Ys SEVEN PC |OT| Trails in the Flash Guard

So how do you do this "flash guard" everyone talks about? The game didn't come with a manual, and the PSP control of "Hold R and hit L" doesn't seem to work.

EDIT: NM, it's R2 and L2, I was doing L1/R1

Hit both "Guard Trigger" binds simultaneously to activate it. Bear in mind the frame delay between successive Flash Guards. You can spam the command for long attacks once you've successfully used Guard on a frame already.

After playing with controller for a while, I played a bit around with KB/M controls and ended up with this, which imho plays better than controller for me : )
Especially guarding < 3

Ideally I'd have 2 skills on mouse 4 & 5 and the other 2 on Shift + Mouse 4 & 5, but that's not possible without external tools, I guess.

That wraps up the first boss.
Ah, that sweet smell of Ys bosses on Nightmare, how I've missed thee.
Flash Guard is such a live saver and it feels soooo satisfying.

Having a blast so far.

Bought and installed - about to launch for the first time. I'm using an xbox 360 controller and the names of the button assignments are very generic and confusing. It seems like no matter what, there are going to be buttons that are mapped to more than 1 function. But, some of these may be "menu" things and others may be for gameplay/battle but I have no idea. Anyone know which ones of these are menu keys? I'm going to try what I have setup but no idea if it's going to work or not!

What a disappointing port. No high resolution support, poor AA options, no additional effects like ambient occlusion and every 2D element is horribly filtered by a computer program. Very lame. It's many steps back from Trails of Cold Steel.

Nothing's going to compare to Cold Steel PC this year in terms of customization and options added. Beyond that, can we set non-preset resolutions via the config file? The game should hook to Reshade just fine, too, and won't look so much better with lots of gaudy features which can't mask how it's a PSP game. I wouldn't mind having extra graphics settings to mess with just in case I like them, but I get that it would have been extra work for both XSEED and Hyde with diminishing returns.

Right off the bat the intro fmv seems to be playing back at half-speed compared to the audio which runs fine. That's worrying, but can be ignored since it'll just play that first time.

Sounds like a psp port to me. The only thing they really promised was 60fps and higer-res art assets for dialogue boxes and menus. Hell, they didn't even need to add Dual Shock button prompts but it's right there in the options if you want to swap. Not that I'm excusing anything, I've only just started. Need to see how well my comp can handle it.

The ambient sounds in this are way, way too loud. Like the sound of the waves and the ships in the intro, and the seagulls at the harbor, etc. And these are not affected by the SFX slider. I really hope there's some way to reduce the volume on those, even if I have to edit the files...

Just noticed the Dual Shock prompts on the Equip menu for skills doesn't match the actual buttons used: if you place a skill on 'L2 + X' you have to actually press O to use it.

Man, after playing two Trails games just a few months apart from each other, it feels soooo good to go back to Ys! I love Trails more overall but the faster gameplay of Ys is just so much fun. I haven't played one since Napishtim came out on Steam, so it's been a little while.

how is the port overall?

I'm only in the first town still and my rig is a good 6+ years old but I can run the game @ 1080p/60fps w/ most settings on high (left Bloom on Med, fuck that shit) and no frame drops so far, runs pretty smooth. Really need to get into the actual battles and a full 3-party team to see if that holds.

This was my first Ys game when I finished it on Vita years ago. Really enjoyed my time with it. And while I probably won't pick this up to play again, I love that I'm just as hyped for Ys VIII as any of the "AAA" games coming out.

I remember playing this on Hard and only know about Flash Guard until the 2-3 bosses away from the last boss.

Apparently the game never tell you about Flash Guard, you'll only find it out from the PSP manual lol.

I play the whole game on hard without knowing I can flash guard. Yeah, so I rolled a lot.

I don't get it either. There's probably a way to hack a solution in unofficially, but this wouldn't be difficult for the port team to implement once they get feedback.
I've heard that you can just input whatever resolution in the config file.
But I think I've heard it might break something? The devs plan on looking into it.
Finally had time to play. I still like how Flash Guard-ing the first boss can be risky, more than rolling at points. Level 3 on Hard does it in.
Took me Level 5 on Nightmare.
But I was also still getting accustomed to the controls and feel of the gameplay.

That first boss has 7 different attacks, I don't remember how the other first Ys bosses fare in that regard, but that took me by surprise, because that's quite a lot.

Seven definitely has my favorite opening boss just because of its attack patterns, Rush move, and how you need to finally learn the first EXTRA skill to kill it.

can't escape

Forgot what a pain in the ass the first boss was. My flash guard timing is awful, so I had to stick with dodge rolling for fun and profit. I also forgot you could access recovery items even in battle.

Ha, I immediately had the same thought.

Flash Guard is bliss on Mouse/Keyboard.
LMB: Attack
RMB: Dodge
Space: Guard

Profit.

Thanks for the suggestion Ascheroth. Binding the guard triggers to just LB makes a world of difference now...I'm glad to know how you're supposed to do it, but timing's more important than grip and this works much more convenient.

Good to know that you can do that with a controller as well. The default bindings with both triggers is super clunky (especially considering my controllers trigger buttons are getting loose, which was why I decided to try KB/M to begin with, haha)

Maybe we should put this piece of information into the OP :)

Enjoying this quite a bit. Glad I read here about guarding and that it can be assigned to one button. Guarding was essential for the second boss on nightmare. I like how guarding also lets you do more damage and seems to let you temporarily ignore damage types. It's a little strange not being able to jump though. I like that Dogi is a bigger part of the adventuring in 7, but I think I would've preferred just sticking to playing Adol, even if others tag along and help. The damage types system so far just feels tacked on to make you swap characters when there could have been better ways to encourage that which don't feel restrictive.

So I'm at the point in the game where I have more then 3 party members. Do the non active people still get XP?

Non-active fighters get most of the EXP your active members already receive. This prevents neglected members from getting behind in levels so long as you vary your parties.

Just found out the hard way that some quests are time sensitive/missable. FFS, Falcom, why do you keep doing this? The fuck is wrong with you? Ugh...

Wait, really? That's a dealbreaker for me.

No resolution above 1080p is supported, unless you hex-edit the Ys7.exe file. It's probably a launcher bug, because all other PC releases from XSeed can run up to 2160p.

Also, MSAA doesn't work at all. I tried forcing 8xSGSSAA with a few compatibility bits in Nvidia Inspector and only the Steam overlay is affected.

That is not something I wanna hear :/
Alternatively, just skip them. Nearly all are questionable uses of time, and I only ever bothered with Michael's Titano quests before visiting Ruins Island (which is the cut-off point for the first set of quests).

Falcom's never gonna stop putting missables into their games, though, since it's their way of encouraging replays with or without other incentives (like new difficulties and features).

Sounds good! Also, there doesn't seem to be an achievement for doing all quests.

This wasn't done by their normal person, this was done by the team who ported Gurumin which wasn't a great port either.

Started playing this and just beat the first boss. Loving the music and the story-telling. The cutscenes are well done, and the character portraits are gorgeous! I await the day when games will look like these character portraits (we have NNK2, but we need more).

The combat seems okay I guess (I don't hate it); it's a bit too mashy for my liking and I would have preferred if each hit had more importance and follow through. I do love that the skills are mapped to shortcut buttons, and I also love how fast and quick the dodge is. I didn't use flash guard (game doesn't tell you about it, and only after reading this thread I'm realising it is something I need to be aware of).

Overall, it seems like a fine game so far. Looking forward to playing more.

I don't remember HYDE Inc. being responsible for work on Gurumin's Steam/GOG releases, and they apparently didn't do much other than publish/support the Japanese release of Gurumin 3DS. Anyway, it's a good port but the lack of feature parity is something to address if they work with XSEED on another Falcom PSP port.

Compared to most of the previous Ys games, combat seems fairly clunky so far. I'm getting used to it, but Oath in Felghana or Origin this isn't. I feel so slow moving around most of the time.

Check your rolling pattern. I felt rather slow until I got into the habit of timing rolls to dash around areas non-stop, and 60 FPS makes this easier than before. Unlike in some 3D Zelda games where this doesn't chop off much of your travel time, Seven and Celceta (and I presume VIII) have great uses for rolling.

Lmao, for some reason I just assumed there would be one. Not a huge deal either way since I'd eventually have to replay on nightmare regardless but that makes it a bit less annoying.

You know, you gotta wonder how after travelling to 7 different lands, being declared the chosen one of prophecy 7 times and having fought and defeated 7 different ultimate evil elder gods...

How the fuck is Adol Christin not the most famous motherfucker on the planet? I realize it's a medieval era planet and they don't have the internet to easily spread the word, but god damn, dude should be idolized the world over by now.

Roll chaining is a lot of fun.
Just be careful and save often.

He's pretty damn well-known in Romn already.

Well it is already established that accounts of his adventures will go on to singlehandedly inspire the age of exploration.
