Can't wait. I liked MK8 on Wii U, but I've always preferred handheld Versions.I played MK:A, MK:DS and MK:7 a ton more then 8.

These range from having recently released to releasing before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there's only nothing to play if you aren't looking.

I mean... I'm glad if you like those games and all but they're not exactly system sellers. Especially since other platforms have 100s of those types of games.

Does anyone know if all the content is unlocked from the beginning? or will you have to unlock it like the Wii U version. I know it's a new game but it's being labeled as the "deluxe" version, I thought everything might be unlocked from the start.

That's not what he was responding to. The guy said that there's nothing else to play on the system. There's a decent spread of stuff so far that at least one of those is something worth checking out if you're seriously dying for anything to play.

As someone who didn't play Mario Kart 8, I'd have rather unlocked the characters.

It would give a greater sense of reward and progression.

I just highly doubt that guy meant "There are literally 0 games on the Nintendo Switch." I'm sure he's logged onto the eshop just like everyone else.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the online portion going to have lobbies that I can just join and play or does Nintendo still use the friend codes?

I'm interested in this cause the switch is pretty cool so far and the thought of playing his online seems really cool

To MK8D on a portable device is nuts.

Well I mean, there's a six-year gap there. Comparing Mario Kart Wii to Mario Kart 8 is similarly nuts.

Definitely getting it. Best kart racer ever, makes all the others like Sonic Transformed look like jokes.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed isn't really a "kart" racer though. It has more similarly to traditional arcade racers than the "kart racing" genre.

The former.

Friends can create "Tournaments" which are like ongoing lobbies with set start and end times etc.

Friend Codes weren't on Wii U so aren't used in way. On Switch they're just for adding friends outside of games anyway.

You cannot change the side you are drifting towards, neither in Mario Kart Wii.
The only drift mechanic change compared with MKW is that you cannot perform an air trick while holding a drift in MK8. This was already removed in Mario Kart 7.
ah ok, so pink boost is level 3 boost like in sonic racing. im sure i played a mario kart where u can change direction while holding drift boost, maybe it was double dash

ive not played mk8 yet so can't comment on that but sonic transformed shits on all other mk games, the sense of speed is amazing and the handling is ridiculously good. mk8 200cc mode is the appeal to me, without that mode i wouldnt even be interested in the game

Users can create Tournaments, which if you set the times right can just act like a public or private room. GAF usually has a couple of rooms, so you can simply enter those and find people to race against from here without being their friend.

I play my switch primarily as a handheld so my question is how many players does this support online if I am going to use it in handheld through wifi ? Is it up to 12 or is that only docked ?

So fucking stoked for this as I never owned a Wii U, this will definitely justify my Switch purchase with the Mrs.

Naive question: why pick it up now with a Switch and not a couple years ago on Wii U? What makes you jump the gun now that wasn't there during Wii U days?

Wii U underperformed because it was an undesirable product to a lot of people. The branding and the concept weren't universally liked and for that reason the system mostly consisted of core Nintendo fans.

I feel like the Wii U could have had any game and it still wouldn't have sold much more than 13 million. There are dozens of first party Wii U games that reviewed extremely well and they didn't push units. Mario Kart 8 didn't, Splatoon didn't and Super Mario Maker didn't. They should have but people simply didn't want a Wii U. It's a case where software just couldn't do anything to push the hardware, no matter how good the games were.

Keep in mind that the tracks weren't designed with 200cc in mind. Personally I dislike 200cc. It just feels broken IMO

1. Don't get it if you didn't like it
2.

The majority of gamers don't play indie games. Game sales numbers is proof of that. He might dislike indie games, only likes triple A titles.

What you say is true, but nothing there makes any sense to me. Games are games. "indie game" isn't a genre. "AAA game" isn't a genre.

I will never understand that way of thinking.

Yeah that's true perhaps I was a bit closed minded. There's a nice selection of indie games now but the AAA stuff is in th future, not too far mind you.

My views match with the poster above me, indie games are still games just like any other.

The point is people seems to be buying Switch(es) to play Nintendo games that they didn't seem to care for on Wii U. I believe this hardware is gonna sell like hot cakes come Q4.

Well there's this.

One thing I wonder is if they'll fix the acceleration tier.
ie. 3.5 accel should be 3.5, not 3 etc.

We still don't know how the multi-Switch play is going to work right? Wondering whether it will require multiple copies and a network connection. Guessing yes at least to the latter but if no to both would be the most amazing plane-ride gaming you can do.

Yep it's the hardware. Switch is desirable, and Wii U wasn't.

Software usually pushes hardware but I don't think that was true for Wii U

It supports 8 players local without wifi (but yes, you'll need 8 systems and 8 copies).

Still a cool feature though.

Ah interesting. So as long as you each have a copy you can play on multiple Switches then? What connection method does it use?

Thanks for the answers guys!

I'm sooooooo in for this! Loving my switch and Zelda and am now looking forward to battling gafers online in Mario kart! Haven't played one since Mario 64!

If only I could put horizon and Zelda down lol

Edit dang I just realized I'm prob gonna have to buy a pro controller lol

To be fair, other than Zelda, 1 2 Switch, and Bomberman, all of the Switch's games are indies.
Yeah no arguments here, I just think a reasonable chunk of the user base is actively buying indie games. FAST RMX and Snake Pass for instance seem to have done very well. Snake Pass has been number 1 on the eShop since the charting system went up.

I really wish they had made a faithful remake of Rainbow Road 64 and not the extremely short version that ended up in 8.

I really like how they remade it but its ruined by being one giant lap with 3 checkpoints.

Like cool you removed the railing and made the chain chomps a bigger threat but it should be 3 actual laps.

I really wish they'd just give it another lap. I think it'd be too long to do 3 like the N64 version (especially on the lower engine classes), but it's over in a flash on the higher ones.

Let's be honest, the majority of games on any platform aren't system sellers. They're there so people who bought consoles can feel good about having more games to play.

I'm gutted at the lack of download play, though I suspect it's a bit unwieldy given the large data size of all the assets. In retrospect it's amazing how flexible that feature was on MK7.

I hope future Switch multiplayer games get a downloadable demo you can play in multiplayer similar to the 2nd Mario Party on 3DS.

I've always thought Nintendo would be shooting themselves in the foot not to offer an extremely limited slice of all their multiplayer games for free.

1 cup + 1st row of characters for Mario Kart
4-5 characters + Battlefield for Smash
Testfire maps + weapons for Splatoon 2 (offline only)

But then I saw how people reacted to Mario Run and now I'm not so sure.
