Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking terrible PC ports and their motherfucking stuttering!

What you’re describing was the turning point for me to go back to a console as my primary gaming machine - specifically the crashes - the number of which was just fucking insane. The average number of crashes for a new game on PlayStation or Nintendo was anywhere from 0 to 1 and for any equivalent game on PC it was like 4-5. I don’t know if I have no tolerance for it but it just made me fucking furious when it would happen and I lost progress and I always thought to myself “I paid more for this kind of experience.”

PC is still unmatched for indies though.

It's such a shit situation to be in. I love my PC and it will remain to be my main and favourite gaming platform. Let's be real though, I do have all the consoles too and ultimately I play "games" not "systems".

Is it frustrating having such a powerful machine I spent so much money on just to have it perform worse than my PS5 / Series in a load of current games? Yeah for sure, but at least the consoles aren't awful this time round like last gen.

I've been saying it for a while that these consoles hit such a sweet spot for price / performance that I don't even see it necessary for people to go PC right now. Especially considering the price of GPU's and this shader compilation stutter phase we're going through.

Hopefully things go back to normal, but being a PC only player must be frustrating as fuck right now.

I still don't understand why it can't do this before you launch a game.
What would be needed hardware wise to solve the issue?
You can, but unless you are a big developer like Sony's first party teams, etc where you can use run-time compiling with temporary caching for fast iterative development on fixed PC hardware in development, and then thoroughly test for weeks again - after going gold - with a full launch compile option you are introducing a slow issue into development, and one that might not consistently produce bugs because the bug is a side effect of pre-compiling at that stage.

For smaller devs they can probably launch, wait for user bug report issues and then add the feature as optional with some light testing, knowing it isn't going to throw big security issues for hacks, because post launch is for catching large patch issues

What sucks about the state of PC gaming now is it has nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with questionable support.

Its hard to come by a publisher that has strong PC ports or versions of big AAA titles, we are seeing it get a bit better, but its a numbers game.

Because the majority of that big AAA software sells better on consoles, that is where the support focuses and PC becomes this afterthought and gamble.

Will it have a good version? Who the fucks knows lol We always get the inevitable "how is the PC version" when rarely is anyone asking about the PS5 or Series X version or something, we know that shit is going to be rock solid cause 99.9% of the time that is where they focused their energy.

I do hope things change as I still love PC gaming, but we literally still have folks fucking out here releasing games with shit DRM....

Calisto isnt even good.
You could tell it was trash by the latest gameplay vids way back at gamescom. Over hyped junk.
Not worth getting worked up over.
Should have waited for it to hit 10 bucks in a month or 2 and the stuttering will be fixed by then.

Get a PS5 and a Switch OLED. Problem solved.
I have a PS5 and still wouldn't get rid of my PC for it.

Everything on switch can literally be played on PC or Steam Deck with better everything (for free)

This is a horrible take.

Then again, I rarely buy games day 1 and Ragnarok was the exception to the rule just because I was able to get a copy a week early lol.

These threads are hilarious to me. I have finished 24 games this year on PC. Amount of problems? Zero.

Admittedly, I am not always playing games day one, since very few games interest me enough to want to pay 60 euros for them and I have a big backlog.

Here they are from most recently finished. The number behing "PC" is my rating of them, with date when I finished them.
They all worked without any issues on my PC.

You will need to do this every time you update your drivers. For the mass public that set it to automatic this could mean, on medicore hardware / non-SSD / bad (threads unused) launch params, couple hours or more wait time repeatedly.
Couple of hours? Have you ever played a game that precompiles shaders before? It's a couple of minutes.

Don't know what to tell you. It take ages to complete the task on first boot.
Don't have a steam deck but a quick check says you can either download the pre-cached shaders or have it compile them on the deck.

What time is it?

Or you can take my word for it, a Deck user who just installed the game this past week and experienced the compile task first hand.

I’m only keeping my PC for Dota 2 that I still play with my old college friends for some quick fun from time to time. Occasionally play strategy games too.

All my other games are on PS5.

But I’m still planning to upgrade to a midrange PC next year to try Bethesda games if I’ll like them.

is this being pc warrior to the point of detrimental to the pc gaming looks like?

what are you trying achieve by dismissing a perfectly and repeatedly documented problem? not getting your feelings hurt ?

0.000001 of the pc gaming library my ass,

Just complain to the developers and get a snarky Twitter response bro.
Just make a noise about it on forums bro (maybe all those dudes who's PCs it works on can help you).
Just install a Linux OS that is totally alien to 99% of people and play on that bro.
Just wait 6 months for your most hyped game of the year to get fixed bro... maybe.
Just spend hours trying to edit config files that are nothing more than placebo bro.
Just download some API wrappers from Github which have their own host of issues bro
Just install this sketchy ass mod to fix the game bro (which seems to ping to a Russian server every 5 minutes for some reason...)

Or: stop wasting your life and return to monke console gaming - we have stutter free Elden Ring and Unreal Engine games!

Calisto has frigging broke me. It started with Horizon Zero's PC port with shader compilation issues up the wazoo, cyberpunk, then dying light, Elden ring, Spiderman, sackboy all having high as fuck PC requirements, Gotham knights looking like a terrible 2011 open world game while having system requirements higher than what it looks to need. And now we have callisto which is a laggy piece of shit on even the best PCs

If it isn't stuttering and shader compilation it's abnormally high system requirements that blocks off anyone using a 1060 or a 1050ti and prevents midrange from bring able to max out the game easily. The state of PC ports in 2022 is fucking embarrassing, half of the time a new, anticipated game gets buttfucked by a terrible PC port. Can developers not optimize anymore? I got my PC to get better performance than anything else and now I'm getting games laggier than a Kenyan's internet connection.

The only part of this you need to get yourself checked on is thinking 1060s should even play new games anymore at fucking all. Next year we will be at the 5000 series. People keep begging for new jaw dropping visuals in games, and ray tracing to be optimized and standardized. Guess what ? Your Super Nintendo can’t play Zelda Breath of the Wild so stop asking for games like Callisto or Horizon to barely function on that dinosaur trash.

That all said yes, the games you’ve listed suck dongs for working well on PC. Both Gotham Knights and Callisto not using all your CPU correctly, or GPU for GKnights, the shader compilation etc is absurd .

I’m all for better pc development and versions but the 1000 series needs to die as of next year when 5K cards hit.

you are aware that the 1080, 1080ti, Titan X and Titan Xp all are about as powerful as the current consoles right? with the 1060 being around the level of the Series S.
hell the 1080ti and Titan Xp can even run Raytracing at a level that's not far off from them.

you can play many Raytracing enabled games (the ones that support the GTX10 series) with better performance than on the Series S, and some even rivaling the PS5/SX

(reminder that RT Reflections on Ultra is a WAAAY higher setting than what is used on console)

A 1060 is broadly comparable to a PS4 Pro and the vast majority of games are still releasing on last gen consoles. It's not unreasonable to expect these games to still perform acceptably on that card.

I'm glad a got rid of my gaming PC.

It was a headache and a constant FOMO that I didn't have my settings perfect or I've gone too many months without upgrading whatever my current bottleneck is.
That was my nephews more or less exact words. Last time I visited my brother I noticed my nephew had a Series X. Asked him what happened to his "Master Race Rig" (lol) and he said he got tired of dealing with games running goofy on it and optimizing stuff. Said he'd rather just pop the game in the XBOX and have it play. He had a nice PC too.

Not playing CP, but playing MMS (on PC), and it absolutely has this stuttering that people are talking about; I completely forgot about the "shader cache" nonsense which isn't something - I believe - "more power" solves.

. . .you must be one of the lucky ones. Are you not getting stuttering in either game mentioned by folks in this thread?
CP was a mess because I finished it during the launch so that it's not a very good indicator. I haven't tried MMS yet.

Gaming is in a tough spot right now.

You either pay roughly 2k for a 4090 to get a good experience or get a console to play games at 25-30FPS on the equivalent of low/medium PC settings.
What a whole load of nonsense. For 2k you can easily get something like a i5 13600 and RTX3080. The spec list below is only $1869 and it can max out 1440p 120FPS on most of the games out there without breaking any sweat

PC gaming can be truly next-level shit, but instances like this (and others mentioned in the replies) sure do sell the reliability of console gaming.

Used to be that PC was the only place you could reliably play most games in 60FPS, but with that changing in the last few years the appeal of PC gaming has greatly diminished.
Was going to post something similar. PC gaming is incredible, but these days unfortunately it is better to wait for a new game to get patched up before playing. This applies to console games as well. In this situation it seems like only the PS5 version is really up to par. Series X and PC will get fixed, but we have to wait. That is not a knock on the Series X or PC. It is the devs most likely had the PS5 version as the lead platform and that is pretty much it. The game should of been held back some time so all versions shipped in better shape, but that is not the case here and I am sure the devs were forced to release it to make the holiday season.

I have all consoles and a good PC and am currently waiting parts for my new PC build. Gaming on PC is actually pretty incredible, the stuff you can manipulate to get to fit your configuration is fantastic. Being able to turn off/on stuff that is not offered on many console games is also a big plus. But I agree with many, console gaming is just pretty much straight forward. You load the game, mess with a few settings and your done. Nice and simple. On PC depending on how you are, you can do the same...but I think most PC gamers agree being able to tinker with settings to get what works is fun but also gives you a better end result.

This is the one trap that I know personally many PC gamers run into. They get a new game and they spend hours adjusting, benchmarking etc. to dial it in just right for what components they have in the PC. On console, you load the game, mess with a few settings and done. On PC you can do this, but many and mean many people end up in the settings screen seeing what can give them better resolution while maintaining a good framerate. My nephew spent 4 hours messing with Cyberpunk to get it to where he wanted. Granted, he then was very happy and it blows away what a current console can do...but to get to this you have to put in some work.

Now if you are a person that has all the high end shit, you can just set everything to max and still have killer resolution and performance....well unless it is a game like this one that is just f'n broken on PC. But with a powerful rig you can brute force many titles and not deal with a lot of messing around in settings.

That is why PC gaming is not for everyone. In your example about your nephew is exactly what some people love or hate about PC gaming.

To be fair, you really don't have to spend more than 10-15 minutes to dial in the settings. If it takes longer than you are either a perfectionist (understandable) or fumbling around not knowing what you are doing. For the vast majority of PC games and PC gamers, I very rarely hear them spending more than that 10-15 to set up a game.

It's pretty bad, but also I've been playing on PCs for 25 years and there's not a single time I can remember where this haven't been the case. It's always something. The older I got the less I wanted to bother with it. But yeah, always something with drivers, hardware or game needing updates. Though I agree it is probably more due to the developers themselves today than it ever was.

Depends on the person and game of course. I usually dial a game withing 20 minutes. What takes the longest is running the in-game benchmark to see what changes I made and how it effects performance. There are many perfectionists out there that dial that shit to get the best of fidelity and performance. That to me is one big advantage of gaming on PC is that you as the user get that choice on settings for the majority of games.

Yep, definitely. It is the thing I miss most about PC gaming since ei mostly went console for the physical releases.

I never bothered with benchmarks though. I always just changed the settings and see how it changed/affected the game as I was playing it. Usually made it pretty snappy to get it to where I wanted it.

If I want to play a game I can usually get the settings sorted out during the tutorial section. It doesn't get in the way too much. It does a bit, but not too much.

At the same time I double dipped cp so I can play with the benchmark. Only played with it for like half an hour ran better than I thought lol. It can be fun especially if you want to see if you hit the fps/$ balance you were going for on your last upgrade.
