[Rumour] Shenmue 1 and 2 HD Remaster Coming 2017

Have a feeling it will be an E3 announcement, Maybe a Shenmue III trailer or gameplay and then right after that they announce an HD collection of I & II to keep the hype but as a way of saying "play this while you wait"

That would be the ideal way to go about it I think, yes. Maximum hype and exposure that way. Promotes 3 further while getting the first two games on everyone's radars.

H-Y-P-E-!-!-!
Personal view: This tweet is more about a potentially imminent unveiling of III than remasters, but undoubtedly talks have been had and wheels have started turning long before now on Shenmue HD. S'all good. Just gotta wait.

Is Shenmue really that dense? Cleaning up a bunch of textures and improving some character models and hopefully modernising the control of Ryu and it's job done. Sure that's a lot of work but it' not like they're redesigning the game from scratch or anything.

Add new camera angles in fighting sequences and some mechanics of Shenmue 2 to 1 like jump to different time of day.

So how are they going to get around the issues this time that have prevented it from coming out in the last 10 years?

Fuck - it's too much to hope. I'm going to maintain a Last Guardian stance, and refuse to hope until an actual announcement or trailer. My emotions can't take it any other way.

I hope they go the REmake route and add modern controls in addition to the original. Don't let us down.

I agree - except using REmake as an example. The "modern" controls were fucking awful, and completely undid a lot of what makes the gameplay great.

If it was tech licensing related, maybe they re-coded some parts from scratch.

The ideal solution would really be to essentially remake them utilizing the work Suzuki has done with Unreal Engine for Shenmue III. That's probably asking too much right now though.

Maybe someday in the future when the series has finished.

Guys, i didn't play this Shenmue back in the day. I hear that was big, kinda groundbreaking, etc. My question is from a gameplay perspective, this game is still legit? I mean, is fun and still holds up? Not trying to troll or anything.

The controls may feel a bit awkward initially but other than that they hold up better than most current releases IMHO .

They're clunky, but not impossible. If you were playing games back then, you'll figure it out. I can see younger gamers not having the patience for it though.

The controller could be a little difficult for modern patterns (aka twin analogs) but I believe this won't be a problem in a remaster because they will/can update that.

This would be perfect. Get everyone excited about the new game, and casually saying the the first 2 will be available soon.

Yeah, I'm not settling for digital-only either. I've got to have a physical copy to sit alongside my day one Dreamcast boxsets.

What I'm not clear on, is the total amount funded.

It's at around $6.8 million in crowd-funding atm, and Yu Suzuki stated that he could make the perfect Shenmue III with about $10 million - so is Sony giving him the other $3.2 million?

Sony and Sega could invest, the game could still hit $10m after E3 this year.

Well there was a kickstarter but that wouldn't cover the costs in any way. Sony would of put in on it.

They said they didn't though. Most of the funds comes from the KS, Shibuya Productions and other partners. What Sony is doing (well, Sony 3rd Party Productions) is basically publishing duties on the PS4 version, marketing stuff and PR.

If it is Bluepoint Games and they announce a remaster/remake of Shenmue 1 & 2 ... the internet will crash ;)

Seriously. For me this would equal the announcement of Shenmue III itself.

The general assumption is that Blue Point games (Uncharted Collection, Gravity Rush Remastered) will be at E3 with something. Huber is just getting people hyped.

Maaan, how you gonna talk about blue point and not mention Ico/SOTC collection, their finest hour?

Well fair enough. There could be some deal with them, esp if SEGA were looking for a porting house and Blue Point were available.

There was that version of Shenmue 2 years ago on Partner Net though, which from memory we never got to work, at work. But the game was up there, or some files relating to it. I guess there was a plan to release it on 360 at one point but it never happened.

I do not want to aim this at you, but this kind of thinking stifled the kickstarter as people spreading this around helped create the illusion of this being a scam and that Sony was financing it anyways.

I wish Sony was clearer on this - like saying "We will fund whatever is left after crowd-funding ends to give Yu Suzuki the opportunity to create the ultimate Shenmue III" - something like that.

given how III literally came from their efforts, that's my assumption, yeah

were you around for E3 2015 or nah

Shenmue III came from Sony's efforts ? I mean, right they gave a spotlight at E3 but the big push came from Shibuya Prod though:
http://www.shibuya-productions.com/fr/projets/shenmue-iii.html,010
And the fans did the funding.
Also yes, people were around for E3 2015 and despite all the echo chamber among Shenmue fans, the game didn't reach all the stretch goals (even though, the campaign was ran by amateurs)

Took over the licence ? Funded 3 ? None of this happened though.

What happened though is this kind of rumour being spread around by a lot of concerned gaming bloggers and gaming sites :/.
Seeing people still thinking that the Kickstarter was essentially jus to collect pocket change and that Sony was always going to give the rest to YsNet thus making the kickstarter a bit of a sham... well it makes me think that such kind of rumour was effective and may have very well lowered the amount of money people would invest in its kickstarter.
