FBI Asked Sony for Data on User Who Allegedly Used PlayStation Network to Sell Cocaine

In October, the FBI applied for a search warrant compelling Sony to provide data on a PlayStation 4 user who was allegedly part of a cocaine distribution network, according to court records reviewed by Motherboard. The application even asks for what games the alleged drug dealer played, and his progress in them.
The search warrant shows how law enforcement agencies are increasingly asking game console companies, and manufacturers of internet connected devices in the home in general, for data on users.

I bet was someone around here lol.
Really curious which game they used to do their business.

I appreciate that they got a proper warrant for that. It shouldn’t feel like a kindness, and yet...

If you’ve got a warrant, I guess you’re gonna come in

I'm more interested in how Sony responded.
"Have you fucking seen the PSN? Selling games is pretty much all it's good for, records are for chumps."

Is this even legal? I thought my info was “protected” on those things. Or is it when it to comes to authorities there’s no such thing as legal and illegal?

I’m pretty sure if you read the terms of service it explains you can’t use their service for illegal activities and if you do, they will hand over the information to authorities.

Yeah correct, that’s something that slipped out of my mind.

Makes sense. I'd need drugs to sit through more 10 minute 'cinematic' walking sections

On a serious note, i think they do this more to set a precedent than to get the actual info. I'm sure they could get it in other ways should they really need to. Remember the encrypted iphone spectacle?

That's right. Authorities don't have to respect your right to privacy.

You haven’t been playing GTA then
I tried, but the police chases were so annoying and unrealistic. Steal a car and in less than 5 minutes you have 20 police cars chasing you!
IRL you steal a car and have to wait 2 days for 1 police car to try to find you for one hour before they give up.

I also think the process is probably different in UK/EU then say the US, I know they have more laws when it’s about user data and privacy.

Nah they just really hate car thieves.

I mean, unless theres e2e encryption, any network is open to a judge asking for data.

Indeed, although whats legal and what is not is different on each country, and even within. I mean, weed is legal is CA, but not at federal level.
