Kotaku: "Injustice 2's Facial Animation Is So Good It's Uncanny"

There's still a little weirdness with some of the character faces when you look at them from certain angles... it's similar to the LA Noire problem to an extent, where they very conspicuously look superimposed over the models in odd ways.

I notice it most with Supergirl, I think it's the hair/hairline that breaks the effect.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT

Honestly I think this face looks really cool.

The facial animations are incredible. Exceptional job by NRS, especially considering INJ1. They are progressively getting better in this dept. Kudos to them

Wishes going forward:

Better body animations (Still lacking in this area)

Graduate to UE4.

I'm pretty sure they are actually using UE4. They're listed on Unreal's website as using it.

It's the mobile version of the game that uses UE4.

The console version uses a HEAVILY modified version of UE3, the same one they used in MKX only further expanded on.
Is this 100% confirmed?

Hmm. Their materials seriously look like UE4 mats so I assumed that the website was referring to the console version. If it is UE3 they have done incredibly impressive work to the renderer

I know. A majority of people complaining about the animations would NEVER have noticed anything if it weren't for that previous article/video. Now, they think the animations are 'janky.'
No, people have been complaining about NRS animations since MK9. It is really not a new thing, go look at IJ2 trailer threads on gaf before that video came out and you'll see complaints.

Edit: here, i saved you the trouble
The animation is butt.
Why does this game look so much worse than MKX artistically? Faces look so weird with the very obvious mo-cap and the attack animations look stiffer.
Yikes at those animations. Come on NRS.
literally just from the first page of this thread http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1357611 which came out well before that video

You are correct

According to Wikipedia, they are using UE4

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetherRealm_Studios

Perhaps that has a lot to do with the improved facial animations. Once the lower body follows suit, the game will flow even better visually.
According to lucebuce they're only using it for the mobile version, which is surprising :p I wish they would confirm it somewhere as the materials really do look like ue4.

They're still using their heavily modified version of UE3, they're only using UE4 for the mobile versions. Even GG:Xrd(UE3 game) showed up in some UE4 show-reels, Epic does that sometime.

I have the mobile version installed, and it shows the Unreal Engine 4 logo when it booted up. I don't think that the console game uses UE4, as that would have been reported.

It does make sense though. The mobile version was made by a completely separate team so they could afford to go for something newer, while the console dev team already had a perfectly functional engine that they've put time and money into which suits their needs very well so why change when you can get equally good results with what you have.

I'm fascinated how far they have come with UE3, considering the age of the engine. If INJ3 uses UE4 from the ground up, along with the improved animations from top to bottom... We will have a visual masterpiece.

I think if you showed the average person Injustice Wonder Woman and Injustice 2 Wonder Woman and told them they were both from the same company, they'd call you a dirty liar lol

ah ok, that's very confusing and annoying ^^

yeah, definitely. ij2 looks visually gorgeous anyway so whatever they've done to ue3 is working well for them

it is pretty incredible, I would put this up there with Arkham Knight for UE3 games. it even has much nicer materials which were an area that AK was a little short (although that game was very "wet", which helped them a lot)

I remember the first gameplay segments that we have seen, and how rough it looked.

This game has changed so much, it is very impressive.

Honestly most impressive character in game is Black Canary her facial emotes are not over the top so she doesn't look like on a coke binge.

Plus she doesn't have a voice that like having a pickaxe smashed into your skull like Harley so that's a massive bonus

The facial animations weren't uncanny or unsettling, they were insanely impressive. Injustice 2 has the one of most realistic facial animations I've ever witness, NRS did a splendid job.

Very clever way of handling the hair issue there as well. Those curls remove the need for the janky "split ends" issue that a lot of games have. Very cool.

Now if only the actual game animation and art design wasn't so shit. Looking forward to the NRS produced CG film though.
The art design is alright, it just veers in a more realistic direction than something more comic book-esque like (U)MvC3. You are right about the in-game combat animations, but some improvements have been made.

heavenly sword is still the golden standard
Yeah Ninja Theory's games in general has been awesome when it comes to both acting and facial animation. And L.A Noire too. This is still great though, makes me want to get the game even thought the first one was kinda bad.
