Ars: Early tests show bizarre issues with Nintendo Switch voice chat app

Can't say that I'm surprised.

Honestly, you're better off downloading Discord and linking friends there lol

I have to imagine this app just wasn't ready but they needed something for Splatoon 2's launch.

For the time being I'm just going to use Discord until it allows you to use voice in sleep mode. That's just inexcusable. My non-XL Pixel's battery would get annihilated by keeping a screen on during a 2-3 hour session.

they needed something for Splatoon 2

If nothing else, this just sabotages Splatoon 2, even just a little bit. Especially if Nintendo have lofty eSports goals. Chat and communication need to have as little barriers as possible.

I don´t play online multiplayer and thus don´t chat online. I´m a nintendo fanboy. And even i can say that this whole thing is legit the most stupid thing nintendo has ever done. And i actually mean it. From voice chat thing being an app you have to use your phone for. The phone not being able to turn off the screen. Needing a thingy to combine your phone with your switch and then plug your headphones into the thingy. The fact that if you use your switch on you tv and sit a bit away on the couch the whole thing is basically useless. And you´ll have to pay actual money next year to use it.

I´m genuinely dumbfounded.

This is not a glitch, lol.

The fact that this app is limited to active game sessions makes it a non-starter for me. I will never use it for voice chat until that's changed.
I can't imagine someone (or a group of someones really) would have designed this as a feature. I mean, that's comically stupid.

Why do they even NEED the app for Splatoon 2 in the first place?? The app should be supplemental to the experience, not required for things like voice chat in the first place.

because Nintendo decided that having this functionality on an app instead of the Switch itself was a totally good idea

no seriously, that's what they did

the Splatoon fanbase will likely continue using discord like usual

Nintendo are such a confusing company. So switched on at some things but utterly clueless when it comes to things like online.

What's evident is there's no secret sauce to this. Even if it worked as intended it'd still be a completely crappy basically worthless solution. I just can't understand why you'd blow the time and effort into creating such an obviously poor solution rather than invest that time in at the very least matching the expected behavior of modern systems.

Wait what the hell? I was cautiously optimistic about this whole app thing, adopting a "let's wait and see how it turns out" approach as opposed to foaming rage like many others did from the outset. HOWEVER.... This is ridiculous. If, in 2017, your voice chat solution app requires the phone to stay on, meaning you need to disable auto sleep which every single person on the planet has turned on..... That is utterly, utterly mind blowing.

How did Nintendo not look at apps like Discord and follow their lead? Sadly, it's yet more evidence of a "head in the sand" approach to online. They've got some of the best bloody designers and teams in the industry but my god, they're so pig headed it's quite staggering.

Then you can shitpost again.

Dude we get it, you've been posting this multiple times in every Switch App related thread

And don't bother trying to use the app to chat with your Switch friends while away from the system, either: you can only join chat rooms with people when you're actively playing a specific, supported game with them.

This is an absolute joke. We should not even have to use our phones for online. If you're gonna force people to use this stupid method then at least make it work properly.

Nintendo gonna Nintendo, I suppose.

Glad to see more articles on this. The worst thing about this idiotic solution they've come up with is not being able to turn the screen off. As far as I know, the display is the biggest drainer of battery on mobile devices, and if you have a device with an OLED display, you risk getting burn-in with static elements on screen.

The app should have only been an option, not the only way to do this. The switch is more than capable of doing all this natively. This also should've been available at launch. Nintendo has had more than a decade to get this shit right.

I don't want to waste my time holding Nintendo's fucking hand anymore.

Everyone told them about this, Reggie heard from the whole press. You waste your own time giving feedback to the void if you want.

Nintendo had 10 years to catch up with their competitor and this is what they come up with. The app is actually worse than what people speculated when it was announced.

The whole voice chat from the phone app concept is completely useless from the get go. Discord already exists and does everything such a app could ever do.

This just makes it rather hilarious.

Nintendo's incompetence strikes again! Its truly mid boggling that Nintendo is as successful as they are when they make two incredibly stupid decisions for every one good one.

Tying your online communication to a separate device that's constantly getting notifications, texts, and phone calls wasn't a wise idea. And on top of that you can't let it go into sleep mode.

This definitely needs work before they expect people to pay for it. Good thing they're testing it out first.
