Nike Announces NBA "Smart" Jerseys

In taking over the NBA apparel deal, Nike announced on Friday that scanning the jersey's "jock tag" with a phone will offer the most recent highlights of that specific player and his team. Doing it on game day will unlock offers specific to that player or team, including limited shoe releases.

The new system, called NikeConnect, is part of both the Swingman jersey and the authentic jerseys that will be available for fans to purchase for $110 and $200, respectively, on Sept. 29.

In order to connect, fans with an iPhone 7 and Android device with NFC capability have to download the app and connect it to a NikePlus account, which identifies who they are. Fans can then scan in at any time. The app counts down until the team's next tipoff, updates that specific player's stats within a game if it's in progress and refreshes new highlights 30 minutes after a game's end.

Fans who bought a specific player's jersey will also find that when they scan in, they have a "boost" code that makes that player better when they play the NBA2K18 video game.

The connect idea gives Nike more information than they've ever had before on any product. They will now know who bought what player's jersey, where they live and where they scan in from.

I hope I can find Nike jerseys without this crap. I've been looking forward to getting a Nike Jersey of a specific player and would be extremely disappointed if this is in all Nike Jerseys.

Folks should learn to grow resistant to the idea of casually handing over tons of personally identifiable data to large corporations in the wake of the Equifax leak instead of shrugging their shoulders like it's nbd.

While I see your point, in this case can't you just not connect/register your jersey?

I just want to be able to scan my Antoine Walker Nike jersey, in hope that it will buy him a sandwich.

This is so fucking bizarre.

Some dude certainly got a huge fucking raise for having the idea, too.

You gave a shit enough to post in this thread apparently. But I think it does matter where now you're handing over personal data and being tracked by organizations/corporations just for buying a jersey.

No, I mean in the practicality of this. This could have been done entirely with a removable tag along with the retail price.

Tracking ability aside, who would be going through the motions to actually use this regularly?

Probably some intern blurted it out in hopes to leave for early lunch.

I actually thought this was going to be about what the players wore when entering the thread. Like keeping tabs of their stats visible on their jersey.

If the tag and scanner bar on the jersey can be removed, that would be ideal.

Lot of young adults/teens who are obsessed with certain players (which in the sports world, there are a lot of) would probably be all over this.

I can see BBB getting in on this with the Lonzo Ball Jerseys giving you discounts on the shoes/BBB Merchandise.

The headline made me legit think they'd found a way to integrate flexible oled displays into the jerseys so that the sponsor logos could be rotated in sync with the announcer table ads.

But if you don't have a phone, or don't download the app, or don't register the jersey, I'm not sure what the harm is.

The fact that the scanner bar exists on your jersey regardless of not "activating" it, as well as the potential amount of people who are not fully aware of what these Jerseys actually do, there is a lot of harm that can be done.

This is also just the start of it. The implications of how far they can really go with this could be massive if this thing takes off.

I can't wait until the point where you go to buy the jersey online or at checkout and they force you to register the jersey. I feel like that is the future we're heading for. If you give up your data willingly, great. If not, they'll find a way to get it.

Adidas applied a similar feature to their Adizero NHL jerseys, minus purchaser profiles.

Scanning the Adidas tag near the hem of the jersey brings up team content.

I'm still failing to see the harm here.

The majority of people buying the product probably are going to have no clue about this feature. Then for some people in between that might just go through the motions, they are doing it for allegiance or video game purposes.

I'm not sure the guy at the flea market is going to have that kind of power over me. Unless he lures me into the van...

Which is what Nike is counting on. Something that a trained clerk at a NBA Store will hype up when people come up and purchase those jerseys.

Seems pretty innocuous unless owning the jersey is the only way you can get those limited release products on game day, which might be the case.

Stopped wearing clothing from Nike, Adidas, Reebok, etc. in like college. They're tacky brands to wear if you're not a teenager or a hip-hop singer.

Based on? I feel like anyone, despite their age has some kind of athletic gear if they're remotely into being active.

Where are you living that no one wears sports jerseys?

This does bother me a bit, I used to be of the "well everything is out there anyway and there's nothing we can do about it" mentality, but lately my attitudes have been changing.

This got me thinking about some dystopian future where we don't buy clothes, we get a license for them (a jersey would only be $20!*). Featuring DRM that only allows the person with a license to wear the clothing. Put on a jersey you didn't buy originally, or a shirt whose license is one day expired? You're about to get a horrible, horrible rash. Make sure you use a compatible soap (i.e. the one we make) to ensure proper functionality.

Clothing as a service, marketed under the guise of theft prevention, convenience (change out player names whenever you want!) and "giving you the choice"!

*$20 plus $9.95 monthly usage fee

Hyperbole, but fuck man, they've done it with everything else.

As long as Reynolds Wrap stays one of the good ones.

I'm a little skeptical that even just having this feature on the Jerseys will make it feel more and more like Big Brother.

No one cares about Big Brother stuff anymore. People have personal tracking devices on them at all times--smartphones.

Not discounting the concern, but that concern is not a mass market one anymore, save for some very tech savvy privacy advocates, who are a minutea of the population.

If you are 30+ wearing jerseys you are uncle Rico still trying to throw a football over that mountain status.
