Nier: Automata PC performance thread

Fuck me, I didn't know downsampling doesn't work in borderless unless you change monitor resolution first o_O

Also, if I downsample, there's no point in AA correct?

MSAA is relatively expensive, yes, but you can force FXAA/SMAA externally (see "Use a less expensive form of anti-aliasing" in the OP).

I believe so.

Damn about to try this shit. It ran okay, but some areas would drop to 40fps and one of the bosses chugged the game down to 20. To be fair, I have a very garbage setup.

Downsampling is AA on steroids essentially. You can combine it with other forms of AA if you want, and other AA will be more performance efficient, but it also looks the best.

As it been said multiple times, the AO option in-game includes a pretty good post-processing AA, so as long as that option is turned on, there's actually no need for external forms of AA.

(Though for someone that wants to use an external form of AO, an external form of AA will be needed too).

Sorry - late to the game. Do people think this is a good port or should I get it for the PS4 Pro?

I tend to prefer games on PC if at all possible given I have a very good rig.

PS4 Pro does not maintain a perfect 60 fps in all situations either, just fyi.

It's a great port with a couple of niggling bugs. One is an easy fix (open in windowed mode and then use Borderless Gaming). The other appears to be an encoding problem with the prerendered cutscenes causing them to stutter, and hopefully will be fixed.

If you have a good rig, I say go for it. Especially if you can install it on an SSD.

Turn off AA if you aren't happy with performance - it's MSAA and expensive.

Admittedly I've yet to go through this thread with a fine-tooth comb, but one of the tips/tricks in the OP is how to use a less expensive form of AA and nobody has explicitly pointed out to me that this is unnecessary even though the section ends with a very conspicuous recommendation to mention my name if it ought to be adjusted, so perhaps consider cutting me a little slack. ;)

Even with the FPS capped at 59 there is still some stuttering but better than capping at 60. The cutscene stuttering is really bad. I really hope SE contracts them to fix this issue along with others. Overall I had good performance on my rig through the intro mission.

My rig
OS: Windows 10
GPU: GTX 970
CPU: i7 4790k
RAM: 16 GB

So, um, I just reseated my heatsink and my frametimes doubled. I'm getting 40ms frametimes on a 980ti instead of the 20ms I was averaging before.

Anyone know what the fuck I just did? Temps on the CPU are much lower than before btw.

Edit: Nevermind, it seems like it was some weird displayport/gsync handshake thing, I think it's because I plugged my monitor into a different port than I was using before. I lowered my refreshed rate and then bumped it back up, everything seems normal now!

Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude. ^^;

Can still keep a mention for external forms of AA for those that don't want to use the in-game AO option.

May as well respost this too, comparing AO turned on and off.

Trying to piece together lots of info from this thread, Ill be starting this tonight on a 1080,

So

1440p
No AA
AO on
in Borderless the way to go?

I read a suggestion elsewhere to turn on v-sync even when using Borderless Gaming to help reduce stutter. I think it really does help.

I finally made it to the more open city areas and maintaining 60 FPS has become more difficult in spots. :(

god damn this game is pretty man

Fantastic. Just ordered a 1060.

I'll drop shadows to medium just in case, don't wanna mess with OC yet.

Can it run Witcher 3 at 60fps? Don't care about max settings, but my 680 can't run it at 60 even on low, so I play on a mixture of highest to medium settings and lock it to 30fps. Don't care about hairworks either.

I'm seeing mixed results in benchmarks, but benchmarks always go with highest possible settings for a better comparison, they're not worried about finding the optimal settings for each card.

keep in mind that the game on my end is pushing 95% gpu utilization sometimes, and this is with the gpu overclocked, lol

for witcher 3 yeah, you can get 60fps without hairworks like mifec said, might need to turn down shadows or foliage for consistent framerate I think? but that game has a lot of options, can use the nvidia guide to turn down stuff where you barely notice a difference:

This might be a dumb question, but how do i rollback the drivers for my 480? When i try thru the device manager it defaults to rolling it back to 16.12.1 . rather then 16.11.5

Beside fullscreen issue, it runs fine on a 6600k/1070@1080p max. The view distance on detail and object is pretty bad though. Settings value is way too aggressive even if it was optimized for the og ps4.

is there a solution to the RX 480 whitescreen/crash issue that doesnt involve rolling back drivers yet? (I play other games and would rather not roll back)

"very good rig" is a major understatement for that beast O__O

Still unplayable on 1080Ti + 6700K. The stuttering is insane, even on lowest settings.

Is it G-Sync? 144Hz?

Try lowering your refresh rate and then bumping it back up? Could be the same weird handshake issue I had earlier (which wasn't specific to this game). I've got a 67000k and 980ti and playing at 165hz + gsync and don't have any stutter.

Yeah I think you'll be okay with that monster of a PC.

The cutscene problem will effect everyone regardless of PC because they are basically just a recorded video, but everything else should be great.

I wonder if the game would perform better if you installed it to your 64GB of RAM.

So I guess my problems are normal and you can't run this with MSAA on to any degree, with a 1080, and get locked 60 FPS at 1600p. Wow, I'm kinda surprised this game is maxing out my GPU like this.

Okay I know people are saying MSAA is expensive, but this game IS STILL demanding for the graphics tech behind it.

I'm not shitting on the game. I love it and it runs well for me. But this game isn't as optimized as it could be. The studios don't exactly have the budget to hire teams that specialize in this and I'm sure Square Enix was trying to keep margins low to maximize profits.

People who are having a bad experience with these games should pop in some Koei Tecmo ports. Their newest ones, Atelier Firis and Berserk are WAY too demanding on hardware and one is a "Vita/PS3" (Even though Firis doesn't exist on PS3) hybrid creation and the other is a budget Musou.

But I feel people do have good reason to say this game is too demanding on hardware though:

Here are some local comparisons of Witcher 3 and Nier: Automata. They both have AA turned and AO turned off (no hairworks) with everything else set to max in each corresponding game.

This is my favorite game so far this year, so I'm not trying to demean the game. But people are right in saying this game is too demanding for not reason.

This game should be capable of 90FPS@4K, at least, in my opinion. Especially with a Titan or 1080Ti

Oh for sure, but the thing is that people are mistaking unoptimized game with unoptimized port.

The game also doesn't run as well as it looks like it should on PS4 Pro, for example. There's a difference between a game with shitty performance and a shitty port, and it's important to keep that in mind.

If the PS4 Pro runs it at 1080p with no MSAA and can't keep stable 60fps, why would people expect equivalent graphics cards to run it at 1440p with MSAA? It's something that could happen if it was CPU limited on consoles, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

If this was 1080p and locked 60fps on Amateur PS4, then yeah, this performance is unacceptable. As it stands now, the only thing that's broken is the cutscene framerate.

Like, with my current PC, I usually run games at better settings and framerate than the regular PS4. This game I have to run at 900p, with no MSAA and no motion blur to get 60fps with frequent drops. Then I went on youtube and watched the same part played on vanilla PS4 with a framerate counter, and it dropped more on the same parts and had drops in parts I had no issues. So, as underwhelming as it is to play in 900p, it still falls in line with what I should expect from my PC.

Thankfully, I don't think I'll have to play at 900p for long, I'll finish Night in the Woods before playing this, and my new graphics card should arrive this week, so I'll probably be able to play at 1080p.

Updated SLI profile: 0x081002F5

My previous profile broke the HDR tonemapping. This one has decent scaling and doesn't have the same issues. There's still flickering in the pause screen, but since it's such a minor issue (and since Metal Gear Rising had the same problem - Nier Automata is very clearly based on the same engine) I'm not going to bother trying to fix it.

Sorry if this has already been answered, is there a fix for that issue with the hud when using borderless windowed, namely the flickering button prompts?

Not sure if this issue has been mentioned but are the black bars top bottom on some of the cut scenes suppossed to be there? They are transparent and you can see the game is rendered full screen underneath them.

it's my monitor, or in the first area/desert the colour it's like brownish/sepia? Because from this screen

it seems not

Much of the game is (intentionally) pretty bleak, but it drastically changes based on environment. Some areas are pretty colourful, others are almost completely desaturated.
