Halo Wars: Definitive Edition |OT| The Best Marketing This Game Will Get

I got the code on the 17th. It took them 6 days, which is less than optimal but not that bad, reading the responses.

It feels good on the X1, but I wanted to try it on PC too as I'm slightly above the minimum req.

It's listed as an Add-on, is it only possible to install if I download HW2 too? (which would probably run better on my X1)
I made some space for HW2 out of curiousity, but the installer is just stuck a 26MB.

I have Halo Wars DE installed on PC, without any data of HW2 on it. So yeah, it should be possible.

Opened from my Library, from there it says: 'This app will not work on your device'.
Meanwhile HW2 is now 50% downloaded. Truly amazing.

It's an i3-2100, GTX650Ti 2GB, 8GB RAM config.

You are probably looking at the wrong version of HW:DE then. Happened to me, too.

Either go to Windows 10 Store -> My Library -> Games (Show All) and install from there or download the Halo App and also install it through that app.

There are 2 lists on the Windows 10 library.

It will show all the games you own, including games that do not work on the device.

So you should have a "more" tab which should duplicate the HW:DE for download under "working on this device"

Wow, thank you all. Halo app shows an install button too, so that might work as well, but found it in the store this way.

Overall I'm having a fun time with this but I just finished the scarab mission today. All I'll say is that I hope HW2 had smarter pathing.

Hey units hide behind this rock

Okay sure just let me just go around the front of the rock and get annihilated first.

Also when you have a group of the same units like Warthogs and you want to charge someone have only one of them go instead of all of them.

Like I know this isn't Starcraft or anything but man. It's been really hard for me to adjust to playing with a controller over M+KB.

I never got around to playing this, but am a fairly big Halo fan and generally enjoy RTS games. Does the gameplay hold up well, 7 years later? Thinking about getting this to play the campaign, and then continue onto HW2 with the ultimate edition. I almost never do ultimate edition/season passes, but this one actually seems like a decent deal with HW1 & season pass thrown in for $20.

In my opinion yes, it does. I played it when it came out and I played DE as soon as I could and it still feels great. Still the best console RTS IMO. HW2 seem to refine those controls too so 👍

Wanted to play PC/Xbox coop and you can't? Isn't half the point of Xbox Anywhere coop cross play and the like? Extremely disappointed.

There is no cross play, and its not the main feature of Play Anywhere.

It's main feature is "play on any device and continue your progression".

Phil tweeted something about "engine issues" in relation to cross play with HW2? Anyone know what he means?

I had hoped cross play coop would be a feature in most of the games going forward, but maybe theres some network engine limitation.

No idea.

I'm not sure if this is the case here but: Company of Heroes 2 couldn't have cross platform play between of, mac and Linux versions because things that were calculated based on the games physics engine would render different results on the various platforms, resulting in desync. IE: a mortar shell would have a slightly different trajectory, an explosion would have a slightly different blast radius, etc.

Oh wow, is there a in-depth on the technical side as to why different versions could cause this?

Finally got my code. Outside of playing the Blitz Beta this is my first experience playing Halo Wars, pretty excited. Any tips or tricks I should know of before I start playing? What's the recommended difficulty for the first playthrough? I will say I was winning most of the matches in the beta by the end, so I think I caught on to the general system at this point.

To me the best difficulty of balance is Heroic.

As for tips n tricks, blast them covies!
use unit abilities

Probably issues with both of them being made deterministic the same way. RTSes use lockstep networking.

edit: and I do believe the Xbox version runs at 30 and PC can go to 60 which makes it even harder. PC players would probably complain about being dropped to a 30hz game update rate in an Xbox co op sesh

It's nothing like blitz for one thing. If you never played an RTS, normal difficulty is probably your best bet.

One thing that the blitz beta may help you with is the different roles of the units.

Wolverine beats air for example.

One thing I've noticed replaying DE with a good set of headphones is that I pretty much missed nearly all the unit chatter in the original game. Grunts have a lot of... well, Gruntian dialogue, the Marines alternate between bravado and fear, and the Elites go on little spiels from time to time about how they'll kill you all. It's nice.

Plus, at this point having the Halo 3-era sounds for all the weapons makes it a nice Halo time capsule.

I finally got around to this game, I bought the special edition when it came out years and years ago but only got a couple levels in before I NOPE'd out (for whatever reason) and never returned.

Why oh why? Man, this game is great! A little light on the story I felt, but the game play is a blast, I just ticked off the 24 hours of gameplay achievement. I played through on Normal and then went back and am working on getting gold/under par for every mission in Heroic.

Heroic really makes you use the vehicles they designed the maps for. Man, that rescue the civvys mission is a pain to get gold on..

But yeah, really got me hyped for #2.

I tried playing HW:DE on my laptop, but it ran really poorly.. but it's an older laptop (Radeon HD 8600/8700M) so I'm guessing it's just crap. Controls really well on Xbox One though.

Yeah the game is defiantly made for Heroic plays :p Its strikes the perfect balance for the game IMO.

So, before HW2 I'm trying to finish the first one's campaign (360 BC) .

I'm curently at the mission five but I would really appreciate some advice, specially with the build order.

So far my strategy has been:
1. two supply pads
2. improving my base to level 2
3. one reactor
4. barracs
5. upgrading supply pads
6. second reactor
7. vehicle depot
8. air depot
9 upgrading reactors

Any advice?

So is this thing leaving early access in a few days? Me and my buddy have been playing through the campaign in co-op this week to get ready for HW2 and get those free blitz packs.

I just can't believe I've preordered HW2 Ultimate 2 days ago and no signs of a donwloadable HW1 yet.

I keep checking my Xbox live msgs and nothing. And I know it could theoretically take 10 days to get this, but it's just absurd. I've payed for it, it's digital, people are playing, and by some random metric I can't play the game I payed for in full.

That's quite something.

Approach the base from south, leave the laser spartan in the tower next to where the cannon will spawn, leave marines in the reactor, push forward to the crater with the 2 remaining spartans. Once clear, set them up in the pelicans, they can take tons of damage in there.

My build strategy usually is SP - Reactor - 2x SP - rest. Meanwhile, upgrade SP-s as soon as you can. Only need air depot for the mission, have 4-6 Hornets out as soon as you can, just leave them hovering over the base exit, they'll attack any enemy who gets too close. You can create marines and take the 2nd outer reactor to reach Lv4, research Chaff Pods, increase army size from Field Armory, and by the time the Spartans arrive, you'll have a bunch of Hornets for them to pilot. The rest is easy after that.

Now that I jumped into the thread: Anyone had problems With the Mr. Punctual achievement? It's on 93%, so 1 mission is missing, but everything has the clock image on Heroic. Tried replaying mission, got until 8 so far, but still didn't pop.

Just trying to beat it? Or get gold/par?

When retreating to the crater, I think I took the side way and claimed the reactor to give a little initial boost. The Covvies ended up killing the guys, but it was nice to have the +1 power for a bit.

Make sure to put your infantry in cover around the entrance to the crater, they'll last a lot longer. Keep the Spartans front and center since their shields recharge. Use them to jack vehicles constantly as well. I always upgrade the supply pads ASAP, before barracks etc. MORE $$$ = GOOD! Turrets are good too, as long as you can defend well enough to stop them from destroying your base, you don't need to make an army until they're nice and upgraded.

I try to time that one so I have a decent sized army by the time the Mega Turret starts its nonsense. Go take it out and build a 2nd base. By that point you should be able to roll on the main base.

Approach the base from south, leave the laser spartan in the tower next to where the cannon will spawn, leave marines in the reactor, push forward to the crater with the 2 remaining spartans. Once clear, set them up in the pelicans, they can take tons of damage in there.

Haha.. or yeah, what he said too :)

I'm having the same issue with the achievement.. the only thing I was wondering is that I beat the missions all on normal first, so if I beat par.. it showed the clock. So I thought I beat them all under par on Heroic.. but maybe the icon was from beating it on normal? Might have to go through them all again.. since it doesn't tell me exactly which one I still need to do!

Thanks for the advice.
Halo Wars is the kind of RTS when economy wins? I mean am I supposed to have a strong economy to constantly resupply my army after being destroyed (in this case, is two SP enough to maintaing a constant production?) or am I supposed to micromanage my units and prioritize unit upgrades?

In general (speaking campaign), I'd say Halo Wars is much more about massing the right combination of units and hitting hard with a death ball.

You can play some different styles (for instance on Mission 14 I usually build a core of vehicles to escort the Elephant and then spam ODSTs when they reach the next base as a method of resupplying my troops) but especially with how the game calculates your score with combat bonuses it really emphasizes the big pushes.

Mission 05 is definitely the hardest in the game, IMO (Arcadia is tough but it's much more manageable assuming you get set up right.)

I'll echo the above that suggests leaving Spartans by the mega turret. I've found it's really hard to get enough troops up and have enough to push it while still defending the crater without having the units garrisoned there.

In Campaign, building an army of Hornets as fast as you can gets you through pretty much everything. In MP yeah, you need to have some reserves to recover after combat.

thank you for the suggestions on mission five but I already beat it (heroic). I let my main base hold while my spartans captured a couple of wraiths and destroyed the big ass covenant cannon. Once with two bases it was easier.

My questions were more inclined to understand on which branch of RTS the game leans to, to micromanagement like warcraft or economy management like age of empires 2. I'm more used to play age of empires 2 and I'm strugling to find the balance to get enough resources to constantly supply my army after each skirmish. For far I've been trying with two supply pads but I'm having troubles suplying my army. I think I should try with three or maybe micromanage better my units.

The store page literally says 7-10 days so I'm not quite sure why you expect it to be anything else.

The system in Camp at least is mostly around Rock Paper Scissor style gameplay, however Hornets with an upgrade or two will mostly melt everything.
EDIT: Wrong thread
No, right thread ;)

Like I said, I know perfectly well what I was signing up for. I just can't comprehend why a digital piece of software which is already out in the open is not available instantly for those who buy it, especially since it never went this way in any other game ever.

I always get three supply pads and focus on either vehicles OR aircraft, not both (and no barracks either). Upgrade everything I can with the.. Armory? Then sell it and build another supply depot.

So I usually end the map with two reactors, some offense making building, and supply pads. Combined arms doesn't work very well I found due to the movement differences.. Everything tends to go as slow as the slowest unit. So just spamming tanks/warthogs or aircraft usually wins the day.

The AI will rarely (on heroic) overtake your base so there isn't much need to build a standing army before you're ready to assault them.
