It's 2017 Nintendo, why you can't you do basic online

Not only did Nintendo amaze the gaming community with an incredibly elegant voice chat solution this week but they have also found another way to remind us they can't provide basic online functionality.

The Nintendo eshop has crashed and people are unable to download Splatoon 2 at release. Wouldn't be a problem if preload on the Switch was a thing, right? lol sure thing buddy.

Does Nintendo just not care about providing a functional online ecosystem for its fans? Do they figure people will buy their games anyway? There is no way that Nintendo management can think what we have right now is suitable so I am struggling to figure out why don't have something that at least reaches parity with Xbox Live when it was released in 2002.

It's been 15 years since MS showed us what a proper online infrastructure should be on a console. 15 years. 15. 1 👏 5 👏

I mean, we can't even download fucking splatoon 2 right now...

I hate nintendo's people in charge of internet/networking technology.

Hey guys, we have a really popular game coming. Maybe we should allow people to preload it, so there is less stress on the servers.

Nah, terrible idea!

I don't own a Switch yet but this is pretty crazy reading this. Demand for Splatoon 2 must be huge.

The entire E-Shop is down?

Literally logged on to GAF to see if I wasn't the only one who couldn't load the eShop. I'm not putting pants back on to go to Walmart.

i guess valve cant do it either since their servers always crash during steam sales

also 15? major game downloading for consoles didnt become a common thing until the late 2000s if not early 2010s and didnt become standard until the ps4/xbone were released

Nintendo hate the very concept of online. It is completely polarized to their "we're a toy company but not really" bullshit on the fence marketing strategy

Apparently, Paper Mario: Color Splash allowed people who preloaded to have the full game by September (game came out in October). I'm not surprised they shyed away from this system, though I wish it was back. Server stress is nothing new, though, somehow Nintendo is special for getting it wrong? I dunno, maybe I'm looking into it weird.

They have the money to invest in their online infrustructure and capabilities which makes the decisions even more maddening.

Maybe they will listen this time.

OP, you're wrong.

It is basic.

The problem here is that it's too basic.

Like, here, you can play online, with some very basic friend joining systems and no method of communication between users at all. (Don't even bring up the app, it's just not worth mentioning it.)

It is really fucking basic.

Nintendo's online divisions needs a major overhaul and a drastic change of mindset, they're releasing online focused games with barely anything to support communication between players.

I knew someone was gonna make this thread, as if there's never been a congested shop when a big game comes out. Preload woulda been nice, for sure, but y'all gotta chill.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Because their strength and focus is, and always will be local multiplayer.

The better their online is, the less people will play locally.

It's just not meant to be.

One of the reasons why I don't own a Switch yet. Give me a proper account system, basic 2017 internet functionalities and a proper Virtual Console.

Splatoon 2 got me to post this but my question remains. People are reacting to the Splatoon 2 reference and not addressing my question.

Why has Nintendo not bothered to provide even a rudimentary modern online infrastucture for its consumers? How does that decisiom benefit them in any way?

The Switch is a beta console. Released far too early with only the most barebones os functions, eshop, and online features.

just came here, to see if I am not the only one who can't connect to the eShop... nope.
They don't want my money?

It's a highly anticipated release on a successful console.
It'll likely get more features like pre load as things go on like any system and the eShop will be back soon enough

Yknow I expected the eshop to shit the bucket

But even their stupid support site they tell you to go to check error codes on doesn't work properly

Really? I mean really? Errors to check error codes? Ugh

When will it not be beta though? Because it doesn't look like Virtual Console or non-smartphone-app voice-chat/matchmaking will be a thing even by fall.

This really only seems to happen on their biggest titles. If it's not Splatoon, Pokemon, Mario or Zelda, eShop almost never goes down on launch days of new games.

One of the best excuses I read here was Nintendo was cautious about investing too much into the Switch OS because it might fail like the Wii U.

for all the shit the Wii U and 3DS got, online there was aight

had preload, no major problems with connectivity, UI was pretty weird on 3DS eShop but at least everything was neatly categorized, WIi U eShop did this better

but they decided to go back to square one on the Switch. stranger shit has happened

They should do it right. That is no excuse to eliminate a feature.

Honestly I just think it's Nintendo's general Japanese-ness. To my understanding online gaming never became a big priority on consoles in Japan, and the domestic market has always been a primary concern of Nintendo. Remember when that report came out that said Nintendo had asked third party developers to stop making references to XBL and PSN because the people working on Nintendo's online service had never used XBL or PSN? Sony in contrast this gen (and really starting last gen) has really allowed PlayStation to turn into an increasingly western operation.

I actually think Nintendo, or people up there at Nintendo, still like to prioritize local multiplayer over online because that's somehow a more "native" fit for consoles. And again that would make sense in a country with Japan's population density. I think the friend code bullshit was just because Nintendo originally wanted to avoid the toxidity Xbox Live was known for at the time which makes sense for its family-friendly platform, but executed it in a baffling way. Voice chat seems like it was an afterthought, and maybe that's just another Japanese thing.

I assume the game servers will die at some point due to strain as well. Hopefully they did a bunch of stress testing during the betas.

OK

Nintendo needs to step it up in regards to pretty much everything about their treatment of online services. Especially if they want more than their hardcore audience.

You're right, it's probably just a feature they haven't put into it yet because they rushed the online. Still, The idea that game launches crashing the store is nothing new in the gaming business, and Nintendo is not the lone offender of this. It sucks, but it's not "Iwata's greatest failing" sucks.
