The cat deck seems a whole lot more interesting than the dragon one so far.

it's a dragons EDH deck. They're always really boring but effective, got a wide range of the best cards of any tribe, and all decks look exactly the same

I love the art and flavor of Fortunate Few

The thing about Dragon Tribal is in 5C you get to play any of the 10 Dragonlord cards you want, Prosh, Scion, the Regents, the Tyrants, the Scalelords, the Elder Dragons, the Hellkites, etc., etc., etc.

In terms of new cards you should expect to see more enablers than anything else for the dragons deck, because they aren't really going to be able to print many new dragon creature cards that are legit going to be able to find a spot in a deck that's already having to cut like 220+ cards for not being good enough.

Vampires will have a similar issue, though not to the same extreme, because there's a shit-ton of crazy vampire cards already in the wild.

I am very excited to play a Ramos deck. Being able to cast Conflux and search up Time Stretch, Rise of the Dark Realms, Insurrection, two 5-color cards, and then immediately cast the Time Stretch on the same turn sounds like magic

New cards. The effect on the mirror seems cheap enough to be breakable.

I guess this is their way of getting around an aura shards reprint

Her abilities are kinda boring but I'm pretty interested in where she's from. Definitely looks Roman inspired. I guess that's why they kept emphasizing that Theros is specifically Greek mythology and only has bits of Rome in it.

That is a real useless commander.

Also fuck them for leaving the wizard deck spoilers for last, argghhh

Edgar's the actual deck commander, this is just a secondary potential commander for specific styles of play, like Meowdragosa and new Mirri.

As for leaving Wizards for last... you know what, I'm going to agree to the extent that leading off with the tribes that were already spoiled probably wasn't a brilliant play, though at least they didn't go Day 1 Dragons (which had been spoiled much more heavily than Cats).

all the other commander decks are races only wizards are a class.

Wizards never where on the level of tribal support that soldiers got for instance before the dawn of race and class division.

Wizards are kind of a junk "tribe". They don't even really have a tribal identity other than having generally low Power/Toughness, and there's plenty of better-defined tribes that operate in that wheelhouse (Goblins, Merfolk, etc.).

I associate Wizards with countering spells or drawing cards, for better or worse. Not sure those are identities though.

Wizards and Soliders were the main tribes of White and Blue in Onslaught, both equally supported (Illusions and Clercs were their secondary tribes).

The funny thing about Wizards is their tribal definition is probably actually weaker than Zombie Wizards (ie, Liches) or just the general "Izzet" tribal identity.

Now, they can (and hopefully have) actually create a definition for them here and now with this deck, but honestly I'm still giving it even odds that it's just a grab-bag of random-ass wizards in a mostly instants/sorceries driven card engine.

I find Wizards a weird choice only because they're so strongly mono-blue to me. Like, Vampires bleed into white/red, sure. Cats in green is a bit unusual but not unprecedented. And five-color Dragons is practically a cliche at this point.

But Grixis Wizards? Weird. I associate black more with Clerics and red more with Shamans. They have Wizards obviously but they never seemed particularly wizard-y to me.

wizards got Glen Elendra Archmage

wizards are objectively the best tribe

Glen Elendra Archmage is not going to be in that pre-con deck

Clerics were BW

did wizards get one of these?

no, didn't think so because Illusions took precedence over Wizards.

I think the bigger problem there is that it would be severely out of flavor for there to be a wizard who is also a 'warchief.' Wizards are naturally frail and bookish types.

As a counterpoint, Wizards got their own utility land in Onslaught Block in Riptide Laboratory. Illusions.... did not.

I'm not even sure what you're arguing anymore lol

Anyway, I hope Patron Wizard and Voidmage Prodigy are included in the deck, even if their costs are hefty for 3 coloured deck.

Definitely didn't expect to see Phasing in 2017. Would be cool to see more weird mechanics pop up in Commander/Conspiracy like that, as one-offs.

If Phasing can come back, that means Banding can come back

I'm going to say a prayer so that one day, we can get "bands with others" back as well

Did Illusions get one of these cards in the cycle?

no, because Wizards took precedence over Illusions.

I mean, we can do this all day.

There may be enough curses to revisit the idea of a curse-engine deck. I mean, it worked before, aside from the fact that it really just doomed you and one other player with you. Now, maybe I can doom myself and two other players!

I'm calling your argument in question because just comparing elves and beasts in onslaught block there's an equal amount of cards in green caring for beasts as there is for evles.

Blue was sharing Wizards with Illusions and Birds so there are a bit less card support for it, but it was obviously one of the main supported tribes for the block, I don't even know how you can argue against that?

Wizards got an Avatar, a charm, a courier, a tap-five-creatures lord, a tribal land, a gempalm, an invoker. They got a piece in almost every cycle of the block.

Isn't this mechanic taken directly from Ixalan? The gold coins that sac for mana?

No, it's from Theros. Ixalan has treasure tokens that are the same but you have to tap and sac to add mana.

And finally an interesting Mardu commander!

That's a hell of a card. I'm trying to figure out if it's actually good though.

It's cheap enough to combo with board wipes to make them one sided.

Especially Armageddon, or the recent one that gets all nonlands and has the cost reduction rider.

Edit: Talking about Teferi's Protection

They even got a Pit Fighter Legend, where most of them were non-supported tribes (Gorgon, Dragon, Elemental)

Yo what happens if someone ultimates a Karn while you're out via Teferi's Protection.

I know it's likely as boring as "you also restart the game". But how awesome would it be if you just phased back in, unscathed.

714.2. All Magic cards involved in the game that was restarted when it ended, including phased-out permanents and nontraditional Magic cards, are involved in the new game, even if those cards were not originally involved in the restarted game. Ownership of cards in the new game doesn’t change, regardless of their location when the new game begins. #

Example: A player casts Living Wish, bringing a creature card into the game from outside the game. Then that game is restarted. The creature card will be part of that player’s library when the new game begins.
