Grixis Wizards is cool, because I was working on a cube with a tribal component, but was having trouble choosing a blue tribe. Hopefully there's enough new support cards to make Wizards viable.

It seems that all the masterpieces from Kaladesh are spiking hard right now.

I am not too into speculating but I saw people selling some stuff on the high end group for a lot more than I thought they were going for.

I guess the low print run and the quality (in terms of what they printed) really makes them desirable. I only have a few of them but they do look sweet. It is a shape that the invocations were so shit in comparison.

the cat commander is bad, dragon EDH decks are boring and same-y, vampires are so vanilla - guess the wizard deck is the only one that interests me. Sultai would be better, though. Druids are just green wizards, if you really think about it

I guess Bolas is more Dragon than wizard, but he would be the obvious one to come to mind. Of the three classic DND archetypes, I definitely think of him as more a wizard than a rogue or fighter.

Fake edit: realized after typing all that you probably meant characters from the backstory to actually use as legends for the product similar to the other decks. Yeah, I can't think of any either.

Black is kind of weird here; I would have rather it had been Jeskai over Grixis. That said, I can think of a few iconic black non legendary wizards- Shadowmage Infiltrator, Dark Confidant, (not really edh suitable) Havengul Lich, Lich Lord of Unx, (not really iconic but makes wizard tokens!)

Speaking of Jeskai I would like wizards to revisit wedges eventually with the proper centering.

Mostly because I consider Green based RUG the most boring shit ever. Wow spells that care about big beaters, naya already did that theme.

The popularity of Khans does make that highly unlikely sadly.

Alright, stuff they could use from the wiki:

The Numena- a group of mages representing every color. The blue, black, and red(!) ones explicitly killed the green and white ones, leaving only 3. (Who would ultimately all be killed by Karona later)
Mairsil- Power hungry wizard and artificer who puts his soul into a ring and uses it to possess people. Not a ton of red in the description, but I think they could swing it.
Nailah- Teysir's lover/opponent. Teysir himself merged in such a way that a Grixis version wouldn't be possible lore wise, and the full 5 color Teysir is too powerful for a card. Nailah, however, demonstrates several Grixis qualities.
Jodah- You could probably make a case for a Grixis Jodah somewhere in the timeline(s), but it wouldn't be a definitive presentation, though. I think of Jodah as traditionally more heroic than Grixis, but he does go mad for a few periods.

Well, apparently a japanese magazine just leaked the last tribal:

GW cats, Mardu vampires, 5C dragons, Grixis wizards.

For some reason I feel like GW cats will be the weakest. My heart says that 5C dragons will be the strongest. But Mardu vampires and Grixis wizards could come out of nowhere and be super strong.

I feel bothered that there isn't a UG deck just to round out color distribution. Elves (though this basically already had a Commander deck), Merfolk, Snake/Nagas could have all fit that niche.

Merfolk is the best supported Blue tribe (and it will get more support in Ixalan). You can throw in a few strong faeries and zombies depending on how tribal the Cube will be.

I'm trying to think of wizard characters that fit Grixis and drawing a blank.

Printing good Red & Black support cards will the the challenge (and largest contribution) this deck could give to the archetype.

Tribal is just a subtheme. The important thing is that the tribal stuff overlaps with the non-tribal stuff to ensure that the pick decisions are interesting.

Oooh this is a great pick. Definitely could sell as Grixis.

There's a canon thing about Jodah not knowing black magic is the blocker here.

I am interested in Commander spoilers. I'll probably end up picking up all of the decks; I don't really have a burning need for the Cats, but if I'm in for the other three I might as well make it an anthology.

I'd assume (dangerously) that Jodah would just be in Dominaria. The Numena or Mairsil would be boss tho. Mairsil could even bring his ring to play. The Numena and Sash and Waistcoat are some of the more significant story characters to not get any card representation at all.

Agreed on both counts. If they want to do some known characters who can still be expected to be alive on Dominaria (and it'll be dumb as fuck if they don't), the list is something like: Jodah, Teferi, Jhoira, Squee....

Sash and Waistcoat really need to get done as a single pair-off card. WTF creature types do you give them though?

Nightmare? Minion?

If the Wizard deck is interesting, I might come back to the game.

But I don't have an Underground Sea for the deck though zzz

Depends on which art of their arc they depict I guess. If their art isn't a renaissance painting of them stabbing Karona with Kamahl looking on in the background, then I'm not sure what it would be.

Just catching up on Commander leaks. Grixis wizards sounds interesting. Biggest problem I have is that mono-U already has the ultimate wizard commander:

I mean, it's really hard to beat her in terms of tribal value. Whatever they add better be pretty fucking good. Two more colors is a good start, but Grixis commanders are a dime a dozen.

Well, we can reasonably guess it's going to have an Eminence effect, though from the two Eminence effects that have been spoiled there's no clear restriction on what that may be other than it cares about Wizards creature type.

I suppose it could technically just be, "Whenever a Wizard you control deals combat damage to a player, draw a card" or something. Having that active from the Command Zone on a commander that does other things would be a tempting replacement.

They would limit it to combat damage, which is too bad. I'd prefer the Prodigal Sorcerer effect draws cards damn it!

So what are the best cards in standard right now to fight mono red? My store was about 30% mono red last fnm and the recent tourney results will likely increase that.

I play Grixis control so my options are pretty much limited to Kalitas (2 already in the mb), Gifted Aetherborn, and Essence Extraction. Should I replace Sweltering Suns with Kozilek's Return to catch all the haste creatures?

In all colors, Authority of the Consuls is probably the best card. In Grixis, probably Kozilek's Return and Grasp of Dakrness for Hazoret.

yay! It looks like Seth is doing Hapatra for budget magic. I wonder how close my list will end up being to his. Been going back and forth on it for a few weeks and was wondering if I should just shelve it.

everyone and their mother plays Kalitas now if they can run him. It was weird that he wasn't in that many decks before RDW was a thing

Essence Extraction is still not really good, Kozileks Return is much better against RDW and quite a bit worse against zombies - and really wants that second Eldarzi activation trigger. Grasp is useful as always. Gifted Aetherborn if you're really struggling with the matchup. BB cards in a 3c deck is a bit questionable, though. Aethersphere Harvester is one of the best sources of life gain. Push and Magma Spray

Can't stress enough how bad shard mana is for decks that want to hit a 6th untapped land on turn 6 consistently and never stumble on early interaction.
Wedge mana is way better but then jeskai is red centered and you want to be blue centered.

This makes me want to play Temur if anything as control. Maybe this card is the RDW breaker

Whriler Virtuoso doesn't seem that bad against Red I guess. You can always make thopters after can't block triggers resolve.
