Was meant to be 500 and they dropped it to 499. There. Done.

Maybe the model with Drive would come with a game?

That could make for a $100 difference?

who knows really?

Business decisions of this scale doesn't work like this. If Sony was flexible with pricing, then they would've had all the different scenarios mapped out already. This article makes it seem like Xbox's pricing caught them by surprise and now Sony is scrambling for plan B. Sony likely already had plan B, C, D, etc ready to go depending on what MS does.

i cant see $399 unless they are willing to take utterly massive losses, which they are in no position to even need to.

if the xsx is taking a loss at $499 and the ps5 has a cutting edge proprietary SSD and a super hot gpu that requires special cooling, then i seriously doubt the PS5 cost less than a xsx to build. in fact it probably cost more despite the xsx having the costlier GPU.

its clear Sony got caught off guard by the 12 tflops and redesigned the ps5 to have variable clocks just so they could close the gap on paper. this cost them a fortune and the price will reflect it
Holy shit, someone who isn't dreaming and speaks sense. Anyone thinking a PS5 will launch at $399 is beyond deluded. That SSD is going to screw them over good on pricing because they went for such a cutting edge version. Also, no a discdrive isn't going to knock $100 off the top either, $50 at best.

I can see it being $499 and $550.

They will hit 399 for digital, not because it won't sell out for months at a higher price but because it will give the platform cannonball momentum for the next few years.

GameReactor is nordic region and I'm guessing this is from Tidux. I wouldn't put too much faith in the overall rumor.

$50 difference?

What is the point with having two models then?
For people that want to, or already have, gone full digital.
With the amount of bulk buying Sony will do for something like this, they probably get the drives for like $20 or something stupid like that. Why would the difference be $100?.

Well, this is what they HAVE to do to keep momentum going. Whether or not this is bollocks or not we shall see.

A $399 diskless would be very aggressive! since thats the one I want I would love for it to be true. lol but I am not holding my breath.

If the strategy is to push digital adoption then the $100 is going it be more enticing.

You have to consider the increase in their take from digital sales and cutting out used game sales and lending of games. They can take a hit of anything less than 100, especially on the digital.

This is flat out false. Stop spreading this nonsense.

Eh, even amateur nerds like ourselves managed to guess the Xbox prices. I don't see Sony changing anything because of this. But they probably do wish that too went with two power tiers at this point.

They would likely be taking a massive loss at $399
It's okay for them to take a big loss on the digital edition since they will be able to quickly make back the money as they will be the sole source for game purchasing and they make a lot more money from a game sold on PSN than a physical copy from a store.

Well the disk version is fugly, so if you are a digital only consumer already, you get the marginally better looking console and save $50.

Agreed price has been know internally for months, things don't change overnight, advertisement etc has to be ready in advance, i dare say both MS and Sony have known what each other have been doing price wise for months too. No blindsiding, just MS was ready to announce and Sony arent quite ready yet, probably deciding what games are definitely ready for launch, they don't want another DriveClub debacle!

I don't beleive this. I mean 499 is on the internet like forever, they can't be completely surprised by that and they 100% already have plans A-F for everything Micorosft could do.

Surely they were never thinking about 599 anyways...

I expected it honestly. Remember, minimum wage was WAY lower when the PS4 launched. Hell, in my area Chick Fil A pays people 20 bucks to fry chicken.

I say the only option is to release the digital version at $199, this way even if I don't work I'll at least be able to buy it!

Could you imagine the mad dash to get one of they did this? That's just straight up price warring at that point lol

mmmmh... I always thought that PS5 would have been 399/499 (All Digital/With disc).

Can't see them changing plans on the fly.

Exactly, they likely submitted multiple budgets to Japan and they were waiting to see which one to go with, ms announcement will now make it easier fir them to pick the best one if they have not already done so.
Companies do this all the time, submit multiple models to senior management and wait until september, october, some cases november to move forward with the model that fits better.

When i worked retail management i would create and submit 3 models for the coming year, i would usually start in June.
One model we grow, one model we stay flat, and the other model we take some loses.
Once summited the cfo and his/her teams would review, watch the market trends and let us know by october what model they are going to go with.
Managed budgets for 20 years across 4 different employers snd they all did the same shit.
