Hogwarts Legacy PC Performance Thread

Still no AMD drivers either - this game is un-optimized. The early section's shouldn't be used as a valid benchmark. When the game opens up, it kinda tanks.

Yes, Hogsmead for me is also a slideshow..

Here are a few things i gathered so far (mostly dislike) :

-- Custom resolutions wont work cause the game is running in Windowed mode (even though it shows fullscreen windowed).
-- Lack of internal downsampling : You need to change your resolution in Windows, then start the game. Its God of War, all over again.
-- 8Gb Vram doesnt cut it. At Medium 1440p - you need more. You will also notice the 'medium' textures.
-- 16Gb Ram is also barely enough - it likes RAM.
-- Max out the sensitivity settings - it feels much much better
-- FSR 1.0 is more performant but less sharp than FSR 2. Someone mentioned FSR 1 looked better somewhere, definitely disagree with that.
-- Ive had several moments where the game launches and stays on a black screen for minutes (with the music in the background )
  1. Its either related to HDR (maybe compiling something)
  2. Or If your game crashes
Its a good game, but it needs more work.

This early access shit is pissing me off. I have the vanilla version preloaded on Steam but cannot play because I didn't buy the deluxe version. Now I see adds saying you can get the game on PS5 early if you preorder any version. So basically making some people pay extra for the early access but giving it to others. Such a bullshit Macro Transaction. I am pretty sure we will see more of this type of "innovation" in the future. I am expecting Preorder before embargo to get game on platform X a week early or buy the DX version to get the same on the other platforms.
From my understanding to play early, it has to be the deluxe version. Copnsole or PC

It's a cunt move by a bunch of cunts.

All PS5 versions are $70 or above. PC versions are $60 and $70 so they made the $70 version early access.

Mmmmh, played 4 hours yersteday without any crash in native.
Activated DLSS3 and frame genaration and now it's crashing after 5 minutes.

And the game has some massive memory leaks

my game crashed twice today in a 30 min time. Im on 7900xt so i dont think it has to do with dlss.

The framecap choices suck. Why not have a frame cap in increments of 10? It jumps from 75 to 120. My 4090 stays locked at 120 most of the time but it occassionaly dips to 110ish and stutters, i would like to cap it at 100 in game. So annoying.

Only a few more hours while those of us fly all over happily in Hogworts.

On several games using UE4, enabling this command on engine.ini can boost performance on AMD cards.
I haven't tried it on this game, but you can.

[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.HZBOcclusion=1

UE4 has a good and fast temporal upscaler, that you can use instead of FSR.
Just add these to the engine .ini
And set the screen percentage resolution. At 1440p, 77% gives good results.

[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.TemporalAA.Upsampling=1
r.ScreenPercentage=100
r.Tonemapper.Sharpen=0
r.PostProcessAAQuality=6
r.Upscale.Quality=5

New drivers but no mention of Hogwarts but apparently updates nvidia inspector with the game profile so we can turn on rbarr

https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/geforce-528-49-whql-driver-download.html

EDIT*

528.49 has a 'Game Ready Driver Profile' for Hogwart's Legacy, just not listed in release notes

Code:
Profile "Hogwarts Legacy"
ShowOn GeForce
ProfileType Application
Executable "phoenix-win64-test.exe"
Executable "hogwartslegacy.exe"
Setting ID_0x105e2a1d = 0x00000004

Steam deck just doesn't have the juice for these big AAA's.
i disagree. is it the best way to play? no

is it stunning that we can play a AAA title like this in portable form? i'd argue yes. sure, the resolution looks ps3/early-ps4 but locked in at 40 fps feels pretty good to play. certainly better than it will on Switch.

That fixed it for me. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

"Saw some people having trouble using rumble on dualsense or dualshock 4.

I found the fix, there is native suport, but the game will only recognize the first ever input you use, so if you start playing in USB and the go to bluetooth you lose rumble support. Switching between controllers will also cause rumble to stop working.

The solution is to close the game, go to: C:\Users\yourprofile\AppData\Local\Hogwarts Legacy\Saved
and delete "pc_info.json" then restart the game.

Rumble support will resume for whatever input you are using when you launch it.

Also, activate steam input should be on in the game controller settings."

No Dualsense support which is a massive shame it’s used extensively in the PS5 version and feels brilliant. Lots of nice touches really hope they patch the pc version to have it.

It’s already supported on PC. You just have to disable “PlayStation controller support” in Steam so it passes your DualSense directly to the game.

Sounds counterintuitive but I think Steam is throwing up an abstraction layer in its “support” models.

Edit: I believe it also has to be wired. Won’t work over BT.

I don't think its full dualsense support though. Rumble, yeah but definitely no adaptive triggers. Tried everything, no dice.

Made the improved RT ini edit and played for another hour. What a difference it makes to the AO.

Also some observations while in the open world:

  • Tried it without DLSS frame gen with RT on - intermittent stuttering
  • Tried it with DLSS Balanced, no frame gen, RT on - intermittent stuttering
  • Tried it without RT, without frame gen and without DLSS - no stuttering
  • Tried it with RT, DLSS Quality, with frame gen on - no stuttering
  • Tried it with RT, no DLSS upscaling, frame gen on - no stuttering
In summary - if you want to play with RT on without DLSS frame gen then you will experience stuttering. At least that is true with my specs anyway.

Turns out the game is severly CPU limited when RT is turned on (even at 4k). This is especially prevalent in populated outdoor areas, similar to the Witcher 3. So that will explain the stuttering and why frame generation makes such a big difference in this case.

It basically hits a stead 90--100 outside of Hogwarts. Playing around and this supports photo mode directly through NVIDIA control (alt-F2). Pretty robust and you can control all the angles. Going to practice with one shot shortly.

Wondering if I can do 1440/Ultra/RT with a 3080 Ti :messenger_confused:
I can’t on a 4K tv. I have it set to DLSS Balanced with everything maxed and it stutters quite a bit when entering new areas and cutscenes. However I’m only running an OC’d 8700k (32gb of ram)

I've noticed some significant drops when outdoors. I tried capping the framerate, but it seems to target half whatever value is selected. Bizarre. Thankfully, nothing game breaking.

Different strokes for different folks but I think playing modern games at PS3 levels is too large a compromise for a lot of people.

So tried the game for around 4 hours, 4080/32 gb ddr5 6000/13600k all stock, i tried to achieve 4k60.

First i tried going native4k with dlsaa (basically dlss AA without upscaling, technically the best AA method), everything ultra and only rtx reflections on, it was perfect in the introduction but not so much inside the school where it had some occasional stuttering or frame loss (i forgot to turn on the framecounter so i don't know what was between the 2).
I had frame generation greyed out so i think it was disabled, not sure why.

Then i tried dlss quality with fram gen and it look a bit worse but inside the school seems to reduce to stuttering to a minimum butcin hogsmeade i still have some hiccups, nothing too problematic but not absolutely perfect neither, glat to say that frame gen feels good, if there is additional input lag added it was almost unnoticeable.

The only 2 bug i had was the protagonist voice if you chose the 2 lower piched voices, it sound like an eco or inside a tunnel during conversations, i fixed by returning to the pitch in the middle.

And sometimes during cinematics there was like rare "half second" accelleration, for lack of better words while using dlssa, they disappeared while using dlss quality+framegen.

Is it normal that i had frame gen greyed out if i don't use dlss upscaling? It should work to get better framerates at native resolution, not only when using dlss upscaling...

(I was still using a form of dlss for the AA so it is not clear)

Overall it runs like dead space remake, perfect for 90% of the time with occasional stutter here and there with ds running a bit worse.

All of this was tested without the new drivers so i still have an ace on my sleeve to play tonight when i'm gonna return home from work.

The graphic is as uneven as it comes, some incredible vistas and some meh ones, some very nice models and some very poor ones, some very detailed textures and some ps3 textures, overall very good looking but nothing more than a mid\good ps4 game in 4k tbh, also some occasional texture loading a bit later here and there.

P..s if rtx is the problem then i'm just gonna disable them tonight.

That is a shame, cause FG + DLAA would result in a great IQ and good performance on a 4090. Problem is, DLAA does not work with FG on. :/

Anyway this is still a kind of early access, tomorrow they will hopefully iron out most of the issues this game is suffering from.

Here are a few tweaks for Windows that can reduce stuttering:

The most important is disabling Control Flow Guard, since this is a DX12 game.
Open Exploit Protection via your Windows Search bar. Then, click On the Program Settings Tab and click On The “+ Add programs to customise”. Then, click On Choose Exact File Path, find game's exe and open it. Afterwards, you’ll have to navigate its Program Settings, scroll down to “Control Flow Guard”, put check mark in “Override System Settings”, turn it Off and Apply. Restart your PC.

Next, open the game. Then the Task Manager. Look for the game executable, then click on Open File Location. This is important, because UE4 creates 2 exe files for each game and we want the right one.
Right click on the game's executable, then properties, then the Compatibility tab. Then click on Disable Full Screen Optimizations.
Then click on Override high DPI scaling Behavior. Choose Application. Apply these settings and restart the game.

Lol more windows fuckery...

Is this the type of stuff that you can left turned on for any future game or is it something to do on a game per game basis and i have to disable it when i'm done with HL?

The Control Flow Guard thing can be disable globally, but it's not recommended for safety.
But, yes, you have to do this for every game.
But it's worth it for most games.

Had to put it to 1440p with dlss quality to get decent frames. 3070 with a 5700x and 32gb ram. Sometimes it just drops to shit frames, 10-15fps. For 10 seconds and then its back to normal.

Is this because of Denuvo trash?

Rt off, settings on high.

Now ask me do I give a F**k?

It's okay to say fuck on this forum mate.
However it'd be nice if you didn't make claims about being able to max out the game at 1440p on a 7 year old GPU and get solid 60 fps considering there are 2x more powerful cards struggling to achieve the same.

If it's worth for any game why i can't just leave them on?

Also what do you mean safety? I'm not gonna touch anything fir small gains that can fuck up something...

Control Flow Guard is a security feature. But it causes an overhead when running files.
If disabled for games, it doesn't matter much. But for other apps, it's best to keep on.
That is why it's recommended to just disable CFG per game. Not globally.

Does anyone has good hdr ingame settings for an lg c1??

It looked too washed out without touching anything and i'm shit at setting this stuff because i never know how it should suppose to look.

Maybe at 4K but at 1440 the game is barely using my cpu. It hovers around 5 -10 % according to the amd overlay. Around 40 - 50 % gpu utilization and 12 gig vram .

Select DLSS in Upscale Type but then choose None in Upscale Mode. You will be able to turn on frame generation and DLSS won't be activated.

If i do this trick can i still use dlsaa from the AA setting menu? Because if i use any type of upscale it grey out the AA options (i think)

And that's exactly what a CPU bottleneck looks like when you're getting performance issues like the one this game has.

I got it capped at 60 fps though. I have seen weird stuttering when going into a new area when fading into a cut scene and an odd crash 3 times.
