Forget backlog - as a new Game Pass subscriber, I have a FRONT log. How do you approach this?

The first step is to realize that just because a game is there does not mean you have to play it.

Second step, think of a series you liked when you previously had an Xbox. Start there.

If you can't think of a series you previously liked then pick one of the big three MS titles, Forza, Halo or Gears and jump in.

If those don't work, load up Flight Simulator and not crash planes.

Keep tabs on what's leaving soon and prioritize those. Once a game's announced to be leaving, you only have a few weeks before it's gone.

Don't worry, the games are in rotation... So they just go if you don't play them they just go.

That's why it makes no sense for a lot of people:
1 - If you like a limited amount of games or pend a significant amount of time finishing a specific game the service makes no sense financially
2 - Games come and go, so don't plan on "having" a game whenever you get to it

This means, play what you want now, but don't stick to it more than a couple of days, even if you really like the game you have to change so you get the most out of your subscription. Also, you need to be willing to "choose" among games you would not have had in a collection you made.

So have fun!

Cringe thread.
You don’t value your time therefore it is worthless and you will play any old shit just because you paid 10 a month for the access to it.

It’s a false economy.

Like paying 10 for 10 McDonald’s cheese burgers
Vs
10 for one prime fillet steak
Imagine being this upset about a service that doesn't affect you in any way whatsoever.

Truly sad.

There now you got the attention you so obviously are crying out for.

I feel you. That's probably my main issue with GP. I feel like I have to play it to recoup the cost over the year, and sometimes there's just not anything there I want to play. Of course I have pretty eclectic gaming tastes, so I can't always find something. I actually prefer to buy what I want since I don't play that much over the year. My kids, on the other-hand, play it way more than I do. Even then they have their moments where they are looking for things to play. I know I'm probably in the minority here.

Okay, hopefully I get used to this.

But I just picked up a Series X this week, first time on Xbox since 2013. I love my PS5, but I'm used to buying a bunch of games on sale, prioritizing which ones I want to play, and then taking deep dives into Sony exclusives - which never feels like I'm short-changing other games, since Sony's output is on such another level.

But now, with Game Pass, I'm bombarded with insane quality. I don't think much is at Sony's level, either, so I can't automatically place it above the high-quality stuff that is there. I'm swimming in content, but spinning, too.

How do you guys handle this? Do you skip around from game to game? Do you laser-focus on one?

Halp.
Dont forget that EA games come to GP about 9 months later.

EA games are heavily skewed to day one temptation since their games are heavy into shooters and sports. But if you dont give a shit about jumping in early to play EA games, just wait it out. That Mass Effect Legendary game just got added to GP a few weeks ago. Why buy anything EA when it comes to GP. Only time to buy is if you have to jump into one of their shooters or sports games for MP and league play so you dont get left out.

I pay for it , so in a way it does effect me.
I’m interested in the quality offering and it’s low.

🤔

I just downloaded and am trying....(inhale):

Octopath Traveler
Halo Infinite
Forza Horizon 5
Mass Effect Legendary
Sea of Thieves
Fallout New Vegas
Master Chief Collection
Stardew Valley

And a couple more I can't even remember. The quality is absolutely there.

In my opinion the best game on that list is Halo 3.

Horizon 5 is half decent also.

Compared with say the 10 upgrade for the Uncharted 4 upgrade it’s frankly not even close and I’m likely to get more enjoyment out out of one game for the monthly price of GP and all those listed in your comment.

It’s just my opinion mind. But I do think I’m general moving forward we’ll see the quality wane I’m favour of quick wins and instant gratification as there is a throw away quality to anything you play on GP due to the Low initial investment.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I pick 1 game at a time from the GP list and just focus on that. If I start juggling games it'll probably drive me crazy owing to the variety of content on game pass.

I've been doing all my gaming on Game Pass. Just straight up bathing in it. Recently finished The Outer Worlds and now more than half way done with Death's Door.

Here's what I've played from Game Pass (not all finished) since picking up a Series X.
  • Death's Door
  • The Outer Worlds
  • Donut County
  • Halo Infinite
  • The Pedestrian
  • The Long Dark
  • Back 4 Blood
  • Firewatch
  • Generation Zero
  • Townscaper
  • The Matrix Awakens (not even sure if this counts)
  • DEEEER Simulator
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Tetris Effect: Connected
  • Exo One
  • Dirt 5
  • Backbone
  • Sable
  • Control
  • Hades
  • Psychonauts 2 (and the first)
  • Twelve Minutes
  • The Ascent
  • art of rally
  • Katamari Damacy REROLL
  • Hotshot Racing
  • Gang Beast
  • Going Under
  • A Way Out
  • Star Renegades
  • Xeno Crisis
I really don't get people's issues with Game Pass. It's fantastic and I've long since got my money's worth. Also anyone complaining about quality of titles is insane. That is all.

just focus on 1 at a time and mix it up. if you just played a massive open world game that is long as heck, than play a much shorter game after that. otherwise you might burn yourself out and end up not wanting to play anything.

OP,

Dont forget that to get the most of the games, any game labeled Series X in the game icon is optimized for it. So if it's a priority game to play, make sure to have it on the SSD. That's the only way to get super fast load times, RT and whatever boosts.

If youre SSD is filling up and you got more games to download, put your low priority games on any HDD you might be attaching to the system. I believe these games will run at (I might be wrong) Xbox One X settings at best.

Funny thread, but this is a real reply. Don't download everything that comes out, especially if it has a streaming option. Stream it for 30 minutes, download if you like what you're playing. Not only do you not have the SSD capacity for a fraction of what GP offers, you don't have the time in the day to play everything.

Find something you like, play it to your heart's content, find something else you like, welcome to Game Pass. Above all else, take risks on things you specifically think you won't like. The only thing you might waste is time.

Edit - For example, I thought Graveyard Keeper was just a Stardew Valley clone, 6 months later I was still in pretty deep. I have bought the game and all expansions on both Xbox and Switch once it left the service.

It all interests me.

There’s no way “every” game interests you lol.

So just curate a list of games you want to play and play them. Maybe make a list preferencing the genres you’re in the mood for? Personally, some days I’m in the mood for hack ‘n slash, while others I may sit with a strategy game.

There’s not enough time in the world to play every game in its catalog, so I’d say be divisive when trying to choose a game you’ll get the most enjoyment out of.

Take your time, good games age well. Who says you have to approach anything..?

I dont understand the mentality. Gaming is meant to be relaxing, comforting and enjoyable, so why rush to get through games..? :messenger_confused:

I don't bounce as much as I thought I would but I definitely have done. Sorry CrisTale and Astria Ascending, I am not sure if I am ever going back to you.

I tend to try and have two games on the go. One for remote play and one for couch play. I typically prioritise new games on the service and if the games are getting buzz when they are leaving, I end up buying those for later down the road.

Imagine thinking paying 10 bucks for a 4K 30fps / 1440p 60fps patch to a game you already own is better value than all the games added to GP this month.

And then talking about low value.

20 years ago, I played game after game after game of Halo online and the only thing that could break me away was Starcraft.

Now, Halo is back and every time I try to start a Gamepass title, I never come back to it, I just play Halo again.

Life.

Too many people suffer from sunk-cost fallacy. When you spend $60+ on a single experience, it's hard not to. Especially when that cost is hours of labor. Personally, I believe it's better to accept the loss and try again with the outcome that when you do spend your time with a game, it will be much more enjoyable than the one you force yourself to stick with.

Your time is limited not theirs, don't waste it just because you feel you need to recoup value.

You'll be much happier overall if you were to salvage what cost and time you can and move on.

With Gamepass that's easy. As soon as you feel any twinge of disinterest, check out something else. If you are really interested, you won't even need to think of it and will be interested in returning. At least they make it easy to see what's leaving soon so you can try those titles out first.

Don't sleep on the cloud gaming either. Pop in if it's available and try the game out before you commit to downloading it.
I do kind of do that. The problem is I have very limited hours to play and so I feel like those hours are spent’ checking out’ many games on GP. Each of which I might only spend a couple of hours on before I move on to the next.

It reminds me a bit of having tens of thousands of games on a retro device playing emulators. It’s really hard for anything to stick. Even the big games. Like I felt I moved on from halo after just five hours despite knowing full well there’sa lot more to it than I’d seen.

Because of GP, i haven’t been able to get into anything for more than a few hours and when I try…. ‘Oh shit. Game X is leaving GP, I better check it or quickly before it goes!’

…. Maybe I should speak to a Dr…. :D

What is your understanding of value.
Quantity does not trump quality.

I don’t think it’s an economy thing thing tbh. GP is pretty cheap for what you get. And I don’t feel I have to watch EVERYTHING on Netflix. I think for me at least, I feel like I want to check out a little bit of the mechanics and systems and story and game world and characters of a game before it goes.

Ask me about my Stream Deck
Each of which I might only spend a couple of hours on before I move on to the next.
I personally have a 15 minute rule I use for everything. Books, movies, tv, games. The second I feel like something isn't worth my time or uninteresting, I look at the time. If nothing has changed to make the experience better in 15 minutes, I'm gone.

Prioritize playing 3rd party and Indie games first as these games will eventually be taken off of gamepass. The microsoft owned 1st party games will probably stay on gamepass forever so you can always go back to play those. But if there is a 3rd party or indie game you want to play that isn't published by microsoft, best get those out the way first. So play the bolded games in whatever order you see fit first.
