Netflix has never done live broadcasting, so anyone expecting that is setting themselves up for disappointment.

It's more likely to be old season reviews or documentaries.

Neither had Dave until they started doing it.

It's unlikly right now given the markets that already have deals, but it would be easy to get it to more people and then gradually open it to more regions as more and more contracts end.

The question of live broadcasting is what I thought of after I posted the above.

If they really wanted to work with a live delivery system then they would do well to look at WWE's network platform - I think the NHL uses that platform for their online service??

Disney bought BAM Tech this year, so that's out of the question (if they're going to partner with Netflix at all).

Disney is on Netflix.
I kid.

I doubt Disney bought it so they could stop supplying customers with their tech, it's good business and they have a ton of clients now. They can stream Wrestlemania to almost 2 million people worldwide in 720p without a single glitch, I'm sure they will be an option Liberty is looking at.

Again, I'd be very surprised if Netflix suddenly became a live streaming service and Liberty would not set up their own service for that somewhere down the line.

Disney surely wants to provide the tech to more clients, of course. They didn't spend a billion dollar on the tech to keep it to themselves. I meant that it would be weird to partner with Netflix for the archive material and then go to their competitor for live streaming.

Netflix doing live streaming is not out of the question, though. I'd even say it's definitely happening. Live streaming is a big and growing part of the market and Amazon and Disney, two of their biggest competitors, already have a big chunk of the market (easy to forget, but Amazon owns Twitch). It would be foolish of them to keep ignoring that market. Whether or not F1 is going to be part of this, is a different question, of course.

Nah, I bet they're building that team around him and offered him quite a bit of money.

I also reckon there is some development on the engine front post 2018 that gave him some confidence to sign on.

Just to confirm what everyone else has said about possible Netflix deals, I don't think Live would be an issue for them but they have said previously the only way they'd do live sports is if they own the event

http://nypost.com/2015/12/07/netflix-is-open-to-streaming-live-sports-on-one-condition/

The Los Gatos, Calif., company isn’t interested in buying rights from established sports leagues because, according to Sarandos, “the leagues hold all the pricing power.”

The 51-year-old executive, speaking at a media conference in New York, highlighted as an example Disney’s X Games programming on ESPN. Disney developed the X Games and owns the rights to the events.

“That’s what it would take to get me into sports,” Sarandos told the audience at the UBS Global Media & Communications event.

Not only on engine front, RIC said that RBR moved their 2018 car development further this year and they won't wait till the last moment for development shift

As we all know, RBR got screwed at the beginning of last few seasons either by Renault / themselves with late testing / FIA tech clampdowns. IF they manage it right (and if we expect Renault to deliver), they could be a top contenders in Australia.

I hope F1 stays far away from the MLB stuff.

I mean it works ok and looks great, but who would want to watch a race "live" on a 2+ minute delay?

Why already sign for 2020 when you still have a contract 'till 2019 anyway? Wonder what RBR offered to convince him to do that.

I'd be fine with up to 20 or 30 seconds.

Anything much more and it's hard to participate in a chat or thread during the race without getting spoiled about someone's upcoming pass or crash

20-30 from the actual event or the event as shown on tv? Only you're already at around 20-30 seconds if you watch a bunch of stuff what with kit delays, sat delays, station delays (live sport is not copyright, so broadcasters put it through a delay which lags you behind the real action a few seconds, this then qualifies as not really live, but not enough to make them take the live logo down!).

Strange decision by Max, maybe he doesn't see a chance of moving to Mercedes or Ferrari?

Personally I wouldn’t want to drive for the Italians, and who knows if Merc will be the team to beat in the future. Red Bull will almost always have a good chassis, a good engineering team and all they really have as a wildcard is the engine.

In 2011, Alonso signed his contract extension with Ferrari until the end of 2016.

It's not to say that the length of the contract doesn't mean anything, but Jos probably made sure to have a performance clause and probably others in it that would allow his son to leave sooner if he wanted to.

My money is on a performance clause plus that Max would do well to build up the team around him. Mercedes is very much built around Hamilton and Ferrari around Vettel, no point in playing second fiddle. Can't imagine that Max would sign for another three years without a performance clause and with a Honda engine looming in the distance.

I'm sure Jos Max was threatening to pull out completely after the whole Honda/Torro Rosso thing looming next year. Then RB showed up with a pile of cash.
I have no doubt Max will be their #1 next season. Wondering what happens to Ricciardo tho

I mentioned it on the previous page; Amazon has been live streaming Thursday Night Football all season and it's been pretty good. Watched part of a game last night and the connection was solid. Considering that Netflix runs on Amazon's infrastructure, I think live-streaming races could be on the table.

Not sure why Max would be scared of Honda when his Renault engine has completely shat the bed all season.
