Fire Emblem Warriors Review Thread

Most people like Fates stories and characters? Hahaha.

Characters, definitely. Fates' cast is consistently popular in the scheme of the larger series, and even people who don't care for the game's story typically find some of its cast endearing.

or or OR, maybe they were just hoping a crossover title would span more than the most recent releases.

The initial disappointment is somewhat justified. Whining about it for months on end every time the game is discussed tends to make people less sympathetic to that position.

It has one!

Celica is playable, but the History Mode map you have to complete to unlock her is based off the final map in Gaiden. Which is also the same map as in Echoes, only it's the 8-bit version in Warriors.

But other than that she's basically a guest star.

Actually, in that sense, playing Warriors first might enhance the experience of going through Echoes later - that way they can
get the significantly less impressive Warriors arrangement of Twilight of the Gods out of the way first instead of being disappointed by it after Echoes'.

Nice! I was expecting 7s and 6s across the board, so seeing a lot of 8s is nice. Game looks to be exactly what I’m looking for...minus the character roster.

Fuck the sword users / fates characters.

Seriously I think this will go absolutely nowhere and in this thread we should take the opportunity to put this to rest, unless we want the thread to have more of "lol modern FE haters" v "lol modern FE martyrs" rubbish.

I'll reiterate again, your hatred for these games is your prerogative, you're well entitled to that, just maybe take it down a notch or two.

I certainly don't care at all for your opinions of me so less of those s'il vous plait.
I'm not sure how quoting some reviews is so extreme that I need to take a notch down, nor am I sure how you know I hate these games but I do agree that this isn't going anywhere.

Their opinion is fine, it's just presented in a juvenile and unprofessional manner.

Eh, not how I see it, British games magazines have always been keen on giving a bad game a good drubbing, often with a dry sense of humour, and I see GC continuing this (something they've done for years) as business as usual.

I have to admit I never played Fates, despite loving Awakening, having to finish 3 stories scared me as a completionist.
But I still enjoy some of those characters.

So it's a good game if you like Musou games, and it's a bad game if you don't like Musou games. .

I'll be enjoying this together with my waifu Lucina in HD with Japanese voice.

If this game is the same as Hyrule Warriors, then I have no issue with the Metro review as I personally thought the game was hot garbage.

I do appreciate that every game has its fans though.

This confuses me. Is it just the designs or have you looked up support conversations despite not playing the games?

I'm also a fan of dry humor, but not the GameFaqs-level language sprinkled throughout the review. Granted, I don't think outright hating a game series should prevent you from reviewing one of their titles but a modicum of professionalism would go a long way. I'm actually pretty fond of harsh reviews, but not that kind.

I appreciate their candid approach. What's a mature and professional manner? Giving it a 7 instead of a 4?

Yes exactly. I definitely wouldn't have called them out for this laughably bad caption or their unironic use of "dumb" as a descriptor.

You totally nailed me detective.

Play at least Conquest to completion. The story is the 2nd worst out of the three but it has the best gameplay and maps.

Yeah, anyone can review a game, I'm not saying that. My thought was maybe there should be a stricter policy enforced by Metacritic and the like in terms of which sites they include in their aggregate scores. Evaluated by a certain degree of professionalism in their writing overall.

I hear ya, yes I do think that would be preferable.

If it's a female, there will be a cult somewhere. Lucina is just a boring female version of Marth that brings nothing to the table.

Well no she isn't, because she actually has a personality and motivations that extend beyond than "my kingdom is in danger" and "I care about my friends!"

Meanwhile, Lyn's a relatively basic character in her own game and irrelevant past the tutorial.

Also "a female?" Really?

I'm not even talking about that...

Yes, the roster is lackluster. I think anyone can accept that. But retroactively dredging up complaints for Awakening and Fates, and them alone, without acknowledging that the older titles had flaws too is bias.

Not surprised by the reviews really. Musou games often have lukewarm receptions. Very divisive, and it's not hard to see why, they get repetitive if you don't enjoy the game play enough.

As a FE and Musou fan I'm still looking forward to playing it though.

As a newcomer to the series (there’s a few of us), yes. Yes I do!

I personally hated most of Fates aside from gameplay and the music but hey that's great! More fire emblem fans are only good for the future of the series.

The only important thing is that they find a good middle of the road in what's good about the old and new games and don't feel pressured to keep certain features (marriage, children, pair-up,...) in the new games just because they are popular. They used to experiment with new features constantly and it would be great if they kept doing so.

At the time of this post, there are sixteen reviews rated 75 and above. Does "Metro Game Central" really have that much weight behind their review? I know this is an oft-discussed issue on GAF, but it just seems silly that a couple of reviews can derail an overall score. I mean, sixteen reviews are above 75 and the average still comes out to 73. How much weight does GameSpot carry?

73 Metascore? Woof. Easy pass from a longtime Fire Emblem fan. More time for Mario Odyssey.

I'd suggest watching actual gameplay videos, especially if you're a longtime fan of the franchise, instead of judging it based on a Metacritic score.

Definitely not the game for me. Dragon Quest Heroes 2 showed me what a musou could be when they fleshed out the concept a bit more, going back to something like this will be impossible.

yeah it's the tone and approach of the review. Game Informer used to shit on every Mario Party in the reviews (like, 1s and 3s) and it was done in a funny way. They were not behaving in a turdlike manner

To be honest, I wasn’t too excited about the marriage and children (I thought I would be but I was wrong). It became more of a bother. The core gameplay was king but I also really liked the characters and story. I played Birthright first and am currently on Conquest and enjoying it even more.

I haven’t even opened Echoes yet. Not enough gaming hours in the day!

Is Niles playable in this? Love me some LGBT representation.

He's in as an support NPC, and data mining has found he has full character supports and lines, so, he's likely going to be free DLC after release, assuming they're taking the Hyrule Warriors route

As only a casual FE and Musou fan, I think I’m going to skip this one. The reviews like GameXplain saying that it doesn’t stack up to Hyrule Warriors kind of sealed the deal.

The FE characters aren’t enough to hook me on their own. I’ve only ever played Awakening.

What the fuck that Metro review

I read it and it seemed fine? It's the opinion of one person. Not everyone is going to agree that mousou games are good/bad. I can already tell reading a few reviews that I align much more closely to the Metro review than the others giving it an 8.

Right? I think all of us, at one point or another, have greatly enjoyed titles that weren't exactly declared masterpieces by critics. We oughtta see the why and not just a number.

Clearly the Metro fellow is bringing the show down, and to someone who loved the hell out of Hyrule Warriors, a stance that inherently hates the genre is irrelevant to me. Removing his review makes the average 77.5. (As of right now, more reviews are to follow, surely).

I'm not enamoured by the roster (both the selection and the choice to include clones) but everything else sounds like a pretty fun time. Tempting as it is to get it at launch, chances are this will be discounted come the holidays, so I'm gonna hold up a bit for now.

I have it preordered but I’m now on the fence. I love FE and have limited experience of the Warriors games. I was hoping the FE elements in this would sell it.

Edit: I should add, I watched the direct and it looks great fun, I was totally sold. Now I’m questioning ‘how long will it be fun for?’.

I got it for £36, the price of three uk cinema tickets (without my usual cinema discount though). In pure entertainment/value terms, simplistically, if I can get six and a bit hours of fun it’s worth it (comparing apples and oranges, I know).

Probably, they're one of the most read - if not the most read - uk reviewers. And the best too.

So is there any sign or Tharja in this or am I waiting?

Edit: Also, this has split screen right? I honestly expected lower scores, might have to pick this up
next year

Expected this since at the end of the day, it's a warriors game lol

Preordered at walmart way back when the release date wasn't confirmed yet so the order still says it's not releasing till 12/31. Is that normal?

Do y'all think that the DLC will be as much of a success as HW? I think of that game's DLC as a prime example of DLC and Season Passes done right. Especially in the current gaming climate with a kind of "pay to win" trend it's awesome to see fair, exciting DLC.

It's obvious from the article that he never even gave the game a chance because he hates the series. I have no issue with people being critical but it's super obvious he made up his mind before even playing it.

And yes, the writing is juvenile. For example:

The irony is that this still counts as probably our favourite Dynasty Warriors game, but we assure you that is not a recommendation. The closest we can get to one is that we were rarely angry while playing the game. We were bored, but at such a consistent level that it was almost relaxing. The more you play the less you care, until it all becomes a perpetual motion engine of button-mashing brain cell destruction.

Fire Emblem Warriors has more in common with Cookie Clicker than a real video game, as you mindlessly jab the same two attack buttons for hours on end, until everyone is beaten and your ability to form coherent thoughts has been bludgeoned to death alongside them. So, like we said, just like all the other Dynasty Warriors games.

He straight up says it's not a real video game. Seriously?

It's also kind of sloppy. He uses "simplistic," "mindless" and "repetitive" a number of times as if we didn't get it the first time.

And also, I say this as someone who is not super interested in FEW and most likely won't be buying it. It's just a bad review.

Seriously. Both Hyrule Warriors and now FE Warriors feel like missed opportunities to expand Musou game play.

I would have loved the more party adventure type feel of Heroes here, and Hyrule Warriors should have done more to expand on exploration and using the world and gear to impact that world. There is some good here but just not enough to keep me engaged sadly.

I think it will. Each pack will introduce 3 characters and three history maps (this games equivalent of adventure mode). The only thing HW has over it is that they used the DLC to add MM representation to the roster but the DLC for FE:W is focused on the three games already represented.

I don't think Lucina is bad, but her motivations aren't that complex like you are trying to say.
She is the typical savior from the future trope

This is not Smash and Lucina isn't a Marth clone in Awakening. She's actually the true protagonist of that game.
She really isn't, she is like Azura, important to the plot but Chrom and Robin that ultimately leads the game.

Not really.

A lot of lead Fire Emblem characters start with 'I'm important, my family/kingdom was betrayed, now I'm on the run/out for revenge with my retainers'. Lucina's is more 'My entire generation is stuck in a horrific, post-apocalyptic future. As a last grab for survival I grabbed the children of my dad's greatest allies, took the identity of a mythological hero for them to rally around and travelled back in time, looking to set things right.'

How on earth that is 'brings nothing to the table' is beyond me, she has one of the more original backgrounds compared to most of the more popular Lords.

I never said she was complex. I said she has stronger motivations than Marth (who is a very basic character)
