Take care dude. Hoping it all works out for all of you. Just do whatever you reasonably can to reduce your risk.

I think the UK is an interesting case because you can see the way people are reacting.

Whether or not they are doing the right thing is unknown and will remain unknown for some time.

I would point out though that social media and moral outrage is playing it's part here.

So are some governments doing the wrong thing but doing it because they fear public backlash?
Are the UK government doing what they are doing because it's right and they do not give a damn about the backlash?

People are saying things like "look at how China got it under control" but that's a nation that does not give a damn about human rights. So...
That nation that famously cares about and values human life....

In a lot of places, UK and Netherlands for example, people are basically demanding a full lockdown and are furious that the government dare allow schools to stay open etc.

If I see that damn curve one more time...

A curve that conveniently does not show how long this process will last.
The longer a shutdown needs to last the more sever the consequences will be.
More severe than what is already going on? Nobody really knows.

Some of the utter shite I am reading online just really shows that everyone wants to appear to be "in the know".

At the end of the day people in government are being advised by experts BUT they are also probably trying to minimize public outrage so that they will still have a political career when this is done.

How many of them will ultimately acquiesce to an outraged public that are demanding "do it like China"?
Lock down is what works , ASIA declares them idiots , and I also think this.

Also ASIA knows what SARS does and means, don’t invent te wheel.

If they do, I hope the rest of the world isolates the UK, you guys are an Island ... good luck. What kind of horse shit is this?

Take another virus to try this out, also rest of the world is wrong? I bet those countries in lock down advised no scientists.

Two extremely interesting videos.

1. "This video is filmed in Nanjing, by Japanese director Takeuchi Ryo. It offers a comprehensive look into Nanjing’s virus prevention measures. According to official statistics announced by Nanjing city, the number of people infected by coronavirus has gone from 93 to 0 as of 03/08/2020. We are not trying to say that all countries around the world should do exactly what Nanjing did to keep the virus from spreading. We merely want to offer some reference to those who are in need, with the hope that this video could inspire you to come up with measures that are suitable to your country." (3/14/20)

2. "W5's Avery Haines meets Dr. Bruce Aylward, the Canadian doctor at the forefront of the World Health Organization's fight against the coronavirus." (3/14/20)

i talked to my friend on the phone yesterday, he just moved to Ohio, was telling me all about his job. he works as a bartender, and almost everyone was let go except for him and one other person. together they kicked serious ass this weekend tending bar. then like an hour after i get off the phone, i see Ohio has closed all bars and restaurants.

then i got another friend, we are in a band together. he has diabetes and has self quarantined himself. welp. i can't blame him, since he's at higher risk. i was out and about this weekend a little bit. mostly to/from the store.
People are saying things like "look at how China got it under control" but that's a nation that does not give a damn about human rights. So...
oh yeah, i see this a lot, mostly from people who want to turn this into yet another "Why does America suck?" talking point. rmde at these people. i'm like, yeah, no duh China has their shit on lockdown, they are also harvesting body organs from prisoners. the gov't enforcing stuff on the general population is kinda their thing.

Same here. The strange thing is I didn't have cold in years if not decades, but since yesterday I start coughing and my throat feel dry like yours.
I have no clue who could give me this present.
Good thing I work from home in general not only in this particular time.

No cough for me yet. It feels like there's a bit of phlegm at the back of my throat though, kind of like what you get from smoking on a semi regular basis

Anyway just woke up, and I feel fine for the most part. Throat feels better than yesterday, but I started slamming vitamin c last night when I felt it coming on. There's a good chance this was just a cold and I stopped it. Hopefully that's the case.

I think this thing has made us all hyper aware of our bodies and any slight change is going to be a concern for most of us.

Shit, calm down dude.

I ain't from the UK. Just giving my opinion.

Sorry I'm not on my knees blowing China.
That famous bastion of human rights and transparency.

"I hope the rest of the world isolates you". Fucksakes.
Stop pissing your panties and wisen the fuck up.
They are trying a different approach and we don't know what the end result will be.
At least it's an informed approach.

I was replying to THE:MILKMAN THE:MILKMAN regarding whether or not it's far too late for a full shutdown and I proposed that some governments will maybe just act in accordance with what a hysterical populace demands.

Some people, as you have demonstrated rather well, simply will not accept anything other than "do what I want and do it now" and will react angrily to not seeing things done their preferred way.

This whole thing still has weeks to run before you get to start up the "I told you so" bullshit that is surely coming no matter the end result.

I hear North Korea has zero cases! So they must be doing something right?

Can we finally get away from the fact that only China has been able to successfully fight the virus because you do not respect human rights or are a dictatorship? That is absolute nonsense. Every fucking country on this planet can achieve the same thing as China with the virus. A lockdown is a lockdown. Contacts are minimized, you only go out to work, walk (alone or with people from the same household), go shopping or to the doctor. End of story.
The only reason why a country doesn't get shit on is that either a) the government is incompetent or b) the people of the country are too stupid to follow simple steps. Sure, it is not easy and yes, the economy gets fucked, but that is necessary. People who don't understand this should just shut up and lock themselves away forever because they are useless for society anyway.

Besides that, all the anxious bullshit posts are annoying. Grow up, grow some balls, take responsibility and at least be there for those who need your help, the old and the sick....and try not to infect them, because that's what this is all about. This stupid virus is not a major health hazard for 99% of people, so some people really need to stop acting like they will die. In all political threads here there is constant talk about the victimization of the left and here suddenly everyone is pretending to be a victim, but you are not.

I'm wondering that if the point of a total shutdown is to slow the spread then the German model shows that it is far too late for that.
Germany's shutdown began today.

In Italy, here is how it worked shutdown vs no shut-down (also note the delay between the shutdown and when curve starts to flatten):

Sorry I'm not on my knees blowing China.

South Korea, despite having group of motherfuckers spreading it on purpose, handled it classy.
It is also in Asia, cough.

Once this is all over, do you think China will be held accountable? Or face international punishment for their initial covering up of the virus?

I imagine not. But someone at least has to bollock them at some point.

Just glass them already. This shit always starts in China. iPhones will cost a little more but that’s fine.

Netherlands: Four patients deceased, 278 new patients, in total 1413 persons tested positive

From the radio news in Italy: The Governor of the Province of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, sees first signs of a slower spread of the coronavirus in the region severely affected by the crisis. The increase in infected cases is not as strong as in the past two or three days, the politician said on Radio 1:

"Let's hope that this is the beginning of a reversal of the trend - I say this whisperingly."

A decrease despite high numbers (exponential spread) is a very good sign.

I think we're basically agreeing here. I think there is a lot of confusion about what a complete shutdown means/does. Many think it is to stop the spread when in reality 'flattening the curve' is controlling the rate of infections so the hospitals can cope. This is why the UK have been talking about timing/controlling the introduction of restrictions. Rightly or wrongly they feel, or their models show, that this is the right way?

Obviously I hope their models are accurate.

My body condition has been all over the place for weeks now. I've been sneezing a couple times daily for a few weeks at least, could be hayfever but I've never suffered before in my life. Then a couple weeks back I woke up one morning with the crazy shits and shivers which lasted one intense morning but has taken about two weeks to recover fully from. During that time I started to feel a little tickle in the throat, but I took some ibuprofen and it disappeared for about a week, until about Thursday last week when it came back. Since then I've basically had this nagging phlegmy feeling in my throat and the occasional runny nose/blocked nose. No fever at all though but I didn't check when I had the shits. Didn't even think to check to be honest.

Doesn't seem like anyone around me has been going down with the virus so who knows what the fuck it is. Maybe I'm just getting old. Not to sound like a massive racist but the area I live is home to so many mainland Chinese people. Like there are apartment blocks which are basically all Chinese. I simply can't imagine that not a single person has unwittingly bought back the virus with them. The way it has exploded around Europe just makes Japan's numbers seem so fucking weird. Like it just doesn't make sense. Okay they shut schools and gyms, but life has been going on as normal for the most part. I guess it will have its time in due course.

Just finished a management meeting at the company I work for. I'm in the UK and this is a US based company. We were told:

  • We follow company guidelines, not the UK guidelines
  • No more than 3 people in a room, including meeting rooms
  • All meetings cancelled
  • No canteen facilities face to face. Orders should be placed on WhatsApp and have one designated person to distribute food
  • Only 2 people in the changing rooms at one time (usually 20+ on shift change)
  • No showers allowed on site (we have a shower facility for the ops who work in the messy areas)
  • Temperature checks to be carried out at the gate. Anyone with a high temperature is sent home.
  • The most bizarre one? : Self-isolation for 14 days, no policing or proof required. Full sick pay.

It's a bit OTT is all of this and not very British.

Sounds like you are OK.
I'd still take a couple of weeks behind closed doors just incase you would infect anyone.

I think Japan wasn't testing so widely?
Like they have twice as many deaths as Germany but Germany has seven times as many confirmed cases.

Japan has A LOT of tourism from China so it is very unusual but nobody really knows right now.

I'd expect a lot of interesting stuff to come out in the future but it is bizarre when you have people like Merkel saying Germany will end up with like 60% of the population infected.

So we've to believe that Germany will end up with about 50 million cases but we're all good in South Korea with less than 10k and Japan with less than 1k.

We'll have to wait a good few weeks before we see the bigger picture here.

Recently my brother has developed a bit of a cough with no phlegm, but with no fever, aches, chills, malaise, or muscle soreness. Drinking fluids constantly, tea, rest, and Tylenol.

Could this be something else then corona?

Germany's shutdown began today.
Just Bavaria, the part with 886 infected and 4 dead. North-Rhine-Westphalia has 1.407 infected and 5 dead and isn't really doing much. Oh yeah, you can't enter and exit the bus from the front anymore woohoo..

What is the point of Tylenol if he only has a cough?

This is all strange for me because there's been a total inversion in the last week. I'm living in Korea and about a month ago friends, family were all besieging me to get out of here and fly back home.

Now there's a total panic in the west and things are seeming to calm down here.

Try not to panic. It's a serious situation but it won't be the end of society as we know it. Keep your wits about you, wash your hands, avoid big crowds but . . . don't freak out. Life never truly 'locked down' here and things are ticking along. No one is dancing at clubs on a Saturday night but people are eating in restaurants in small numbers and generally going about their day to day lives.

Guess I'm just trying to pass along the reassurances I've been trying to give family and friends for whom reality has hit this week. Stay safe, stay calm.

I live in NRW.
My son's school is closed.
My daughter's school (another one) is closed.
I'm doing home office.
My wife is doing home office.

I wouldn't call it "not doing much".

The only thing I'm annoyed is not available is drive-through testing.
Which, I assume, is not easy to setup.

SK has handled it (no more exponential grows, record low mortality rate).
None of the European countries managed to do it so far, hence the panic.

Things were looking dire here for a good few weeks. But a few weeks of testing, social distancing and emphasis on hygiene and wearing masks (not sure how effective that last one is really but everyone wears one) seems to have helped. I think the reality of the matter has set in for EU/US now so hopefully we'll see similar reductions in the coming weeks in places like Italy, etc.

That said I do believe Korea was almost lucky to have the initial huge breakout with the cult members. It made things very real very quickly and probably helped neuter an incremental spread.

Would Mucinex be better? He's also taking DayQuil pills for colds.
Tylenol is for fever and pain. If he has neither then there is no point. Fever is also a part of the way the body fights infections, so I'm not sure it is good to reduce the fever with drugs unless the fever is really high.
Mucinex is for phlegmy coughs iirc so not sure it would do much for a dry cough. If literally all he has is a cough, then I personally wouldn't take any medicine. Just rest. If the cough is pretty bad, maybe see a doctor and see what medicine they recommend.

True, Schools are closed, Museums, Zoos & a bunch of other things, Events are cancelled, many people who are working at offices can do home office but overall it doesn't really feel different. Streets are crowded like always, you can go shopping normally, not just grocerys. I think they need to close way more stuff because right now I think this won't really help.

Some potentially good news (actually from 2 weeks ago):
Some coronaviruses, e.g. both the SARS coronavirus of 2003 and the novel coronavirus of 2019/20 are activated by TMPRSS2 and can thus be inhibited by TMPRSS2 inhibitors.[8] "SARS-CoV-2 uses the SARS-CoV receptor ACE2 for entry and the serine protease TMPRSS2 for S protein priming. A TMPRSS2 inhibitor approved for clinical use blocked entry and might constitute a treatment option."[8]
