Guys... Jedi is plural.

That could mean: "Rey, The Last Jedi" but it could also mean: "Luke and Rey, The Last Jedi."
True. They could be trying to fake us out. Luke might even have students who are still alive. They, along with Rey and Luke, are still "Jedi." The last Jedi.

Or it could be the Knights of Ren!

So thirty years on from Return of the Jedi, we're still in "The last of the Jedi will you be" territory.

For fucks sake, I thought Return of the Jedi was supposed to see the Return of the Jedi!

Makes sense when you think that in Empire Strikes Back the only proper Jedi was Yoda so we're getting the same thing here with Luke.

Technically, "Jedi" is just a Knighthood of sorts.

You can have the Force with you and not be a Jedi.

Leia is not a Jedi, but she does have some of those midi-chlorians in her blood.

Great title.

Keep in mind that Rey is not a Jedi (yet), so the last Jedi could be Luke. Also the plural of Jedi is Jedi so it could be Rey and Luke.

I do like the title!

Stupid unconfirmed spoiler that would make this movie even better:

Luke: Rey, you are my father

Not really but imagine

nice title.

I wonder if they're gonna keep the "R___ of the ___" format for the third one or going different route.

Maybe the last one will be : Episode IX : Return of the Jedi Again

So either Luke dies or no one else is considered worthy of claiming to be a Jedi hence he's the last Jedi. It's the middle film so I expect a loss for the good guys.

Jedi is both singular and plural. It is a play on Rey and Luke being the same (she is his clone) yet separate Jedi. Also touching on the subtle themes of Christianity of The Father(Luke ), The son/daughter(Rey), and the Holy Ghost(the force).

FWIW - Luke is referred to as "The Last Jedi" in Force Awakens. So I don't think this is necessarily a giant "LUKE DIES" give away. It just means Rey isn't a Jedi yet.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I feel like the title can also sort of be a technicality. I mean, the Jedi order can cease to be without that meaning that good-guy force users with lighsabers are gone forever. One thing the prequels actually did a decent job of showing is that the Jedi actually kind of sucked. They were rigid and bureaucratic. Maybe Rey is the first of a new type of force-user that no longer carries the "Jedi" name.

I have a feeling how Sith --> Knights of Ren

Jedi will become some other title. Midichlorian Avengers or something

The Sith adhered to a specific code. They were a religion, essentially.

Being evil and carrying a red lightsaber are not the qualifications for being Sith.

I can't really explain it but why are The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi feel so much different from A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, Clone Wars. They feel on par with The Phantom Menace. Maybe it's because they feel singular and not about the whole?
