GI.Biz: Indies on Nintendo: “We've been treated like royalty”

Happens every time.... Wii, Wii U...

Hope it sticks this time
Wii U had pretty good indie support for a still born system. Same with 3DS.

Even up until recently.

Wii was Nintendo's first foray indies and it showed.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I know this is kind of weird, but in the case where an indie game is on the PC and the Switch, I kinda want to buy it on both platforms. Dunno. Some of this stuff just feels right on a Nintendo system.

It's good that indies are getting another platform to thrive on. Nintendo needs to treat them like royalty since they probably won't be getting the bigger 3rd party games.

The way they worked with SMB on Snipperclips shows us how great they are in identifying smaller software that bodes well for their system and audience. Must be the same when attracting indie developers to launch stuff on the platform

I hope Nintendo does a lot collabs like that going forward

It's the spiritual sucessor to Konami's Castlevania games in the metroidvania style we saw on GBA and DS, also SoTN on Playstation 1. It's exactly the same thing as Yooka-Laylee, where the dev left his publishers and kickstarted a game fans want but gaming company wouldn't fund.

Thanks :) Interesting...

I foolishly avoided most indie games in the past (for stupid reasons) but there was so much announced during and after the Nindie presentation that I'm excited for! I love my Switch hardware, so as far as indie games go, if you build it, I will buy. Just so I can play more stuff on it.

Yep. Definitely think my theory with Nintendo and indies is on the ball. I would expect a massivr indie push to fill in the gaps when Nintendo can't release a major game.

Beyond Nintendo recognizing that indies help fill the gaps between 1st party software and absent AAA 3rd party support, I think Nintendo also understands that a big indie hit is a really special thing. Shovel Knight is a great example. When an indie game takes off, I think it resonates with the gaming community more than a predictably great AAA game. Indies are unique and their success builds loyal fanbases.

Image & Form is part-owned by Bergsala which is essentially a regional branch of Nintendo, no shit they got preferential treatment.

Wait what? o_O

That would mean they are partially related to Bergala Lightweight also. Surprised the latter doesn't publish I&F's stuff at retail. They've published numerous 3DS retail games and even a Wii U retail game. Granted I think all were Hello Kitty games, but still.

They have a single Vita game in Japan (Drive Girls) but that hasn't yet been announced for the west. Actually if I'm correct, the Japanese arm and the western arm are a bit different.

I believe Bergala Lightweight are the descendant of Interchannel, and before that NEC Interchannel (related to the NA publisher arm of NEC that published Nintendo and ND Cube's Tube Slider maybe?). If you go to Bergsala Lightweight's JP page, they actually have their legacy games there and those include Sony system games.

Bergsala as you said have had a long lasting partnership with Nintendo, almost to the point of being related. Notice how the western arm has a 100% Nintendo-exclusive slate? Wonder if the arrangement was like this:

Bergala took more control of the western arm, and Lightweight (the JP team that merged with them in this new game company) took control of the Japanese arm, hell, I would not be surprised if Interchannel merged with Lightweight (fun fact, Lightweight developed Eco Creatures on DS with Interchannel), and Bergsala bought that and formed Bergsala Lightweight, though I'm just guessing.

I've followed the company for many years since Eco Creatures (it's a cool game actually). For reasons unknown, the Eco Creatures IP went to Gung Ho (I think it was one of the first they were involved with actually when I saw them pop up years ago).

And that's my long post of the day about something only vaguely on topic based on your post, thanks for reading. :p

You only get treated like royalty if you were chosen though.
The article says itself that they have not opened the floodgates. Zeboyd games posted this in another thread:

I think the issue is that all the Zeboyd game look like Gamemaker rehashes, and lack the style that Nintendo is going after for the launch library.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Sounds like a good approach... The quality of what they have shown so far speaks for it self. Don't need Meme Run and Co. on Switch.

Inside maybe abit too dark for Nintendo...

Someone correct me, are indie games like Hotline Miami available on Nintendo platforms previously?

I really dont think that matters, 3rd partty games dont get shut down because they have a M rating

The problem is Nintendo expects people to call indies on their console "Nindies". Like, we're still gonna call them indies Nintendo.

It's just a branding thing, it doesnt mean much to you, it just subconsciously have people associate these games with nintendo

Binding of issac has been on Nintendo systems. There's nothing content-wise stopping any game from hitting Nintendo systems as long as they aren't rated A

"The way we're looking at Switch is this is a complementary platform. If it's on Steam, then there's no reason why it shouldn't be on Nintendo Switch as well," he remarked.

Sell Steam X Switch bundles then.

How long until the first Humble Switch Bundle. 🤔

Where the fuck is Nidhogg?
Did you ask the devs if they are interested I Switch at all? Don't know if they are active on twitter etc... But shouldnt be too difficult to find out if they have plans.

If you have Steam, definetly check that out too. It's my Indie and Retro Heaven.

This is a smart move. Every year independent developers grow more and more important. Less AAA games are being released as only a handful of them can be truly profitable in an era of $100 million budgeted games.

I hope people at Nintendo would be able to google Zeboyd Games and see Cosmic Star Heroine, a game completely at odds with everything you said.

Yeah, Zeboyd not having heard back from Nintendo kinda sucks. Hope they fix that fast.

This is a good strategy, you never know when the next Minecraft/Undertale/Rocket League/Hotline Miami/etc... will born, so try to get them all is simply awesome.

The indies they CHOSE were treated like royalty.

I once applied for their Nindie developer program. So basically just access to their dev forums, since I wanted to check out if it would be fun to code something for the Wii U.

A couple days later a dude from Nintendo called me, and asked me what my game idea was, and if he could be any help for me getting it done.

No Joke.

They really treat their Nindie devs quite well imo.

Good for indie Devs, new game programmers, and gamers. Will be nice to get some of these games on handheld that wouldn't have been ported to the 3ds or vita.

I have to add some modest skepticism at the origin of that quote. It is one dev, who has had a relationship with Nintendo, and would go as far as to say their relationship is special even before this.

Brjann Sigurgeirsson, CEO of Image & Form Games, who was on hand to demo SteamWorld Dig 2, commented, "We've been treated like royalty. And I would be saying that even if we weren't sitting in this room. We've always felt special [with Nintendo]. If you can make everyone feel special you're definitely doing something right. You're not treating an indie like something you can afford to miss out on - if you treat an indie studio like the way you'd treat a bigger studio or publisher that indie studio is going to love you and do stuff for you forever. And that's exactly the feeling we've had with Nintendo the whole time.

"We released SteamWorld Dig, the original on the 3DS in 2013, and we've never looked back. It's never been a question of what platform we would support first. They inspire loyalty in you by treating you very, very nicely."

Considering Nintendo's missteps with indies in the past, this quote makes me highly skeptical.
