Ps5 the big winner this week. Fantastic to see some stock finally arriving. Hopefully that wasn't a once off.

PS5 will have shipped a similar number to Japan as they had ps4's by it's launch back in 2014. Interesting stat.

Irrelevant? By what metric?
AFAIK, it's the second largest market.
lol it's the third biggest market by game revenue after China and the US.

clearly you did enough to click on the thread and then complain about them
also bigger market than most other individual countries and good data is provided weekly
Look at the top 10 games, all those are played by 8-12 year olds. Japan is a very niche country, they like very weird stuff, they like Nintendo and other kids' games, it fascinates them, that's why both Microsoft and Sony are past caring about their market, it's irrelevant to the rest of the western world.

Japanese games are very relevant in the rest of Asia, as South Korea, Taiwan, China and Singapore follow the same trends observed in Japan.
So the market is indeed extremly relevant for Japanese 3rd Parties and Asian gaming companies, Square Enix for example get 50% of their World Wide sales in Japan - even though Japan is only 15% of the Global Video game market.

Anyways amazing week for Momotaro, already the 3rd Best Selling game on the PS4/Switch

Top 10 3rd Party Games PS4/NSW
  1. [PS4] Monster Hunter: World (Capcom) - 2.564.928
  2. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft) - 1.786.687
  3. [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu (Konami) - 1.710.394
  4. [PS4] Dragon Quest XI (Square Enix) - 1.368.698
  5. [PS4] Final Fantasy XV (Square Enix) - 1.042.951
  6. [PS4] Final Fantasy VII Remake (Square Enix) - 932.821
  7. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III (Square Enix) - 861.226
  8. [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Take Two) - 708.610
  9. [NSW] Dragon Quest XI S (Square Enix) - 596.677*
  10. [NSW] Fishing Spirits (Bandai Namco) - 562.051*
PS4 TOTAL: 7.479.234
NSW TOTAL: 4.655.809

Switch's Top performing 3rd Party games are starting to catch up to the PS4,

By the mid-April Monster Hunter Rise should be the Top Selling 3rd Party game on the PS4/NSW.

Momotaro is looking like it will overtake Minecraft in one or two weeks. Eventually it will finish above Monster Hunter: World. The game is already the second best selling game of all time for Konami in Japan.

Top 3 Konami All Time
  1. [GB] Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4 (2000) - 2.210.162
  2. [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu (2020) - 1.710.394
  3. [GB] Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (1998) - 1.522.968
Pretty amazing performance overall, it's already almost caught up with Super Mario Party which was the game I compared it to pre-launch. It's looking very likely that lifetime it will join the 3 million club! A very exclusive club for 3rd Parties which I believe only Capcom & Level-5 have been able to achieve in the past decade via a single SKU. The last Square Enix game that surpassed 3 million on a single platform was Dragon Quest IX in 2009 on the DS:

2008-2020 Three Million+ Club
  1. [PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (2010) - 4.840.930
  2. [DS] Dragon Quest IX (2009) - 4.402.263
  3. [PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (2008) - 4.226.265
  4. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 (2013) - 3.591.334
  5. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2 (2014) - 3.169.858

The majority of games in this week's Japan top 10 are also appearing in the top 10/20 of other countries. The only game in this thread which is Japan specific is Momotaro.

Top Selling Switch Evergreens Q1:
  1. Smash Ultimate (2019) - 631.721
  2. Pokemon Sword / Shield (2020) - 554.390
  3. Momotaro Dentetsu (2021) - 477.371
  4. Splatoon 2 (2018) - 426.816
So with 9 Weeks to go Momotaro needs just 154.350 to become the best selling evergreen in Q1, it's very likely we are looking at over 800K physical sales this quarter, taking the game beyond 2 million physical fairly easily.

Betting time:

If Switch sells 102,000 next week, it will be ahead of the 3DS launch aligned. Who thinks it will make it?

I think it won't but it will be quite close (around 95,000).

Does anyone even care about Japan’s sales numbers? Their market is irrelevant these days

Ignorant in every sense of the word.

It's irrelevant because Nintendo is irrelevant.

If Sony or anyone else were doing this well in Japan, they'd be singing a different tune..
It depends. If Sony was doing this well in japan by releasing Nintendo type games I'd be devastated. I moved on from those games when I was about 10 or 11. Maybe even younger. Sony's approach of making more mature games suits me perfectly. If they means less sales in japan but more elsewhere then happy days.

But tbh with you even if the ps5 had the switch games from Nintendo as exclusives it wouldn't even sell half the switch sales because it's not a portable or a hybrid. It's a traditional home console, and for that category it's the top dog by far in japan. (see xbox sales for comparison, or wii u, gamecube sales for when Nintendo tried to compete here head on).

It's weird to think people act like 3ds wasn't doing that great when in reality it sold pretty much the exact same as switch so far. And unlike switch it had the wii u taking lots of Nintendos support away from it.

You're a teenager (or an adult still in his teenager phase) literally afraid of anything cute and colorful because you believe those things are so "unmanly". Functioning adults don't really care about the art design that much as long as the games are fun to play in the end.

It's not about being afraid of anything cute or colorful. It's just that once you get older, you grow out of those things that's all. There is art design and then there is that kind of rubbish(like your avatar) where everything is over exaggerated, super colorful, big eyes etc. But hey, that's what sells Big in Japan - colourful, oversaturated, cute, schoolgirls, if that's your thing, fine by me.

I'm sorry but you have very shallow and surface level idea of whats consider as "mature".

Honestly, this just shows how little relevance sales in Japan has to the overall picture.

Also, PS5 is still sold out in Japan too. It isn't like they are sitting unsold on store shelves there either.
Nintendo Switch US ltd at the end of December - 26.03M
Nintendo Switch Japan ltd - 18.1M

3DS did do well but peaked very early on (it's 2nd calendar year) whereas Switch is in its 5th year and sales are still going up. Its fascinating to see the different sales curves they are following.

This is probably the least intelligent comment in this week on Gaf.

Wait until the Breath of the Wild sequel releases. It's going to jump again.

The Switch is really Nintendo finding it's true place in the market. Their games have always catered well to portable gaming with players able to easily accomplish something even if they only have a few minutes to spare. 15 minutes will get you some moons in Mario Odyssey, a few matches on Smash, find a Korok or stumble across something in Zelda, do a championship in Mario Kart, etc.

I hope they stick to this formula going forward (but also fix the joycons).

Yes, Switch is much bigger (per capita) in Japan. Their society has pretty much moved to exclusively mobile and handheld games.

PS5 is still the fastest selling console worldwide, even if Sony isn't focusing much on Japan. It IS still sold out everywhere in Japan (just like everywhere else in the world).
