Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

This is a pity, I feel for the devs and the gamers who were anticipating this game. While I think it looked a bit safe, I don't think it deserved the ridicule it got on here.

On the other hand, Xbone has a pretty weak upcoming line up.

It's not stupid in theory, it's smart and serves their overall business well.

The problem is not every game is minecraft or animal crossing.

Not very many types of IP really support the "live service" model, other than crafting, tomogotchi type games, and maaaybe you could make a survival type game work but I don't think people will consistently keep their character going in a survival type setting. There's only so much zombie killing you can do.

Mmos as well but not everyone is in to that.

You're essentially cutting out a large part of the gaming audience who are primarily interested in single player narrative driven or just solid single player gameplay if narrative is lacking. If all games become live service time and $ sucks I'm probably out.

If MS isn't happy selling $60 single player games then I'm not happy with MS, and they will realize a lot of people agree.

What's the story with the game out soon Nioh or is it Nier

That by PG isn't it? I'm guessing the lead on Scalebound had no input in this though

Also is that being released on xb1?
Out in two months, dev by Platinum. Nothing to do with Kamiya. No word on XB1 release. It's unlikely.

Neither of those games are releasing on XB1, Nier Automata is on Steam as well iirc but I think Nioh is completely PS4 exclusive.

Arrogant Sony can make a comeback at any point. This industry needs a red hot rod for scathing criticism of shitty practice. Said rod is warmed for ANY developer, publisher or platform holder. Every single one of them keeps going full circle, they never truly learn.

I didn't even think someone could misunderstand how a RT is laid out on Twitter all I read was "better than ur life" and I was struggling to understand how that backed up the rest of his post. My bad.
No worries lol. Some people, myself included when I first started Twitter had no idea how to read RTs and Twitter convos :/
Good luck selling that.
Are you serious? Is this a joke post. Why do you think the game was conceived in the first place! There's a fanbase. Of course it's not going to sell AAA numbers but I'd bet my account and a permaban that this game will have no problem selling.

That's a shame, but I'm not too surprised. It never looked like it was really coming together in the gameplay demos.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Nioh is from Team Ninja and looks to be a great Soulsborne inspired game. Nier Automata is a game made by Square and Platinum and is being lead by the guys behind Metal Gear Rising as well as the original creator of Nier, Yoko Taro.

A damn 70 page thread for Scalebound, in a couple hours. Where was any of this pent up interest during the last 3 years .

Interesting times we live in

Can't say that I'm surprised. The MS vortex of destruction hits again.

I'm mostly sad about Platinum. I hope they don't take too much of a punch from this.

My take on all this, and I've been seeing this for a while, is that Microsoft is transitioning all their games to the 'live service' model.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Basically Microsoft want to have their games emulate what Minecraft has been able to do.
Long lifecycle, large user base, Increased spend.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Microsoft's future direction is about being able to offer the Xbox games and live services on multiple devices that run Windows 10.
Yeah, that matches my own observations.

The writing's been on the wall that this is the direction they wanted to go in.

It makes sense because this is the only way to achieve the kind of revenue and fit in with the philosophy of the parent company to ensure that Xbox exists within MS.

MS doesn't want to be a big fish in a little pond, they want to be a whale in the ocean.

Well shit. I mean, the game didn't look GOOD, and WAY too much of a DmC ripoff, and the E3 showing was pretty shit, but given some work it definitely would have been a strong title and Platinum knows great action games.

I wish another publisher would pick this up somehow.

Supposedly it was according to Y2Kev and nobody wanted it. Which if true is...yeesh.

Cuphead will be ok...r-right?

Fuck, don't say this. I mean, if the worst comes to the worst I think they should be able to hopefully take that to other interested publishers since the game looks so beautiful and unique it has a good chance or certain publishers taking an interest in it. Literally the only reason I still have my Xbox One is this game (and Phantom Dust remastered which I am think might get canned next since Microsoft are sucking so hard this gen).

Negative news usually creates more response than positive. It's the same with most things I suppose

Totally sucks. They better announce some new titles other than the usual this e3.
Even if they do, why wouldn't consumers think "they'll cancel this anyway". Of course they won't cancel everything but this thought will still be there. And MS has to sell Scorpios otherwise I don't see this brand being around much longer in its current shape.

Platinum makes solid games when they're allowed to do what they want. Most of the bad games they're involved in are cases where it's plausible if not blatantly obvious that the blame lies above them.

That's what I was saying. Heck, Kenji Saito and his team made a good, unique game out of a troubled game like MGR in short time, and delivered a mostly solid game in Devastation. I'd say there is a strong case to be made that Eiro Shirahama probably isn't actually a bad director, but that Kenji Saito is just that good to deliver something solid under Activision, and that Activision is just that awful.

Nothing gets the interest going stronger than an unexpected cancellation

In the case of Star Fox Zero you either like the controls or don't. Outside of that the game is solid and performs how it should and runs well save for the beginning part of the one level late in the game and even then that section is 20s long if that. I haven't played the Activision games.

A bad game in development got cancelled is how this looks. Happens all the time. Why is this thread 67 pages? its not anything new in game development that troubled games are cancelled. Even Platinum can misfire, cough Korra cough TMNT cough.

I think we know why it has 67 pages lol

Its the direction the majority of the industry is headed in.

Really Sony 1st party should be commended in terms of still producing major, expensive, single player focused narrative games. They are one of the few players in town still doing it.

It's nier automata and that's being published by square, made by platinum, and on ps4 exclusively. That demo was fucking amazing too so I can't wait for the game.

I'm pretty sure this E3 won't change anything big for you(and me, and everyone)'s vision for Xbox brand.

I don't mean in what games to show (anyone expecting a megaton surprise should be prepared for disappointment. As others often point out MS is not Sony and doesn't like to show games that are 2-3 years away from release).

I mean in what direction the Xbox brand goes from here on out. I've said it before, but Scorpio looks to be one last attempt for dominance on the hardware front. Otherwise, expect a more explicit transition of the Xbox brand from hardware to pure service sector.

Jesus this thread is moving too damn fast to keep up with...

This is all just a fecking mess and a reminder of how little commitment MS has to building out 1st/2nd party IP. I was an Xbox guy last gen and it was definitely one of the things that made me look Sony's way come PS4.

On the plus side of all of this though, maybe it will mean that Platinum now has a bunch of staff free to port Bayonetta 1+2 to Nintendo Switch...

Is it port begging if its already a game on a Nintendo platform but you want to see it on its sequel platform?

You got great things that go together like French Fries and Chicken Wings, Peaches and Cream, Will & Grace, Jak & Daxter, and then there are things like.... Japanese and Xbox. They just don't mix.

This is bullshit. In spite of its lack of popularity in Japan, the Xbox brand was a great home for Japanese games up until the later part of 360's life.

The first Xbox is the unofficial Dreamcast 2; from masterpieces like Ninja Gaiden Black to quintessentially unique Japanese experiences like Breakdown, it's has an excellent library, even before counting superior ports or Sega follow-ups. In this thread, the cult classic Phantom Dust was brought up a few times - because it's a Microsoft exclusive. For the the first half of its life the 360 somehow managed to be the better console for Japanese games by the being the preferred machine for third-parties around the world and continuing to be the home of Japanese action games (sometimes exclusively, and Ninja Gaiden II may as well still be exclusive, as well as Bayonetta until this gen). It even cornered the market on genres like STGs and picked up some slack on JRPGs (although The Last Remnant is so painfully superior on PC you can't count that one). I don't want to engage in a list war, so I won't go any further on that, but to address the current Xbox One situation: despite some early promise (namely, this and Phantom Dust) the situation has been heavily reversed for two reasons: console development becoming even less valued in Japan with a lot of companies falling off the map or shrinking considerably and Microsoft demonstrated failure to expand their first-party.

It was literally the ONLY Japanese Developer they HAD that made an exclusive for them!

Nah. There was also MOSS. Of course they're small-fry in comparison.

Edit:

Thank you for this, lol. I sometimes get tired of all the "there are no Japanese games on Xbox" posts.

My gut tells me that stance is the easy way to identify those who think of JRPGs as the beginning and end of Japanese games.

Is guess this is the needed step to marry the Xbox division and the new service based Microsoft.

3rd party will make single player games and Microsoft will provide a very powerful box to play them on (Scorpio)

At the same time they'll continue to produce 1st party titles to generate revenue through service and microtransactions and attempt to increase device count for PC/Scorpio/XB1 which are now all Xbox Service Systems to them

It's pretty clear that this is where they're headed and I get why people are disappointed but single player focused games on Xbox will still be around. Just not as many from Microsoft Studios.
