SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

Yup. I remember enjoying the 3 Star Wars games back then, and then trying them a few years ago and thinking to myself "wow, these games are really not good".

I never thought they were particularly impressive even back in the day honestly. Indiana jones greatest adventures seems to do the same things those 3 star wars games try to do but puts it in a package that does it successfully and is actually fun, imo

I don't understand the process for putting Retroarch on it. I went through OP's directions, but when I try to put Retroarch on, it pops up with that screen telling me to do the reset button and all that, and/or install the driver. Should I be installing Retroarch from its original kernel, or the custom kernel?

That pop up is normal. Just go with it.

Let's start from the beginning, did you unzip the contents of the retroarch folder into the user_mods folder within the hakchi folder?

Once that's done, have you opened hakchi and went to modules->install extra modules at the top of the menu bar? Did you click the ones you want to install? (For testing purposes, just check snes9x and retroarch for right now.)

After you did this, did you turn off the SNES mini, wait a sec, hold reset, turn it on, wait a sec, then release reset? Once you do that, retroarch should be on there, now you just have to set specific games with --retroarch command line argument at the end of the line and sync your games for it to take effect.

I notice the file in your collection differs from the instructions. I followed them and entered down to line 2. Could that have caused the brick? In which case now I should try again with the proper file.

Should look like this.

Not sure if this is a good place to ask this, but here goes.

Does anyone know of a decent english translation patch for Bahamut Lagoon? I've used the one located here and I find the translation to be lacking in some areas.

Is it possible to have the SNES Mini core + a Neo Geo and Super GameBoy retroarch core?

Or is it one or the other?
Haven't really dived in yet, but I like the native emulation a lot so far.

If I wanted to play FE4 on this thing, should I apply the English translation patch first and then the NTSC patch? Are they compatible?

Edit: Nevermind just checked the compatability doc and project Naga doesn't load

If you don't add --retroarch to the end of your SNES games, they will always use the SNES Mini's own emulator.

Yeah you need retroarch to run the Project Naga patch. Got it working last night, it's a shame it doesn't work natively but the bright side is that at least it isn't impossible.

Has anyone hacked a super famicom mini to add the English version of the games? Is it the same process as the snes classic?

This will happen if you have a corrupt box art image anywhere. Happened to me with Earthbound. Could not get the image to dump properly when I was shrinking thumbnails to fit more games. Once I replaced it then the GUI went back to full speed. Look for images that don’t show up and have a zigzag instead.

Ah, that’ll be it - there’s a couple that have that. Thanks!

If anyone can help, I can't find decent, non-washed out box art for DKC3 - I can't check those galleries some of you have linked because imgur is blocked on the only Windows-capable computer I have access to.

So it sounds like I should not bother putting my SW games on? Nor Indiana Jones?

I had a look at the github page for retroarch SNES Mini, it looks pretty easy to set up so I might give that a go. Just need to install retroarch then stick a command line argument on the patched game afterward? Reckon I should do an NTSC patch as well? I guess the frame rate doesn't really matter for FE. Will probably get Uniracers/rally working this way while I'm at it.

So I have now 58 games in one row (without a folder) on my Super Famicom Mini.

Is it ok to keep that many games in one row because I heard it can cause troubles when shutting down the device, if there are too many games in one row.

Any advice?

I know this got answered by themoon a few days ago in the general snes mini thread, but I figured I'd ask again just for clarification now that we have a dedicated hacking thread that doesn't have this info in the op, but adding no more than 11 games (putting the total to 32) will allow us to safely have all four save state slots, correct? Or was that just an assumption based on the number for the NES mini?

Haven't had any issues with mine, however, I resized the bottom thumbnails so they don't go off screen.

Finding decent quality cover art for some of the more obscure titles is proving a huge pain in the ass. Have any of you seen the official box art for Judge Dredd on SNES as well? It's fucking hideous.

The limit seems to be 63.

Since you are under that limit you shouldn't run into any issues. Although you'll probably have less save state memory to work with since basically the extra storage we use for games is the same area used for save states.

Oh I see, but I don‘t use the save state option too often, so I might be fine.

Maybe I will delete some games eventually.

I have 60, but set it to split into two pages of 30.

Kind of nice, because it keeps them at a manageable 30 per page, and I just have one icon to switch pages instead of a whole bunch of folders

What's a good solution for folders, etc. ?
I have around 90 games but I really wish I could just have them scrollable without the use of folders. The options in hakchi for this kind of confused me.

Maybe this has been answered with prior verisons of hakchi, but is there any reason why video capture isn't an option? If we can capture screenshots, why not videos?

I just can't get this to sync games. I can flash the new kernel okay but I always get the 3 step popup no mater what I try.

I'm using the latest virtual box in OSX High Sierra with both Win7 and Win8 images. I've added the Nintendo mini to the usb filters.

I still haven't hacked mine yet, I think I'm going to wait for a couple of updates to Hakchi to hit after jumping in with the NES version really early and seeing things improve pretty quickly.

Can I ask if anybody has a video of their system with this style of cover art installed?
I made a bunch of square covers since the default look's inconsistencies really bother me.

If anyone wants to use feel free to grab (and/or make your own with the template) here.
..I quite like the idea of something like this but I sort of need to see a few of them in video form before I can decide what type of cover art to go with.

I've pretty much got the few games that I want to add to my system ready to go and it'd be nice to also have the artwork sorted out when I decide to flash the system.

Thanks.

On the NES Classic, wasn't there a save state limitation if too many games were listed on screen which was later mitigated by the introduction of folders? Something like that?

Does the SNES have the same limitation? Should folders be used if the amount of games added is over XX amount?

Yeah, I'm a dumb ass.

Is this against the rules, or are you rightly calling me an idiot for making a mistake.

Are you sure it isn't in your Dump folder still? Why even delete it? I get not making a backup, although you should, but deleting it???

I tried to enable going to the menu over the controller. (down + select)

Didn't work. 🤔

Pre-release the shortcut was down+select. It's been changed to something else, L+R+Start+Select, I believe. Check Hackchi again and it will tell you.

62 is the limit.

I created another box art. This time for Dragon Quest III Reprise.

You'll find it in my album. That should cover it for the SNES DQ games, except for DQ I.II, which someone already did an excellent cover of.

I'll figure out something to work on next, unless anyone has a suggestion?
