Quick Summary

XBO : 1080p/30fps.
PS4 : 1080p/30fps.
PS4 Pro : 1440p/30fps.
XBO X: 1440p/30fps.
Switch : 720p/26~30fps on docked, and 480p on handheld mode like Crash N.Sane Trilogy.


The concessions operated on the Switch version:

- No fur on Crash.
- No Ambient occlusion.
- Some light effects have been removed.
- 3D models animated in the background on PS4/Pro are not present in the backgrounds on Switch.
- Aliasing quite visible.
- Tesselation donwgraded on Switch and no physics for grass.
- The loading times are a too long.

So, Nintendo Switch version seems to be a very solid port. Loading times are a bit annoying, but glad that the performance is stable (though 30fps is sub optimal for a fast-paced racing game in general).

720p docked and 480p handheld is "solid"?
The game is 30fps on Xbox One & PS4, they had to do serious cuts elsewhere to make it perform half-way stable on Switch. I think SD resolution for handheld mode is a good place to compromise. I was worried it would end up seriously wonky framerate.
 
Ill probably stick with ps4 version but wouldn't feel cheated if i got switch.

The port I'm really interested in is spyro - if it's stable 30 and if they put the whole game on 1 cart that'll be the best version.

They should have targeted 60. The gameplay looks stuttery, at least for me.
I know that the original was 30fps as well but it feels like the old consoles played back 30fps way smoother than today's consoles with whacky ass frame timings.

To Digital Foundry, yeah. They give the Switch a pass on resolution/performance all the time. But they have no issues in stating how "unacceptable" 900p is for X1/PS4 games since 2013.
Look for the usual "pretty impressive for the Switch" phrase on their review (if they are doing one at all).

I gave up on the console versions of the Spyro Trilogy for this reason, it runs 30 but apparently there's something with the frame pacing that makes it annoying to play. Waiting for that PC release now and will probably get CTR on PC as well.

I'm sorry but in a world where Mario Kart 8 Deluxe exists this is absolutely unacceptable, and I thought Team Sonic Racing was bad.

and before anyone chimes in, YES of course this game might have a lot more going on in some areas than MK8, but that's not the point, the point is that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe delivers a beautiful Kart racing game at a flawless 1080p60/720p60 on Switch.
meanwhile CTR runs at 1080p30 on fucking PS4... and 1440p30 on Xbox One X! WTF?

let's compare this again: MK8dx = 1080p60 on Switch, CTR = 1080p30 on PS4
and there is no fucking defending that, because even if we compare them strickly by how good the games look... CTR's graphical step up from MK8dx isn't even close to being big enough to justify such a disparity in performance.

and let's not even talk about how the Pro and the One X run the exact same settings... which just screams rushed port.
just as a metric, the Xbox One X usually pushes 2X the amount of pixels a second compared to the Pro in many games (Red Dead Redeption 2 to name a high profile case)

And the funny thing is mk8 looks better. All hardware is sufficient enough that it comes down to the developer and their art style more than how many polygons/whatever are thrown around.

To be honest, this is IMO the worst aspect of John opinion. They gave NS so much pass card. Even after all sacrifices and looking like shit, but hey is portable.
This remind that Jurassic Park meme about what they not should.

I was talking the same thing with my brother. It feels like everytime Switch have a situation like that, they pat its head as if its not that much of problem since cuts are supposed to be made, have to take in consideration that you're playing in a handheld and thats an "amazing feat".

I have pretty much a lot of respect for Jon. I like all his videos, but this is notably one of his worst points. Just watching his take on Lucky Tale felt like as if its gonna be a better experience just because its on Switch now.

They dont always give the Switch a free pass. Go watch their Saints Row 3 vid, or especially their Ark Survival Evolved Switch vid, which is hilarious by the way.

Regardless Nintendo needs to make sure the Pro has enough power to run 480p switch games at native 720p on handheld mode

Sub native handheld games are bad enough, 480p is an absolute embarrasment
 
Wait are the load times bad on ps4 or just switch? Got an ssd in my ps4 so hopefully it's good enough

Seems like it's 20s on base ps4 and 40s on switch roughly

It's a port from much stronger hardware, what do you expect from a Switch owner? I also have a Xbox One, but portability beats higher resolution for me.

Sorry to be that guy...but I dont get all the 30/60 fps talk. I can never tell the difference and it honestly doesn't bother me. Unless a game is 15fps then as long as it works I'm usually happy.

For me the disagreement onSwitch ports started with DOOM 2016: a game whose gameplay was absolutely built around 60 FPS now running on Switch at an unstable 25-30 FPS with a lot of effects cut down (especially in portable mode) and a large resolution drop coupled with dynamic resolution adjustments further down... all post process effects using a fractional multiplier of the screen resolution on top of that too.

Thing is that yeah they are right it is impressive considering the mobile phone HW it is running on... but that makes some games more of tech demos than full games. Playability is definitely impacted: the DF review sometimes make a big deal of games on PC being so much better than on Xbox One or PS4 because of glorious 60 FPS framerate (Xbox One and PS4 get no brownie points for having much more constrained HW than PC)... then you have a first person shooter game built around fast smooth motion now running at an unstable 30 FPS and suddenly the framerate is not important anymore (here come brownie points for the constrained HW).

Yet, I see no one complaining that XBONES and PS4 are the same resolution and framerate? Just folk talking about XBONEX should be better than PRO, but no flipside argument for balance.....

In any case, RDR2 should not be used to talk about XBONEX's pixel pushing power......It was a botched CBR implementation from Rockstar which was never fixed......RDR2 can run 1620p or higher on PRO.....Perhaps even 1800p...

A 60fps man, is now making excuses for sub 30fps framerates at low resolution and botched graphical settings. He even made the same excuses for RYSE on xbox, which falls into the teens at times...…..

For those going on a about why complain about X vs Pro resolution when you don’t moan about PS4 vs 1S...

Erm, first of all, you won’t be getting 60fps on one without the other. The CPU’s are near enough identical.

Secondly the power difference between the two is nothing compared to the power difference between the pro and x.

Thirdy, if the pro is running the game at x res with y frame rate, then the x should in theory be able to handle more with little strain.

And lastly... the PS4 and 1S are both already 1080/30. There’s no head room for anything more. They could likely get it running 1080/60 with some work but both machines would benefit from this, it just one.

So yeah... this is one hell of a cock up. Once again, the X gets the shaft, for no reason. It’s stupid, and makes me worry a tad about me that gen machines...
