Cult of the Lamb launches on August 11 for Nintendo Switch, PS, XB, and PC. Pre-Purchase and Demo on Steam Now!
Cult of the Lamb is described as a mash-up between a “base builder” game and a “dungeon crawler game” – like if you scrambled Nintendo’s cosy-vibed Animal Crossing with the horror-themed The Binding of Isaac.
“Basically, you play as a little lamb character and you go and start a cult of other little animals,” says Wilton, Creative Director of Massive Monster games studio.
“You go out, find followers and bring them back to your base. Then you need to look after them – give them food, keep them happy. But then if they’re naughty, you can sacrifice them to some dark gods.”
That sounds really good lol.Alright, after playing for 5 hours and clearing the opening area (didn't die once, definitely easier than other rogulites) I can already say that this will end up being one of my faves in the genre, sitting alongside the likes of Binding of Isaac, Dead Cells, Hades, Rogue Legacy and Darkest Dungeon, it's that good.
First off, the visuals, absolutely gorgeous, the vivid colour palette popping off my OLED TV. The overall vibe reminds me most of BoI and Hollow Knight, dark and macabre while also being endearing and cute. Some of the animations literally have me laughing out loud, there is a wonderful charm to every single aspect to this game including the gibberish voices (which don't always work, hello Yooka-Laylee) that are absolutely fantastic here.
Combat feels immediately responsive and satisfying. Similar to Enter the Gungeon a dodge roll will be your one and only way to avoid damage, melee weapon on one input, magic spell on another, simple and intuitive. PS5 has great DualSense support, whether chopping down a tree or launching eldritch tentacles, really adds to the overall kinetic feeling of your actions, I love it.
One of the most important elements of any roguelite is how it handles permanent unlocks/progression. I can say right now this game might have the most unlocks and satisfying progression of any I've played in the genre. There are a ridiculous amount of things to unlock from Tarot Cards, weapons, spells, character upgrades, facilities, doctrines, rituals, decorations, blueprints and more. You're *constantly* making progress, consistently gaining access to something new, shiny and cool.
Player agency? Boy do you have a choice in what kind of cult leader you want to be but it can essentially boil down to this: do you want your followers to love you or fear you? Maybe a combination of both, the benevolent tyrant lol. There are choices to make that seem to lock you out of other ones. Example, a ritual that allows two of your followers to battle to death OR a ritual that allows you to marry two of your followers. The appeal and charm of the cutscenes/animations that come along with these choices cannot be overstated and I'm already contemplating starting another save file to see the stuff I locked myself out of.
I could write another 10 paragraphs, the whole management/sim aspect is surprisingly engaging and addictive, combining this with the traditional, combat fueled dungeon crawling is truly something unique and strangely hypnotic, it's a brilliant idea executed *perfectly*.
I'll end it with this: 1 of my followers approached me and asked me to literally feed another one of my followers shit, I obliged him and boosted his loyalty. A day later he approaches me again and asks me to do it *again* to the same follower - who still hasn't recovered - because the first time was so "hilarious". Well, I humored him but after that I put him on permanent expedition duty, going out into the wilds to gather resources for me, coming back exhausted, sleeping to recover before I send him out again, karma's a bitch.

This looks pretty damn cool, but I'm getting my ass kicked by bills currently
I'll hopefully grab this in the future
My electric for a single bedroom flat is now £100 a month :l (it's only me and my partner living there)Man, same..bill are killing me..hoping to pick it up soon.
Kinda the same. Was ready to buy, but reading quite a few reviews mentioning how easy the dungeons are & how shallow the combat is put me off.
