The Smash community harassed a 15 year old female player to the point she decided to stop playing the game

OP and other OP I do want to apologize for furthering the sidetracking. Seriously this should be about this kid and their experience.
I am replying to the first post to give the thread a restart of sorts.

No point giving it a restart if details aren't given. And I think the thread should be about what actually happened, then people could argue on the basis of that. I've yet to see anyone put forth any details and the tweet itself was incredibly vague with just using the word attention and the details otherwise have been vague as well.

Yeah, I'm sure the poor little 15 year old child (lol) wants a bunch of creepy comments from dudes in their 20s and 30s.

Who said anything about creepy comments?

Just a little empathy such as saying sorry you had to deal with that.

You do understand this thread is not about her twitter, it is about her beating someone in a tournament for a fighting game and being dogpiled for that. Is winning a game attention whoring these days?

I did so I modified my response somewhat. I still say she should have been ready for dogpiling. For every fan you get a critic/hater. How many thousands of people dogpile pewdiepie every day. You just gotta handle it and if you're a 15 year old kid then clearly stay the fuck off the internet, you can't handle it.

Fair enough, will edit quote. All good.

It was spread by clickbait youtubers and reddit. It's not like they were some super viewed twitter page or promoted themselves to then be ridiculed.

No! You apparently don't understand. It gives me carte blanche to dig into everything she has ever done to justify me being an asshole.

I personally know a girl that's a top 10 splatoon 2 player. She has attended many world comps. She keeps to herself on the internet. No twitter, just facebook among friends and family. No voicing of opinions while you're engaged in something that will put you in front of thousands of people every time. People pick up on that and use it as their avenue of attack. 10 autistic haters can make your life a living hell, even if you have 10,000 fans spouting positive encouragement every day. You gotta be ready for that. A 15 year old never was, and yet she's active on public social media. Bad recipe for a bad cupcake.

I definitely agree with you, it same as someone decides they want to be actor or singer, those people have to accept the fact their lives be no longer be private and they always be on public eye and that comes both having fans and haters who just want to shit on them. Its reality of the situation, when you become active online gamer then also exposing yourself to shitty side of internet, you either find way to deal with it or just don't go in to it.

Good luck, folks.
Yuuuup, the thread peaked here.

Oh shit here we go again

It suddenly makes perfect sense as to why 'she' is being ridiculed by haters. I don't promote (couldn't resist the meme video sorry), I just analyze the situation. Truth is a 'female' player never beat the boyz. I assume that's the 'technicality' that has everybody's nickers in a twist.

I was actually wondering about this - are there any female players that are competitive in the top ranks of professional gaming?

I wouldn't let any of this bother me at all... Besides who's gonna take a community serious when some of their members don't even bathe... What's even more sad is that smash tournaments have signs to bathe regularly. Just let the haters bark!

No, almost none. The problem with female competitive gamers is they focus on tribalism, they seek out other women instead of forming a competent team.

It becomes like a novelty more than something people take seriously.

Are you an Incel? Because I think you're an Incel.

Calling it like I see it punkin.
Well you might need to get your sights checked because you're off target. I don't even know how you could arrive at some dumb conclusion like that based off of the previous post.

This is how it is with females in competitive gaming, girls form teams based upon sex, they seek it out and none of them ever go very far, because as I said it's tribalism over effectiveness. They all band together instead of trying to form a team based upon meta knowledge, chemistry and mechanical competency. They instinctively handicap themselves and limit their potential.

Guy's seek out the aforementioned in the people they play with, it doesn't matter if it's a guy or girl. Girls rarely fit the role though as they are either bonded together with other girls or they're spread so thin there's no one in the pool to draw from. They can sometimes fill the void but there's a natural reaction time disadvantage with the average female as opposed to even poor reacting males so they are generally not up to snuff.

I mean I'm all for shit posting and calling people names but you're just being dumb.

I don't even have to. I could point out what you think about women in gaming in previous posts but you then doubled down in the next comment below.

Too often when there is "scandal(aka making tiny thing into big)" it appears that they are guys pretending to be girls. More attention like that?

I remember some "woman" that "leaked" epic bullshit specs of switch before release and white knights defended "her" because transwathevers cant be liars and assholes i guess.

And of course most of he/she said were just bullshit after real specs were out.

If these transpeople want normal treatment, they should stop riding on their identity and just shut up about it. + I bet that many just claim to be trans because they know it gives attention

For this case: Cry me a river, just attention whoring, nobody should care if some derps harras them on the net, block Button is made for them.

There are millions of players that listen to some 14y old psychopat and just laugh, why this should get any more attention than them

How sexy is to be one of these and get the most attention + defence forces activated:
Trans > women> kids > Animals > men

And that's why I labelled you an Incel.
And it doesn't make any sense relative to what I said so I will continue to maintain that you're saying dumb things. Someone is an incel because of the tribalistic behavior of women in competitive gaming and how it hinders their potential for more.

I mean come on, you can't be this fucking stupid.

I don't even have to. I could point out what you think about women in gaming in previous posts but you then doubled down in the next comment below.

There was one bit that sounded strange and could have triggered you about reaction time difference in sexes... but I think DynamiteCop! DynamiteCop! did his research:

It is documented in the literature that the muscle contraction time is the same for males and females[18] and motor responses in males are comparatively stronger than females,[19] this explains why males have faster simple RTs for both auditory as well as visual stimuli.

If you strongly strongly disagree with him, arguing the points (regardless of the form they are written in being something triggering you or not) and stop calling him names?

I do not think he needs any white knighting, but this kind of name calling on this subject when one person is arguing and the other is throwing insults... gets a bit tiring.

I played games competitively and in leagues for nearly a decade and a half. It's hard to have conversations with forum warriors like this guy who don't understand the first thing about any of these communities or what happens within them; especially when it comes to women.

Try actually making some kind of argument baby brain, you can't even rationalize why you're calling me what you are.
Ok. As far as I can tell from the disgusting things you've said so far in this thread is that you're an incel. You're mad that women don't want anything to do with you and you're even more mad that women who are in transition especially don't want anything to do with you.

You're still saying a whole lot and a lot of nothing at the same time. Shit posting at its finest or worst, either way you're not any closer to validating your feeble insult.

Between our back and forth I've provided a significant amount of evidence that you're an Incel. People just need to read.

I've been bullied in video games online for literally decades and when I was a child, get over it lol. It's the internet, it's not real life.
In the 90s, the internet was much less omnipresent and influential to every day's life. It is much easier to shrug something off as "just the internet" when you are online for an hour a day with your trusty 56k and do not have much more exchange than texts and maybe some gameplay interaction. Nowadays, children and teenagers own specialised devices, so called mobile phones, that connect to the internet and is used by them and others to present and shape their outside image. The internet has become, through social media, much less anonymous and for younger generations in particular, has become an extension of themselves. Children bully other children for not buying expensive skins in Fortnite....

To say "it is the internet, get over it" might be a healthy position for oneself to take, but it is not a helpful advice.

Folks, just a gentle nudge on this thread. It largely seems to have worked itself out anyway. During these type of topics, they will naturally and inadvertently take tangential turns and broaden the scope of the initial debate.

Naturally this will bring in contentious comparisons and analogies. Some of them will be apt and others will be disingenuous or misguided. As a result tensions will run high and people will get frustrated. If you feel yourself getting frustrated then take a step back. At this point it's about choosing when to engage and keeping that engagement civil. If you find your opponents views too abhorrent or controversial then just make your point and step away. If you fail to convince the user of your position, it is not necessarily a lost cause. There are people reading who will formulate their own stances based on the strength of the arguments made.

We won't be taking actions on the reports this has generated this far as we feel a gentle nudge is more appropriate than getting bans and reply bans out without due warning and allowing self correction :)

...did anyone even bother to check this person's Twitter after looking at this thread? She's made nearly a dozen posts since saying she was leaving forever and never playing the game again.

People have made 5 page debate out of a teenage's emotional outburst... :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Never change, internet.

Do we have documentation (audio/video or witnesses) or example of said harassment?

This.
She's upset, I realize that. But: "Envy reared its ugly head from a few players in the scene who didn't think she deserved the attention for what was just a local win. And a lot of them thought she was only getting attention because she was a girl. "... Well, people can think whatever the heck they want. That's not bullying or harassment.

EXTREMELY bad form to be going after a 15 year old over something like this.
Honestly if people know that this kid is 15 and are still deciding "just going to send a quick negative message here" then that's a fucking shitty move.

Yeah, I get that there is trash talk in fighting games but that really really should be reserved for players who are not minors and can maybe handle themselves a bit better.

No need for this kind of nonsense over a win that doesn't even sound like it happened at a major tournament.

I am all for banter and trash talking and things that add a bit of "edge" to games like Smash. It's fun to see salty reactions and over the top celebrations and it's awesome to see intense rivalries come to a head.

A 15 year old though? That's an underdog story and it would be better if the community was a lot more supportive.

Yes, maybe kids should not have social media accounts. I don't know. That's not the issue here.
Yes, maybe people shouldn't thrust a 15 year old kid into the spotlight say "OMG a girl is good at games" and put that weight of representing an entire gender on their shoulders.

For fuck sakes though, if you aren't a kid yourself, don't be contacting 15 year olds on the internet to tell them your opinion on anything.
Especially don't bother if all you've got to say is some bullshit.

(Edit: My post is based on the understanding that people have been contacting this kid directly and making shitty comments. People are entitled to their opinions on whether or not the attention was deserved. Also, any serious allegations against individuals would need to be backed by evidence.)

The Smash community is hot garbage filled to the brim with toxicity. They are one of the more cancerous parts of the larger gaming community.

Natural Selection 2 had at least one chick (rantology) that I know of that played on the highest tier. Game seems pretty dead nowadays though so I don't know how active the community is at the moment.
