How fucking hilarious would it be if Nintendo picked up the funding for Scalebound and made it Switch exclusive? Lol. Meltdowns galore.

I was never blown away by what they've shown, but I wanted to see what they were able to pull off.

Scalebound was clearly a different game from what Platinum usually makes. I thought it would be like Monster Hunter in which it doesn't demo well, but it's very fun. I personally had faith in Kamiya and Platinum. Now we'll never know.

Why?
Their track record speaks for itself in most other work for hire scenarios.
They get it done on time, on spec and on budget.
They're a reliable studio to come in and get something to release.

Whatever break down they have had with MS is entirely speculative, but they still have, you know, every other game they've managed to get out on time with other publishers as their track record.

This was a high level failure in which the studio tried to step out of their usual genre trappings. Why would another publisher be interested in investing large amounts for another project of either a similar scale or different genre than what Platinum normally does? This was a chance for Platinum to expand past the character action games they're attributed to.

Saddening news if this is true.

Oh no... Please be OK Kamiya.
Like I said, Kamiya his putting all his soul in his projects, I'm really sad for him personally.

What if Kamiya eventually works with Taro Yoko on a new Drakengard as a substitute?

I would be fine with this :)

This is a huge win for me TBH
(Since I've never bought a MS console, never will)
Platimun will probably never, ever make any exclusives with M.S ever again.

So any if not all Platinum games will go to Sony.
It's a great win for me and Sony.

* Finger's crossed PS4 get this exclusive -just change the name.

This sucks. While it looked bad last showing, it was still a big budget Kamiya game so I had high hopes for it.

Man, what does MS even have this year? Halo and Gears installments already came out and they need to diversify their line up some more. With Scorpio scheduled for this year I'm not sure what they can pull off.

Wow, terrible. This game has had an interesting development. I heard it was shopped around and other publishers said no. I wonder if that's typical.

Nope, not at all. Means the initial funder was looking to recoup costs & still get it out despite its troubles. Speaks more to Xbox division's budget woes. If it just needed some more time & the budget was on point, I imagine they'd have just funded it & got it out in order to save face.

If this is really cancelled, what the hell does Microsoft have for 2017?

They positioned Scalebound to be their big new IP exclusive for 2017. Hell it looked like it was gonna get the majority of their marketing this year.

Now it looks like just Crackdown 3, Forza 7, and (maybe) Cuphead this year.

Unless they pull something out their ass for Fall 2017 at E3 it's gonna be pretty barren in terms of Exclusives for the XB1.

This seems to represent a shift in MS' strategy towards the games software business. They seem to be cutting a lot of the fat and getting lean in terms of how much internal 1st/2nd party software they are producing. We've seen it with Sony too, maybe just not as dramatically, but their output is definitely less than the PS2/3 days. I'm sure dev costs have a lot to do with it, but it just doesn't seem like these big companies want the risks associated with owning and operating/funding as much big 1st party software anymore. The market is changing and people who are so used to 1st party games leading the way are having trouble adapting.

But Sony saw games like The Last Guardian through to its end.

What a selfish and strangely cruel post.

They won't tho. Going to Nintendo isn't going to magically resolve Platinum's internal issues.

This game was suppose to be Platinum's next big venture outside of the Bayonetta formula they've been stuck on for 7 years.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

What's happening is that an entire company's eggs (and by extension, a whole style of game's eggs) were riding in a single basket that was being held by Microsoft.

Everyone on this forum swears it's going to bomb on release, if you ask me cancelling is a smart move from MS. Better to spend their money on something that will capture their audience like a WRPG.

Shame I was quite eager for a special showing at E3. I'm curious to see why it faced so much difficulty.

I never heard these claims of unreasonable demands. Do we know what they supposedly were?
They showed that concept trailer without the team even making it. Shopper around for different teams at the time, wanted an AAA game on like an A game budget all rumors of course I believe someone probably has a link

Having the dream project you've been working on for the past four years thrown in the garbage must be worse than a death in the family if you're as passionate about their job as Kamiya.

Saddening news if this is true.

I feel like this twitter user who is obviously privy to info most don't have should let Kamiya announce something regarding his work/health instead of just putting it out there like that.

Man, that sucks. Been interested in the game since it was revealed. One of the few games that looked interesting enough for me to look into buying a Xbox One like Sunset Overdrive and Rare Replay. Hope for the best for Platinum and Kamiya since there was talk of him taking a break for his mental health. This seeming like an ambitious dream game for Kamiya and his studio, so I can imagine the undertaking of the project was taxing at points and it must be hard on Kamiya for this project to be canceled.

Surely it cannot have helped a couple of years ago when an MS guy said it could be the greatest game of all time

Talk about unneeded pressure

Anyway Mental health is far more important. Hope he gets well

I fucking hope not. Only game I'm interested in on xbox atm. Will make buying a Scorpio a no go for me. Whatever happened to Ken loeb saying it is incredible or what not.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I'm guessing the fault lies in both parties. Microsoft for probably insisting and demanding changes to cater to a western market and platinum for not being able to make those changes in a satisfactory and timely manner.

I'm a big Xbox fan but man Microsoft has gotta stop with the corporate, focus-testing'esque development of their games. I want to buy first party xbox games but nearly everything this generation has been underwhelming, pretty safe, or has been cancelled.

Let the developers make the game they want, and not the game Microsoft wants.

yep. corperate focus tested is the phrase. It doesn't help that Platinum is not as efficient as everyone gives them credit for. They were under tons of pressure and Kamiya was the one that cracked.

Would another publisher be able to pick up the pieces of this? Nintendo did it with Bayonetta 2. Would Microsoft be able to block a direct competitor from using something they were directly involved with?
