Nintendo Switch having a online paywall killed my interest in Nintendo games that have online

I paid for Nintendo Online once. Paid for 12 months but thoughout the year I delved into a bit if Smash and Mario Maker and checked out some NES games. Before that it was free and I played a bit of Mario Kart and Arms here and there. But PS4 is my primary console and I mainly play online games on that system. Although Switch only is a fraction of the price the time spent on that system just isn't worth me paying online for. I just can't justify paying for online for 2 systems at the same time. It's the same with Netflix, Disney Plus and etc I would only keep one service. I don't like having direct debits on multiple services.

So I picked up my Switch the other month to play a bit of Mario Kart only to realise I don't have online so the game is useless to me. Then realised Mario Maker 2, Smash Bros, Splatoon w I'd have the same issue If i wanted to replay those games for online multiplayer. So I've decided I may just resell these games. I remember when Pokémon released I though to myself I would have picked this up if I didn't have to pay for online as well as Animal Crossing. It's a shame I guess Switch will be my single player indie games console and the occasional singleplayer Switch games exclusive like Zelda.

What time is it?
I paid for the first year, got the second year "free" via Twitch/Prime and then added a year via a Game/Bundle (Mario Maker or maybe Luigi's Mansion which discounted it...I think?). It's been worth it for Tetris 99 for me as it is fairly inexpensive. I do play the occasional round of Mario Kart and Splatoon 2.

I think you got it wrong OP. It's not because of the paywall. It's simply because Switch's online infrastructure sucks ass.
Yeah, it's bad and often the games that do have online don't even have party systems and stuff. It's incredible that they charge for this...but hey! You get "free" 30 year old roms! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I hate all of the online paywall taxes, but at least when you get Live or PS+ for really cheap somewhere, there's a plethora of extremely modern online features and games to play online.

What I will say I hate about Nintendo Online is that there are all these classic games to play two player with, and yet we can’t even fucking play them with our anyone unless

A) You send your 10-digit friend request to someone, and they accept
B) They have to be playing the exact same game as you at the same time
C) There are no invites to send unless -B- requirement is met
D) No way to interact unless you have their phone number

Such a poor product. They need to be berated for such indecent efforts in that area. It would be comical but they are charging people for this. The online is severely lacking. Some games only have half of what you want / what you would expect even for online such as Super Mario Party

I love Nintendo, but it’s disgraceful and embarrassing their online

Normally, I'd agree with you. But Nintendo has really brought the big guns in terms of extra value for price with the inclusion of 1-3 NES titles every 3 months for Nintendo Online subscribers.

Gamepass is amazing value, but it pales in comparison to this deal and you can really see the respect and reverence Nintendo gives to its untouchable backlog of content.

I was a Splatoon 2 fanatic but this paywall(even though small) and the lack of save backups made me stop playing all together. Why would I pay for cloud saves when the game I played the most can't be backed up?

Once we get N64 and Gamecube titles to play I will agree. NES and SNES titles are really cool, but how many of them are games we play just to kill time tbh? They could be a lot more selective with their choices
and bring in more worthwhile games

Why is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars available to play?

same. especially since their service is absolutely atrocious.
it's worse than the PSN on PS3 was, and that's saying something... because the PS3's online features were barely any better than the OG Xbox... if even that since the og Xbox had a chat function while the PS3 didn't, so...

even the Wii U felt like it had a more robust online service tbh.

I'd feel a whole lot better about it if their virtual console stuff included N64 and the overall library was about 10x the size.

I'm used to paywalls at this point, so that in and of itself doesn't bother me. What does bother me though, is that even if the current service were free I still think it would be sub par.

Worth it for me. my friends and I hop on smash once a week or so.

now if it were $60 like the PS4/xbo then yeah, I would agree it’s a dealbreaker.

Had a few free months of it with my "twitch prime" account, whatever that is. Cancelled immediately after it ended, and I won't support such a shitty infrastructure. I agree OP.

While I hope for some improvements, it’s a great deal. Under $2 a month to have cloud backups and access to all those NES and SNES games. I also love Smash online too much to give it up, and play a game of Catan almost every night.

Eh if there’s a game you enjoy online for, $20/year isn’t really anything. I remember when they were introducing that and the Splatoon community was all doom and gloom saying the game would be a ghost town. Never saw any drop in activity. I personally don’t experience many connection issues either but I only play docked with a wired connection so I know that’s a big part of it.

Yeah, the online capabilities really aren't good enough in their current state to charge money. The lower price doesn't make it much better either.

I had a free year from that Twitch Prime offer a while back. Barely used the online in that time. I'm not a Smash or Platoon fan and the only Switch game that I really get competitive with online is Mario Kart. I only just renewed it now using my gold coins because I still have a game voucher to redeem yet before the end of the month. And that's a whole other gripe I have with Nintendo. I didn't realize that the voucher not only has to be purchased with Nintendo Online, but also can only be redeemed with it. Not even a free trial will work. Had I known about that and that they would take so fucking long to announce and put preorders up for games releasing this fall, then I wouldn't have bothered. That these vouchers just expire is also complete bullshit, too. I bet they don't even have the decency to warn people who still have them that their vouchers are about to expire.

I really hate the way Nintendo handles online. They have no business charging for that turd

I wouldn't play it enough to justify the paywall, so I haven't bothered. But I'm sitting on this 7 day trial, one day...

I pay for online just so that my gf can play tetris 99 once a month.

Smash netcode is trash, mario kart online is trash, splatoon 2 is full of 頑張って. I hate playing my switch online.

I’d pay more money for a better decent sized library of retro Nintendo games up through the Gamecube. This painfully slow drip feed of NES/SNES games seems quaint compared to how even MS and sometimes Sony are leveraging their old games. Hell MS will even be like “here have a free old game forever, we don’t care”.

Yea Nintendo gamers had the chance to refuse to pay for online like PC gamers did to Microsoft but they decided instead to bend over and take it. The funny thing is when people say, b-but its only $20...LOL like do you actually expect them not to increase the price down the road?

I expect I won't care because I am not poor.

None of online services are worth it for the online alone.

There isn't a single Switch game I want to play online, but it's worth $20 bucks a year for the NES/SNES stuff, even with a limited library. Look and perform great on a modern TV, save states, rewind, etc.

Like some have said, Tetris 99 is worth it for me. There are also several discounts available from time to time. Just last week it was €15 on cd keys and via Twitch I had a whole free year.

I've had the family account since last Christmas so the wife and I could play against friends in Mario Kart, which we've done now, and I see zero reason to renew.

It might be the cheapest out there, and objectively not a lot of money, but it's still obviously better to not spend money when you don't have to, and I've learnt I sure as hell don't have to have what Nintendo is offering here.

I resisted for a while and finally subbed so I could visit/trade stuff on my little sister's AC island. Poked at the SNES/NES stuff. I like the save state/rewind functionality, especially since I don't have the sadomasochistic gaming itch I used to have. We could do much worse for $20 annually. The bigger thing here is the freaking dragon's horde of games Nintendo could release that would find a great home on the Switch, never mind their crappy online infrastructure.
