I'm looking forward to the gems thread, I do love a bargain and I have £6 left in my wallet.

Any good space combat games that I could grab on sale?
Prefer more arcade-like than sim, although I enjoy both. Something more akin to Rogue Squadron as opposed to x-wing in terms of gameplay.

Square probably made more money in one day of Steam sales than the entire cost of the PC port, but unwilling to fund a small patch

If you keep giving money to the company that fucks you over and over again, don't expect said said company not to fuck you over and over again.

Could anyone recommend me a game or two? Here are a few games I really enjoyed for reference:

The Witness
Her Story
Regency Solitaire
SquareLogic
Snakebird
Hexcells

I do own Talos Principle but I didn't like the first person-y ness of the puzzles. I was thinking perhaps getting Stephen's Sausage Roll?

It would actually be cool to have a recommendation thread... i.e., post a few games you like and ask for suggestions.

Have you played Obduction? Sounds like it'd be right up your alley. First-person, but the puzzles are mostly environmental and crafted into the world and not gamey like in Talos.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I think the real frustration is that 5 years ago the PC marketplace (and Steam in general) was seen by a lot of larger AAA publishers as a sort of add-on service. Player counts were still pretty low in general (especially compared to consoles at the time) so it wasn't that big of a deal to steeply lower the price of your game to an absurd amount for a 8 hours out of the year during a large sales event like the Summer Sale on Steam. The store was laid out differently for sales back then too, so the larger publishers would trade their larger temporary discounts for storefront prominence and it worked out so that we the hyper-vigilant consumer benefited from this greatly and were rewarded with AAA games for under $10.

The landscape has changed though, and mostly for the better. The advent of refunds means that limited-time deals don't make sense any more. It sucks, but it's still better year-round for consumers. The subsequent store updates and looser curation means there's more games on Steam releasing than ever before, and still most of these games have some discount or another which I would argue is still a benefit to consumers in general even if it's not a benefit to you personally.

And, obviously, Steam sales are bringing in more money than ever so these changes are working for Valve on a business level. This also means people are willing to pay the asking price of games during the sale so any argument that "they should be cheaper" is kinda pointless. Yes it sucks that you can't get recent AAA games for $5 any more - and maybe for you personally that means these sales aren't as good as they used to be. It's important though to understand the implications as to why that is so that you can temper your expectations accordingly.

Definitely SSR. I think it's at an all time low:

Yeah, the Steam sales hasn't been great for the last couple of years, but I still find something I want. Picked up Wasteland 2: Director's Cut and Shadows of Mordor: GOTY edition. Was a little surprised Shadows of Mordor was that cheap, but then I remembered, its 3 years old.

I was creating my ranger on Wasteland 2 and I couldn't decide between my attributes, weapon skills, appearances, and quirks lol. I must have spent half an hour staring at the character creation, increasing and decreasing stats to see if the benefits justify the stat allocation. I just don't want to screw over my character if I allocated wrong lol. Charisma seem like the most useless attribute compared to the rest even when I dumped all my points into it versus other stats.

To better understand why the prices are the way they are now vs back in the day?

no need. I just dont purchase the games I would have and be on my way. Don't need to understand why.

yea, I still found stuff I am interested in. Which is why I got over 100 dollars worth of stuff in my cart.

But there are just certain games that feel like they have been out forever and I look at the "sale" and it just doesn't seem like "oh damn, great sale!"
that's all.

I can have that opinion I feel like.

Squarecells! It's the Hexcells guy, but with square cells instead of hexagon cells

Charisma can be useful in some situations since it allows dialogue options you won't get otherwise.

I really enjoyed Wasteland 2, have fun :)

Sure but there were no refunds back then. And you had to stress yourself mentally for days to make sure you don't miss out on a flash deal. Today you can actually buy whatever you want and start enjoying the games right away.

Besides the deals are still great today so I don't really see why everyone is complaining so much.

Bad Rats for 50 cents shut up and buy it SteamGAF.

I would trade refunds for flashes and dailies.

If you're giving money to the company that fucks you over and over again, don't expect said said company not to fuck you over and over again.

Yep.

So people are now comparing steam sales to physical console game sales? Where one has to account for printing the disc, shipping and overhead for the B&M, while the other does not? You've got to be kidding me.
Also, before the argument for digital sales on the console front comes up, you do know they can't undercut one (physical copy vs. digital) without mauling the other, right?
You can't bite the hand that feeds.

On topic: very happy with Streets of Rogue. It's amazing.

I can't believe there are people who'd rather have dalies back instead of the ability to refund games so Steam sales can feel like a "special event" again.

Ha, cool concept. I'll check out some gameplay, as at first blush it doesn't totally appear to me but I'll give it a closer look, thanks.

I'll definitely grab it then. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

Squarecells! It's the Hexcells guy, but with square cells instead of hexagon cells

Oh awesome, didn't know about this. At $0.89 it's a no-brainer, will buy. Thanks!

I think its time we move on from this conversation. There are the people who have their mind set on steam sales suck and that opinion wont change no matter what. Personally I see lots of amazing record lows (for indie games) and some disappointing sales (for major publishers like Activision) but that is the way Steam has worked for the past 3 years. Also we have to take into account that majority of us have free money from card sales so even if the deals arent great in some cases, the games are free!

I think another thing on top is that the steep sale culture was really inadvertently hurting indie developers who were quickly racing to the bottom and having to contend with the "i'll just wait for a sale" mentality, which isn't so much of a thing anymore.

On the whole if it makes thing more sustainable for smaller developers, plus having more types of games on steam and the refund system, and eliminating the need for checking the store every single day (seriously guys that was never fun stop pretending it was) I'll take lesser sales.

I've never refunded a steam game. Never needed to. except once when a game was broken and unplayable but It was only like 3.99 due to a sale. now I make sure I research a little to make sure it actually works.

But I also don't just buy games without finding out if I would be interested in them or not.

You absolutely should buy Paint it Back, it's one of the best games on steam, for reals.

judging by that list you gonna love it!

or are we not allowed to have that opinion? I don't understand why people feel the need to defend it. Some people don't find the sales as "good sales." Why defend against that perspective? it doesn't effect you

This I will agree with you on. I dont care really as it is consumer friendly, but I dont refund games because I know what games I want, have done research and can wait a week if I am worried there will be technical problems. Some people buy 50 games play them for 1-2 hours and then refund if they dont want like them that much. Personally I think that is kind of dumb but I dont blame them as Steam is essentially asking them to do this.

I'm eyeballing these;

Umihara Kawase Collection
Code of Princess
Streets of Rogue
Momodora
Divinity Dragon Commander
Cosmic Star Heroine
GIGA WRECKER
Men at War

All the deals are good until July 5th, right? So I still have time to change my mind on some things.

Yeah, all deals are good until the 5th.
Meanwhile, I can vouch for the bolded to be really good in their genres.

This. Dailies and flash sales were nothing more than "here's the actual sale as opposed to the semi-discounts we've been offering you outside of these 6 hours".

I'd much rather have the same price throughout the whole sale. It also helps against impulse purchases.

Bought QB, not happy with performance though. How long does a refund normally take (paid with steam wallet)?

I'm always amazed that puzzle developers haven't copied Nintendo's (Picross DS and Picross 3D) approach to additional content.
Just release a game with 30-50 puzzles and then add a 5-7 puzzle pack each week.
This keeps people playing your game, advertising it to their friends.
Much better than community workshop, which (like pretty much every user-created content) varies in quality a bit too much to be of great use... :\
Granted, even Nintendo themselves didn't follow this approach into 3DS games

Would I like Edith Finch if I didn't like Firewatch? Not opposed to 'walking sims' per se, but the explorative gameplay in Firewatch felt very rudimentary and more importantly the story also fell flat.

Games like Dying Light should be among the Deus Ex's and Thiefs of the world. How it basically hit rock bottom at $30 is confusing to me. Who the fuck is even buying or playing that game right now? I get games from Gamefly all of the time at $9.99 or less used and that includes games that are much newer than even Dying Light.

If it helps, it was very good! ...also I am pretty sure it was $30 at launch or something when I bought it, which is weird.

I thought the first half of Firewatch was pretty good, but the entire second half was irredeemable garbage. I absolutely loved Edith Finch.

The gameplay is very different (in a way that i really can't explain without straight up spoiling awesome surprises) and feels much more like a form of interactive storytelling than the fakexploration of firewatch

I definitely recommend it if you generally have no issue with walking sims, cos personally i think this is one of the best.
