Ringtone Rap, Tumblr Rap, Mumble Rap, that underwater beat thing Drake does on a lot of his songs, whatever style of hip-hop, we've had some different styles this past decade. What do you think? Mind you, just recently we've had 10 years since

That's a decade, so much has changed then. Drake debuted and took over, Kendrick and TDE made waves, Cole's changed from "that cocky young rapper who wants the fame" to "that cemented rapper who has moved back home not caring about fame anymore", Ye's changed from

Just shoot from the hip.

Garbage except for MF DOOM, but then again he is the only hip-hop or rap artist I can listen to without potentially having a brain embolism from how terrible the music is.
Meh, the whole state of music has been in shambles for decades.

This. It's been a steep downhill decline since the mid-90s.

there's more variety than ever, so when im feeling like there's not much appealing to me at the moment, that's kinda on me for not exploring the genre more.

It's been a damn good one, especially since it has really picked up this decade. 2005-2010 was pretty spotty, but it had its ups and downs.

Still, Fuck Soulja Boy's shitty ass excuse for music. Worst rapper of all time.

What is all this negativity? We got Kendrick in the mainstream and just last year A Tribe Called Quest and Danny Brown dropped some of the best albums in recent memory.

A decade ago is what? 2007?

Jesus. It was Up and Down. It seems like every couple of years some bullshit trend takes hold of the mainstream mindshare and everyone runs with it. During 2007 it was Ringtone Rap and it nearly killed off the culture. But that downpoint led to the rise of the Kendricks, Drakes and J.Coles (Basically everyone Kendrick name dropped in Control) and here we are in the fucking Mumble rap era smh.

Didn't really have a problem with Tumblr Rappers per say as OFWGKTA was born from Tumblr. I rate Tyler, Domo, Earl and Frank. So I wonder when the next saviours will pop up. And I wonder what the next bullshit one hit wonder trend is going to be.

Seeing Kanye perform Black Skinhead on SNL is an all-time great hip-hop moment

People love to trash modern rap and call for a return to the 90s, but the 90s had garbage rap too. You're just remembering the best of it.

Modern rap is incredible, you just have to look harder for the good stuff because there are just too many rappers. The fact that anyone can buy a beat on Soundclick, mumble over it, and post it to Soundcloud, means that the genre is incredibly bloated. There are tons of artists not pumping out mumbly trap songs, they're just not as advertised and promoted as Lil Boat, Thugger, Future, etc.

Yeah it's like since the 90s, during every later part of the decade a bad part of hip-hop hits whether it's the Shiny Suit/Mainstream Money Era or the Ringtone Rap Era or now with this Mumble Rap thing we got going on.

Emmmmm I don't know about Danny's new album it wasn't for me. But Xxx was still this decade and that is one of the greatest rap albums. Then we got Kendrick and ye for the mainstream. Run the jewels just dropped in my opinion the greatest duo rap album of all time. Then you got dope party music with asap ferg and lil uzi vert. Honestly fantastic time to be a rap artist but I'm only 20 and just started lisenting to rap 1 year and a half ago so take my opinion for what it is.

One of the biggest problems is a lot of popular rappers were making music for strip clubs.

That tends to change both BPM and content haha

Kanye, Kendrick, and Tribe have dropped classic hip hop albums in the last decade.

and then you got more "underground" artists like Run the Jewels, Danny Brown, and Death Grips dropping some amazing and new experimental takes on the genre.

and the "mumble rap" thing is great if you like fun. Much love to Yachty.

so yeah in conclusion hip hop is doing well

God damn so much negativity lol. I like how the genre really branched out to many different subgenres these past few years. There's something for everyone.
MBDTF
Kanye is goat. Also 90s boom bap is
boring AF.

Same I was trying to go back to old school rap so I can feel out my rap discography, but a lot of it sounds the same. I liked biggie and tribe called quest but that's about it.

I love most of it, to be honest with you, but there's more variety than you're letting on. Kendrick has been on his jazz thing. Schoolboy is on some dark West Coast gangster rap. Danny Brown is going down some psychedelic experimental route. YG brought back an old school funk. Run the Jewels is doing their own thing with their own sound, and this is all disregarding the new wave of guys doing that thing that everyone loves to hate. A lot of it is still good if you stop and really check it out. The last Young Thug album was pretty incredible to be honest.

Run the Jewels is indeed fantastic, and I love both of their solo stuff as well, although I'm not sure how much of it came out this decade. Gotta revisit Xxx - thanks for the reminder!

Anderson .Paak is fenomenal, too. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Some of my favorite rap right now is "mumble rap", then I hate a good chunk of it. I like the fact rappers like Young Thug and Fetty Wap focus on melody so much; and the production is great too.. but then there are big new popular rappers I can't stand (yachty/boat/uzi/desiigner)

I'm 38 and have never not listened to whatever "modern rap" was at the time; from literally the late 80s to now. I love how the genre has really changed over time; I love how technology has advanced so far to influence production but that there are still plenty of artists using drum machines and lo-fi stuff let alone actual instruments.

It's always been my favorite genre; but I also listen to modern indie/alternative music and a bit of various electronic music genres as well.

MBDTF is my favourite rap album of all time
OF ALL TIME
and the only LP that comes close it over 20 years before that so yeah

I also like Yeezys other albums, Lamar, Danny Brown, RTJ, osccasionally Drake, Chance, Grime, the continual push away from Bragadocious Gangsta rap and more

Like anything it's up and down. Stuff may always seem worse until you begin diving into a little more and finding that good shit still exists.

Mainstream/radio rap is just terrible IMO. Its obvious as hell that Black people aren't ultimately the gatekeepers for what gets put on airwaves or else we'd see more socially relevant stuff. There's less variety in acts compared to the 90s and less variety in the messaging. Burn it to the ground, the underground is where its at.

Its amazing, there is so much variety you can listen to really whatever you want. Beats are more amazing than ever before with classic beats are hard to define now because there is so much fire. Lyrical, party, and mumble rap are all popular and have their own subgenres that have their own followings. OG's are still making music and the young cats are poppin too.

I think mid to late 2000s was better than it is now. yaya d4l soulja boy whatever but overall better projects imo.

I do like current production a bit more for the most part though.

This.

Modern rap is great as it's ever been. Get away from the mainstream. 90s mainstream hip-hop had straight trash too: Vanilla Ice? MC Hammer? Sir Mix-A-Lot? Wtf. (I'm aware of Common, ATCQ, Wu Tang, Nas. Just shooting from the hip as the OP says to make a point)

The modern hip-hop era, off the top, has given us dudes that push the genre like Flying Lotus, Madlib, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown. RTJ is killing it. Looking for something more throwback? We have young dudes like Joey Bada$$ bringing in a relatively purist east coast style.

The music is out there. You just need to put in a bit more effort looking for it. This ringtone/trap/Drake rap stuff is the mainstream trash, IMO.

10s are pretty great for me.

Lil Ugly Mane
Kendrick
Kanye (MBDTF anyway)
Danny Brown
Freddie Gibbs
Doppelgangaz
Killer Mike/El-P/RTJ
Cunninlynguists
Elzhi
Death Grips
The Roots
Tribe

All got shit I super love as much as 90s stuff.

And even artists that I don't put as high as my favorites, still got some dope stuff

Schoolboy Q
Vince Staples
Denzel Curry
Earl Sweatshirt

Plenty others.

I even liked Compton ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it's been pretty great, Lots of really diverse artists and I think that's what hip hop needed most of all (even if some of it is of questionable quality). A bunch of artists with differing perspectives, production values, lyrical talent, and topics.

I've been listening to Big KRIT, Kendrick Lamar, Chance, Joey Bada$$, they're pretty much the new guard for me. They've convinced me hip hop is not dead.
