John McCain to return to the United States Senate Tomorrow for Healthcare Vote

I wonder if this is a sign that Republicans have agreed behind closed doors to pass the health care bill? Otherwise not sure they would rush him back like this.
There are two nos that the GOP has given up on trying to convince. Without McCain they couldn't even attempt a vote. Now they just need to sway 100% of Republicans not named Collins or Murkowski, just to tie the vote and have Pence break it (which he would)

God it's so fucking terrifying.

Even if they pass the motion to debate, I can't imagine they will pass the bill if it's basically just a copy and paste of the previous bill.

If Obamacare is repealed can we agree that PoliGAF is disgraced forever?

Brexit, Hillary, how many times can you be so wrong after acting like you're so right?

Its a play by McConnell to bring out a dying man to...convince others that people should die? Or something?

When he votes to repeal I never want to hear a goddamn word about him being a hero ever again. That single vote holds more sway over a persons supposed moral composure then his entire history does. If this was a Charles Dickens novel he'd see 20,000,000 ghosts and go "eh."

Isn't this what happened with the house vote as well? They apparently couldn't get votes together, liberals proclaim victory and celebrate only to have it passed next week.

Fuck McCain. Piece of shit.

You sound like dumbass Trump with his "Fake News" bullshit. Just because we underestimate how evil the GOP is or how stupid the people of this country are doesn't mean what we say is wrong or loses value. I'm disgraced for the idiots that think any of these things are good somehow.

This thing just won't go away will it? Would love to be able to go to bed without having to worry what my health coverage might look like in the morning bleh!

Holy hell people. I'm not a fan of the guy either but fuck..

It's not a sentiment I share, but his vote could ruin the lives of millions. Are you really that surprised? It's even worse for him, because he now understands the need for health insurance, he simply doesn't care, or doesn't believe people should be entitled to it. He probably thinks he's earned it, or some bullshit.

That's...a lot worse.

He's just had surgery for a brain tumor. You're really not supposed to fly after a procedure like that because of the cabin pressure. I know it's grim but it's more likely than him voting like a decent human being.

I just don't get the play of all this, really. Say they manage to pass this, okay, then it goes to debate and they rewrite the ACHA to the BCRA as it was before when it didn't have the votes by like 5-7 votes.

And then...what? What's the play? Is the idea that they can amend it to finally getting something workable for everyone, or is it like a mental thing of, 'Well, we came this far, might as well go all the way!'

Or have they altered the bill to the point where they think they can ram it through maybe?

This thing is not going away until they either succeed or January 2021 (at the earliest) rolls around, whichever comes first.

Would you enjoy it more if repeal dies for good or if it eventually passes?

Don't answer right away. Take your time to think it over.

No, as explained many times in this thread, this is something entirely different.

Holy hell people. I'm not a fan of the guy either but fuck..

Yeah, come on guys. He's only literally dragging his ass out of his deathbed to do his part to doom millions of the nation's most vulnerable to actual death and/or financial ruin. That's no reason to be mean.

Edit: You all realize he isn't Tinkerbell, right? Thinking bad thoughts about this man (doing an objectively evil thing) doesn't affect his prognosis one way or the other.

Hard to believe I fell for the bullshit that McCain had integrity.

Even if you truly believe in the most pure-free-market healthcare system possible, passing a bill like this breaks with every democratic norm. It's disgusting. No debate. No amendments from the opposition. Hide from the public as much as possible. Attack the CBO for doing it's best job at evaluating things. No town halls. Even if McCain wants the exact end point of the bill doing it like this is a travesty for democracy.

What a sucker I was for believing that stuff about McCain.

It's funny though

He just got medical service

You would think he would see the err of his ways, seeing how emergency service can help someone, and you would think he would grow a conscious and think 'Boy I think people should have medicare'.

But no. He won't. He just got emergency medical service and he's about to vote to take it away from people.

Funny how life works.

McCain's situation makes me realize that what most people really don't like about Trump is that he's a rude blowhard. The reason he is bringing down the integrity of the office is that he doesn't act like a President, not that his policies are actively kneecapping the limited time we have as the hegemonic state for instant personal gain.

As long as McCain can project that thin layer of politeness and go about the most horrific things through paperwork and bureaucracy without constantly and loudly shitting his pants on Twitter, then that will be acceptable to most people. When Trump does it, it is visible and ridiculous.

When Trump goes down, the real underlying problem - the GOP - won't go down with him, because it will be too easy to distance themselves from Trump's attitude by being polite and people will buy that wholesale, distancing the loud and ridiculous GOP members from the polite ones, when their goals are one and the same. They will distance themselves from his loud mouth, but not the policies. The policies are the part that is all them

If John McCain is still going to try and take our health care away after we paid to treat his brain cancer he can just fuck off forever.

This is all well and good but no version of this bill is polling higher than like 24%

Lmao he really is going to use one of his last big votes to fuck over millions. Maybe that brain tumor is what destroyed his spine years ago

No, it really doesn't. You still should have to answer to your voters. There should (theoretically) be a fear that you'll get fucked next election or impeached or affected in some way. That's democracy. The republicans have insulated themselves from some of these effects with gerrymandering, but there should be more there. Democracy doesn't give you power to do whatever the hell you want and it never has. They should stick close to the will of the voter or feel the heat.

I'm not arguing that they should have to listen to their constituents, but the reality is they don't have to. The people want Obamacare, yet here we are again, for the SIXTH TIME.

If they cared they would just drop this and move along, but again they don't have to. And that is why they don't drop it, they do not care what you want because they have the power and we don't.

Doesn't matter. Once the GOP passes it anyway, most Republicans will twist themselves in knots to convince themselves that it's great.

They haven't so far. Fox News polled viewers and 74% said they either preferred the ACA be left alone or for the GOP to reach across the isle to improve it or make a new improved bill. 74%. Of Fox News viewers.

Like I said, check again after it passes. Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.

Hell, just look at their attitude toward Trump. No one falls in line quite like Republicans.

That's just in the movies.

In real life, McCain made a deal with every devil he could find to take his shot at the Presidency, and even though it failed the stains would never wash off. He left the campaign trail bitter and broken, but too deeply compromised as a man to ever regain even a modicum of dignity. You can't whore yourself out that hard and rediscover your honor in the eleventh hour.

In real life, Scrooge dies miserly, old, and hated, having never seen the error of his ways because he's too bitter to care what anyone else thinks.
