Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review thread

my only question to the game is why nintendo don't add rumble HD to it. Is it too hard? or actually the rumble HD is not as good as we thought?

I dont think that's really an improvement, it's just more cups, and cups are lame imo

I would settle for MKDS missions since this series will never get DKR or CTR treatment

That's fine, but that's just your subjective take. I don't see why a specific type of upgrade or improvement of single player is expected just because the release is full price. But it's not unreasonable for you to feel it's not enough value for you, of course.

Super late on this response --need to keep up better with GAF -- but I'm the DualShockers reviewer.

The $100 point I put in the conclusion was an average for more dedicated MK players -- people who grabbed Wiimotes, amiibo figures, and other peripherals would climb wag over $100. That's an assumption though, and I think a fair criticism of my own review

do you have another review where you apply this logic to a game? seems like pretty silly logic to me but if you're applying it consistently then ::shrug::

How can a remaster of a game be rated less than the original if it includes all content from the original plus more pack in DLC and performance enhancements?

The point I was trying to make was that people who have spent $72 or $120, or somewhere in between and hundreds of hours will see much less pay off in the remaster and should consider the purchase more heavily.

That said, MK8D is fantastic and a must buy for those who either never played the original or grabbed the DLC. If you've got any questions, let me know.
I personally don't think it's fair to include Amiibos in the pricing honestly. Those came out way after original Mario Kart 8 release date. plus your were told what their functions were and how limited it was. That's sounds like it's more on you rather then the game.

Buts that's just my opinion. I find the score fair anyways, just not sure I agree with the peripherals argument.

great base game + all the DLC included + more content on top of that = positive reviews

Sure, it's still a full-priced remaster. I played the shit out of MK8 with its DLC. The addition of a battle mode sounds pretty great, but not $60 great. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Enhanced ports are a very weird beast to review, though, so understandably reviews are all over the place throughout. For some games reviewers act like enhanced ports being $60 is a crime against humanity. For others it's an afterthought slipped in at the end of a 10/10 review. For some the base game being great has no bearing whatsoever, for others it's essentially a guarantee sure-fire hit with critics because they loved the original and critics tend to never replay or stick around much with a game past its initial launch review window.

Wait is there actually confirmation that there is no HD rumble in this? I thought I remembered a lot of impressions talking about how they could feel the different road surfaces.

With this, I think the Switch will have it's killer app, outside of Zelda obviously.

Seeing friends and family come together anywhere and breakout into multiplayer sessions at home or on the go is the word-of-mouth-hook that could potentially make the Switch the must-have item in the holidays. Should have launched with it to begin with but eh.

Even though I played the WiiU version for hundreds of hours, I am still super-hyped for this. The portability and battle-mode alone make it worth the price of admission. Good critical reception is not a surprise, but it still warms my heart.

I mean, a lot of the salt is because people already enjoyed the hell out of it 3 years ago at the same price.

To be fair, it would actually cost more to buy Mario Kart 8 on Wii-U w/DLC today than it would to buy on Switch if you're just counting the cost of the game and not hardware.

Cuz Nintendo.

Jeez this is doing better than I thought it would. Currently hovering around 5-6 points higher than the original, already well received game.

This is probably the least excited I've been for a critically acclaimed Nintendo game given that it's' a port, but newcomers are in for a good time.

Hmm... I get the feeling you're confusing that HD Rumble speculation video that described using vibrations to mimic road surfaces with thinking that it got put into Mario Kart.

Great reviews and i'll be buying.

This is the reason why the Mario Kart series has been surpassed by the likes of Diddy Kong Racing and Sonic an All Stars racing transformed for me. Great single player experiences.

I wish SUmo Digital would make another one, Sonic All stars racing Transformed looks fantastic on PC. I would love a new kART Racer from them with the thing's they know now. It would make for great competition with Mario Kart.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just pointing out how the positive scores aren't the least bit confusing even if you disagree with them based on your own personal value judgement.

I personally wouldn't include amiibo and especially cost of additional controllers into this view, but I agree with your general point of a strongly reduced value for original owners (as with ever "next-gen port" really). Thank you for responding to this, I think that's really nice and helps the constructive discussion.

I don't recall seeing that video actually. I remember hearing this from people who played the demos at the Switch events but I don't know if there's ever been confirmation.

I've read it does have hd rumble but not overly done.

Do you remember where you read that? It's weird that it's so hard to get confirmation on HD rumble support in general.

It looks great. I'm trading in almost all my 3DS and Wii U games tomorrow to help pay for it when I buy it next week.

Sure, but I'm also pointing out how the value judgment of reviewers varies wildly. Sometimes a full-priced remaster gets shit on, others reviewers couldn't care less about price.

I don't even disagree, the more I think about it the more I find myself disagreeing with that figure. Peripherals shouldn't have been included in the math.

That said, it doesn't bear much impact on the score (thankfully) -- my issues with MK8D, while few and far between, never really hinged on the originals price. I think the package is Great (8.0) nonetheless -- an absolute must buy for people who never picked up the DLC or game on Wii U.

Well the fact that I think the game isn't being sold new at most retailers hurts trying to get it at a decent price. It's anywhere from $33.99-44.99 used from place like bestbuy.

That's kind of shitty, but also the Wii U is pretty much dead and good luck trying to buy it new as well.

Lol at all the salt in this thread.

Meanwhile I will enjoy the hell out of this game.

I kind of understand some of the arguments. Although the base game is great, they could of added quite a bit more to the port to warrant the full price(although the Wii U version is still priced really high).

With regards to the controller thing. Yeah.. I really wish I could use my Wii u pro controller/ wii mote/nunchucks on my switch so that it's potentially one less controller that I ought to purchase. Sure we can play two player via joycons but that's going to suck. Kinda of stuck in a dilemma where I'm not sure if I need to purchase 2 pro controllers or not, for the people not interested in playing with the joycons.

Then again I can't use 360 controllers to play my backwards compatible 360 games on my xbox one.

Kind of lucky as I traded in my mario kart and earned $60, but now I have to buy more controllers.

Can each JoyCon part act as a controller? Ie one JoyCon, two controllers?

This was shown in the Switch reveal trailer, and, yes, you can use each Joy-Con as its own controller.

The Wii U version is still priced exactly the same as the Switch version.
