He made playstation successful in Europe and supported all European studios, but, he seems more of a business guy than former presidents. I don't trust him but let's see. His touch will be clear in few years eventhough he relatively old and may retire soon.

My appreciation is that he may be a business guy but he doesn’t try to hog the spotlight all the time. Unlike other figures in that position.

I'm indifferent. He honestly did his job getting The Ascent, The Medium, Scorn, and Stalker exclusive to Xbox.
more importantly,
microsoft with xbox had 2 machines that were the most powerful available consoles, og xbox and 360.
then matrick and copy-wii happened.
now phil, in the short duration of three years is the man behind 2 machines that are the most powerful available consoles, scorpio and series X.
I like this because I prefer a powerful console to micromanaging my pc. after so many years you get bored.

he also is the man behind xbox now having 15 first party studios cooking

He talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

He's the master of spin and undeniably charismatic, but it's been far too long now without any pay off or obvious improvements in Xbox gaming for me to believe anything he says anymore.

Under his leadership, Xbox has lost any real identity, has no clear goals beyond sucking as much cash out of it's audience as possible, and has thrown so many different ideas out there that they've begun actively contradicting themselves.

He's the gaming industry's dodgy used car salesman.

He's a manipulative, sneaky guy, who is trying to play the "good guy" character. When I see a movie I know that I'm seeing fiction, but he's a real person with a real role in the indistry. It's like seeing a sneaky politician lol.
The work of the division is better that before and now I can feel like there's a vision behind it. But I don't like him at all, he's wearing a mask.

He's doing a pretty good job.
I like him as a person but I don't think I like where Xbox is going

Full disclaimer: If Halo Infinite, Hellblade 2, and some other games looked bananas visually and showed it during gameplay then I might have a different opinion

What missteps has he made?

As I see it, his only mistake was not buying studios in 2016, but I doubt he was given the green light back then.

As I said, he made successful playstation games from Europe studios and he is probably good at managing AAA game studios. He brought all his European friends and took over SIE ( the Guerrilla guy). He may really do a good job.
The new SIE studios president Hermann Hulst is also good. He was already transitioning into his new jod for more than 3 years as evident from God of War documentry. He was all over SSM studio during GOW development.

I think the better question would be, where do you think Xbox would be currently if it wasn't for Phil's initiatives.

Would they have bought all the studios? Would Gamepass exist? Would the X1X even be a thing? Would there be a next gen?

I'm of the belief that Xbox could have very well went the way of SEGA Dreamcast if it wasn't for Phil's ideas.

After inheriting the dumpster fire left by Marrtick I think he's doing great.
I appreciate his attitude towards console warring and the place of GamePass driven Xbox in the general gaming landscape he's aiming for.
All the effort put into resurrecting first party should give us plenty of reasons to get excited mid-gen.

Honestly, I don’t know and I don’t think any of us do.

A lot of people seems to absolve him of the responsibilities he had during the XBO launch when he was the head of Xbox Studios. The lack of first party studios, the emphasis on Kinect games, mismanagement of Rare etc. all lead to the deficiency found at the launch.

He was given a chance, 6 years to be exact and to his name the only thing that came out positively of it were GP and X1X.

Look if it were just that, I can look past it but I can’t stand being told one thing and doing another. Am I supposed to trust someone who lies to my face?

If I can compare him to someone then probably it’ll be Sean Murray from Hello games. Director of No Man’s Sky. Lies excessively but does have a redemption arc.

Hardware isn't everything and they're working hard on software. They still have a lot of work to do, if they weren't so obsessed with having more powerful hardware they'd probably be in better shape.

Games matter, we need more of them.

Absolutely based guy. Very chill and open. No shady business like Jim Ryan. Loves high framerates. Brought Halo and Forza to PC. Can't quite figure out how to record a Direct yet, but nobody does.

In my opinion he is busy driving Xbox off a cliff.

When he is on stage I half expect him to pull back a latex mask and reveal he was Shuhei Yoshida all along, systematically destroying Xbox from the inside.

Thinking about it, I have never seen them together....

Like I said its a dice roll, with Playstation I never have to worry about it because 99% of the time it will get the game.
Nobody is trying to persuade you that all Japanese games are on Xbox, or to buy an Xbox at all cost. Buy a PS if this suits you better.

Accessing to all Japanese games is not the top priority for everyone, and Xbox Japanese offerings have been pretty good lately and I wish to see them keep this level of commitment.

No I understand that but as fan of Japanese games if someone ask me if Phil or Microsoft did good job of selling me on their next console I would have to say no.

But then again maybe I’m just not their target audience.

I think he's doing a great job so far. He's turning Xbox around in a big way.

The hardware is excellent, I love my 1X & my Elite V2 controller is the best I've ever held. The services are excellent, Game Pass is insane value. Backwards compatibility is in great shape. Even little things like automatic cloud back-up for my save files is a nice touch.

Software was the weakest link. I've always enjoyed Crackdown, Fable, Forza, Gears & Halo, but outside of FH4 & Gears 5, this gen has been average when it comes to exclusive titles, imo. Quantum Break & Sunset Overdrive were really good. I loved ReCore, but it was an AA game & needed something more to elevate it to the top level. Ori & Sea of Thieves aren't my thing. That's not much, for an entire console generation.

The good news is that Phil Spencer has also overseen the biggest growth in Xbox first-party history. They now have an impressive stable of talented developers who will bring a diverse range of games to the Series X. That's not even up for debate. We've already seen a first look at what's to come. Avowed (Obsidian), Everwild (Rare), Fable reboot (Playground), Hellblade 2 (Ninja Theory). There's going to be more, these things just take time. Next gen could be one of the best in Xbox history.

So yeah, I think Phil's done a great job so far & the future looks bright for Xbox gaming. I could be wrong, of course, but that's how I see it.

This is what indoctrination into the Phil cult looks like.

Talks way too much and so far has failed miserably in the most important thing, producing great games. I don't like his vision for gaming that amounts to pretty much cheap games that try to capture the attention of a broader audience not that into console gaming.

Also, he and his PR team are way too involved with the most rabid Xbox fans.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
He is trying, but at this point I am skeptical of his competence as the leader of Xbox. Obviously GamePass is great, but it isn’t my cup of tea. I want good AAA experiences and Phil is worse than Don Mattrick in that regard.

Once the xbox series x is released he will have been in charge of two releases that are the most powerful consoles so xbox fans should be much happier with him than without him.

I like some of what Xbox has done the last several years, but don't like all of it.

Also not convinced they will turn it all around fast enough to not be basically killed by PS5; you can buy all the studios you want and go on a hiring spree it was too late to actually make anything impressive for the start of this gen and they are going to have a real hard time getting momentum against Sony.

And I also think they've sold their leadership too much on xCloud taking off. 5 years from now when it's barely made a dent in increasing their userbase the board of directors is gonna wonder why the fuck they invested so much in a brand that is basically failing. The answer is gonna be "Well ONE BILLLLION gamers.. with xCloud!" and they'll ask the question again.
I like to think that you got it a bit backwards, it's the other MS leadership telling Xbox that they need to use Azure with the rest of the company because that is the future and one their biggest core businesses now. So they sold the idea of using Azure via Mixer until they got Xcloud off the ground.

Any concrete examples you can point to? Also, that's every company trying to get as much money as it can.

So the purchasing of game studios like Ninja Theory or having Playground Games bring back Fable aren't positive things? You aren't giving Phil credit for a lot of things, I feel.

Even the things you do mention are minimized. X1X is a fantastic console, the most powerful and smartly engineered console ever. To have it do 4k 60 fps on ANY game is a testament to the hardware and the developers given the state of it's CPU. Gamepass is the most valuable service in gaming...ever. These are no small feats.

He just screwed all my thoughts on Xbox one by one. I was a customer before Xbone, but over time, destroying that Exclusive Game mentality was big middle finger. The poor quality of the new games still continues in the same way also. Renting games, gamepass like shits are nothing for me. There is no reason to get Xbox console thanks to Spencer.

Gamepass is an option.
If you’re a PC gamer and prefer that, then that makes sense.

Nope.

Gamepass is his only strategy. That system even got ahead of Xbox for Spencer now. So, I'm criticizing that & saying it means nothing to me.

You’re a PC gamer as well, right?

Edit: I never understand fellow console only gamers being mad about games going to PC. Especially cross play games that really increase the population, such as Sea of Thieves.

Not a fan, I look past backwards compatibility and a subscription service and see more negative than positive.

The newer content in particular has been more disappointing than positive IMHO. Watching that showcase and seeing how many games are still a long way out, i ask what has been going on there for the last few years particularly when their first party , which he finally acknowledged last year in a interview needs improving, hasn’t seen a major release since Gears 5.

I knew the “Wait till E3” retort from some would end up becoming a farce, it was getting ridiculous the longer it carried on.

I know a fair number of you will disagree , despite RROD and some tepid releases such as Too Human and Vampire Rain, Peter Moore’s era was was a fair bit better than this guys and Mattricks.

I think he’s doing a good job with what he is offered to him. I think you can only go so far with Microsoft.

The Xbox brand feels like Manchester United in football: notable achievements in the past, lots of money, but little strength to face against contemporary behemoths.

I think this gen will make or break for Xbox

Been a gamer for 32 years now and the last three years (since getting One X) have been the most fun button mashing experiences of my life. If he is responsible for that, then sure, more power to the guy.

Really? With the new games or the old games?

I think he's done a good job changing the focus back to gamers, but I don't feel like he's nailed the actual games. There are very few must-buy IPs on Xbox; Playstation still seems like the place to play the best games. Game Pass is an awesome value; if he could build up the profile of top tier games he would begin a reign of terror and dominance over the industry the likes of which we have not seen in many a year.
