasonable demands on Phantom Dust as well which caused the Devs to get shuttered.

Definitely looking forward to any post-mortems in the future.

Simultaneously shocking and not shocking at all.

I've always gotten the impression that Kamiya might secretly hate this game. Microsoft doesn't seem like the type of company that he'd get along with.

The game looked promising but it looked heavily designed by a focus group and it screamed "pls have fun" to me.

I wanted to be proven wrong D:

I'm not saying the Xbox lineup isn't shit, I don't have one for a reason. I'm saying you can't put the blame on Scalebound for Spencer considering it seems it was largely Platinum's fault it was in development hell and Spencer wasn't even the President when it was revealed.

Why not? Phil is head of xbox, and has expierence in game development, he's in the similar position Yoshida was, and Yoshida got a lot of shit for games that got canned or delayed.

The game must have been in pretty rough shape for this to be true. For them to cancel a game this late into development means they believe the project is fundamentally flawed at not just a technical level, but a gameplay level as well - and no amount of extra money or allotted time injected to the project will change that fact. Platinum has never been in that position before, so it's hard to believe. All of their other projects look pretty fucking polished and enjoyable, so did Kamiya bite off more than they could chew and give Microsoft their leftover development hours or something Lol?

I just wonder how much of a "game" even existed when they actually revealed Scalebound 3 years ago. I know it was a CG Trailer. I assume it was very early (and obviously revealed way too soon) if after 3 years of additional development it ends up getting cancelled (if this is true).

chill out with that garbage

Wanna discuss? Better rewatch that 2013 E3 Xbox conference and how MS straight up lied to everyone's face about how many billions they've spent on new games and how many new IP's will launch in one year. Xbox brand died in 2010 for me (360 owner) and this whole threat reminds me why I went back to Sony.

This is also the type of failure that is going to make other publishers less eager to work with Platinum. Hopefully Nier is a huge success.

If true, this is really sad news for Xbox One owners.
Scalebound and Quantum Break were the reasons I got one last year. Now I feel kind of burned.

Looked like trash probably dodged a bullet

They spent dozens of millions on it, they hardly dodged anything.

There's nothing legal preventing me from doing so, but I shouldn't yet. Maybe a year from now :p
Also, before this gets blown out of proportion, it's extremely minor compared to the cancellation of a huge project.

Let's just hope for the best for Platinum, clearly not easy being an independent developer of large-scale games in Japan (or anywhere really).

Please don't tease if you can't talk about it. That's bad manners.
