The behind the scenes looks at Beyond Good and Evil make it look super incredible.

1. Dragonball Fighter Z - Wooooooo boy!!! Where the hell did this game come from?!? This is basically a culmination of everything I've wanted out of a Dragon Ball Z game ever since I saw the very first episode during Toonami on Cartoon Network so many years ago. It is quite literally a dream game and not only is it a dream game but it's even more beautiful than I would ever have dreamed it would be. The fact that it's mechanics are so heavily influenced by MvC2 (legit my third favorite game of all time) and Guilty Gear (a series that I have long held in very high regard solely off their rock solid fighting mechanics) is just the icing on top. I find myself genuinely excited about the potential roster for this game and what sort of moves and mechanics that roster can bring to bear and that is something that hasn't happened for me with a fighting game since Smash Bros on GameCube. Words simply cannot express how much I am anticipating this game. My only complaint/reservation is that I have to wait until 2018 to play it.

2. Super Mario Odyssey - There is only one word I would use to describe the trailer I watched for this game during the Nintendo Spotlight; JOYOUS. What a fantastic showcase for this game. A reveal of a new gameplay mechanic with untold possibilities and implications for the gameplay and a peek at those possibilities accompanied by some of the most enthralling worlds and genuinely joyful musical accompaniment I've heard out of a Mario game in well a VERY long time. Nintendo really could have something special here and I find myself more hopeful about them and their de facto mascot than I have been since GameCube. Well done Nintendo. Here's hoping you deliver.

3. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - I was already interested in this game just by virtue of it being a sequel to what I'd argue to be the best single player FPS campaign in the past decade (with Doom being a close second) but the trailer and the lengths to which they have gone to build up the world and capitalize on a sort of corrupted Americana angle just has me absolutely giddy about playing through it. Machine Games is always an immediate buy for me but this game truly looks like something special as it seems like they've finally been given the sort of budget they actually deserve and just a peek of what they are doing with that extra freedom is infinitely more interesting than any other shooter I saw at E3.

4. Ni No Kuni II - I absolutely adored the first game in this series and the gameplay shown at E3 was just drop dead gorgeous and compelling in a way that the combat in the first title never seemed to achieve. Very very excited to jump into this gorgeous world and see what they have in store.

5. Vampyr - Every bit of info that I see from this title makes me more interested. I love the setting and it's one that really doesn't see a lot of attention these days. Couple that with gameplay that seems incredibly flexible and fun along with gameplay that emphasizes player choice and meaningful consequence throw in some good old fashioned Victorian Vampire fun and tie it all up in a genuinely fascinating story concept/setting and you'll have to pry this game from my cold dead hands when it finally comes out.

6. Shadow of the Colossus - Part of me can't believe they are actually doing this and the other part of me is fixated on the possibilities inherent in a remake of this caliber. Will we see additional colossi? Will we get a re orchestrated score? How will they update the controls to be more appealing to the modern gamer? So many questions to be answered but regardless of the answer I will definitely be there day 1 to find out.

7. Ori and the Will of the Wisps - I'm still awestruck at just how gorgeous the Ori games are. Considering how small the studio responsible for these games is it just seems like sorcery to me that they are able to make such incredibly and consistently beautiful games and then tie that beauty in with genuinely moving musical accompaniment and storytelling to create one of the most emotionally wrenching stories I've played this gen. There is simply no way this isn't a day one purchase for me and I have no doubt it will be even better than their first.

8. The Evil Within 2 - Anytime a trailer has me saying "what the fuck" while simultaneously pressing the replay button to watch it again it's a sign there's something special on display. (I'm looking at you too here Death Stranding). In the trailer the imagery shown gives the impression that the studio has really been unleashed and given the freedom to dive all the way down the rabbit hole they poked their heads in the first go around. After the flawed but simultaneously stellar experience that was Evil Within I can't wait to see what the additional freedom and undoubtedly substaintially larger funding means for the sequel.

9. Metro: Exodus - Hearing this game was heavily inspired by STALKER was enough to make me perk up and take notice but couple that with the gorgeous visuals on display and an honest to God Steam Engine locomotive (who the hell doesn't love a good old fashioned train?!?) has me all fired up. Full steam ahead! 2018 can't come soon enough.

10. Anthem - I am very very skeptical that this game won't live up to the promise that the initial gameplay reveal trailer showed but what was shown was easily enough to make it on this list despite my doubts about how it will turn out in the end.

(Dis)Honorable Mentions:

Spider-Man - Seeing so many QTEs really bummed me out. I liked what I saw of the combat but I really hope the game isn't filled with these sorts of QTEs especially since as they are now. They are really disruptive and seeing them pop as buttons all over the screen really ruins the moment. This being a Spider-Man game and having what looks like some really fantastic animation work to go along with its fun looking combat systems is almost enough to mean it makes the list... almost. Just... please Insomniac, please, for the love of God, make the QTEs more subtle and less prevalent. I beg of you.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 : this would absolutely be on the list if I had a shred of confidence that the actual game will live up to the trailer they showed. As much as modern Bioware has disappointed lately they come nothing close to the shenanigans Ubisoft get up to with their reveal trailers and that precedent is enough to make me incredibly wary of getting excited for this especially seeing how early in development it actually is along with it's professed emphasis on a shared multiplayer world which to me is just not at all what I would want out of what they showed.

Gundam Vs - had Dragonball Fighter Z not been revealed and blown me away this would have absolutely been on my list but for whatever reason my excitement for DBFZ was so all encompassing it sort of totally eclipsed my excitement for this title. That said I'll still be buying Gundam Vs the day it is available as I've loved every single entry of the series I've played so far but I'd be lying if I said after seeing DBFZ that I wasn't a bit disappointed that it's playing it so safe and not really mixing much up at all gameplay wise.

I only included games that had gameplay. If this was most excited reveal then Metroid Prime 4 would be number one and BGE2 would be number 2.

The fact MP4 exists is enough for me... When I saw that sign forming, even as a 37yr old man I was emotional!

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed Hidden Agenda, as it wasn't in Sony's actual press conference, but the pre-show. It's from the people that made Until Dawn, and you play on the couch with your friends and control the game with your phone. As I played Until Dawn with my friends passing around the controller, a game that bakes that in, and that has some cool disproportionate information mechanics is right up my alley.

...

Nothing else really caught my eye this year or I have various opinions on. I liked Assassin's Creed Origins but I am suspicious enough to where I don't feel the hype. Far Cry 5 looks too much the same. God of War looks disappointing to me. I'm just not interested in the direction. Maybe if it wasn't Kratis, but what they are doing with him feels too unnatural to me. Wolfenstein caught my eye. Looks cool, but im not familiar with it, and am particularly uninterested in FPS games nowadays. Evil Within actually surprisingly looked good to me, but I am wary after the reception of the first one. Anything else I am either just completely uninterested in, or am content with just not paying attention to it until reviews/word-of-mouth come in.
