Why do you think Playstation is Hiding their First party games?

The original rumoured justification for not having a showcase last year was that the content wasn’t ready.

HellDivers had a trailer ready to go months and months ago.
Haven did a CG trailer
Firewalk did a CG trailer
Bungie did a CG trailer

Only Spider-Man had gameplay.

I don’t understand why they bothered this time. Spider-Man should have had a State of Play.
Exactly. They actually tarnished the PlayStation Showcase name/brand with this. Should have been 2 state of Plays. One for 3rd party and one for Spiderman.

It would have been nice to see new games that we haven't seen, but in the past, when they have done that—showed an announcement trailer—the internet goes into a frenzy, but this only goes to show that no matter what Sony or MS do, this will happen.

A new Uncharted, Warhawk/Starhawk would have really got me excited but it's not like I don't have games to enjoy right now.

Yes and by the look of this showcase we aren't going to get the real heavy hitters for at least another 2 years. It's going to be an end of the generation banger.

I nearly shit myself thinking the Snake Eater trailer was an CGI Uncharted announcement. Lmao.

Already calls for another showcase

This is true.

But tbh isn't that just a return to normal practice after a couple of years of Covid lockdowns and it's knock-on effects on game production? Prior to 2020 we would have expected 2 or 3 big presentations from some combination of E3, Gamescom, Paris Games Week, Tokyo Games Show, PlayStation Experience, etc.

The rest of 2023 is pretty full and PS5s are flying off the shelves so there may not be an immediate need to show anything a bit further out. But a late summer/early fall presentation talking about 2024 and beyond would seem sensible, or a PSX in December.

If, and it’s a big if, Sony is hiding their games and waiting for MS to blow their load, then what they showed earlier should be excused. If not, then I guess that’s all they have in the immediate future.

While it’s not great, it’s not too shabby either.

Love Warhawk on PS3, would love to see it return

I don't think they're hiding them I just think a lot of them probably aren't ready to be shown. I think the whole theory of them holding their cards close to the vest so they can whip out some mega bangers against Microsoft in the future when necessary is just stupid. The truth probably is just simply that this is what they have cooking at the moment with a few awesome things not shown yet because they aren't ready. Like Wolverine and whatever is next for Santa Monica team. So we may actually be looking at a drought of new single player IP over the next couple years who knows?

1st because they showed spider man 2 and did not want to screw it’s debut.

2nd to counter attack any Microsoft announcements.

The biggest surprise for me was the complete lack of surprises. They couldn't muster ONE new reveal from an internal studio??? IMO, if they had more games to show they would've had this showcase after June 11th to steal Microsoft's thunder. I know it's easy to say that this is arrogant Sony, and it is, but surely they know Microsoft is about to unveil some new games on top of an already stacked list of known games, right?

But can we talk about the other elephant in the room here?
WHERE IN THE FUCK IS PSVR2 1ST PARTY SUPPORT???

The only theory is that they might have another showcase later to announce this rumoured PS5 diskless and maybe Pro version or something.

Would be similar to today's but with the first party output.

That's why I think they didn't show everything, the lack of PSVR2 during their showcase is insane, especially for a device that costs 800 bucks in Canada.

I certainly didn’t need anymore CG trailers holy crap.

Nothing wrong with use of CG in trailers per se, the problem is when that's all you rely on.

The big flashy CG teaser leading into real-time gameplay quick cuts format is dynamite for big reveals. Doesn't happen often though.

Why? They have FF16 due soon. Then the holiday 3rd party games like Fifa, Cod, Assassins Creed etc will arrive and Spiderman 2. There is also Helldivers 2 and other smaller games.
Why blow your load now?
Also let's see how the MS showcase plays out. They are holding things in reserve just incase.

Blow their load as in show everything they have? of course not. Showing fans what they can look forward to from a first party perspective? Hell yeah. We've been waiting for 2 years for Sony to get us really excited for what Phase 2 of next gen will look like.

Tom alreay alluded to the fact Sony have a lot to show but somehow chose to have a PS Showcase focus on 3rd party games instead. Had I known this was going to be the case I would have never tuned in.
PS Showcase reads to me like 'Get ready to see what the best of PS can do'.

I'm disappointed we didn't get to see anything other than Spider-Man 2 which in itself looked like shit compared to the initial reveal trailer. In fact it looks like shit compared to some of Insomiac's own games like Rift Apart.

Like what the fuck is this?

Since several years ago Sony instead has many shows across the year and on top of that makes announcements in blog posts. Sony will continue making State of Plays announcing stuff there.

Sure, Sony could get material to make another showcase this year with both announced and unannounced games. But that would mean like a year without big great stuff to show in other State of Play streams.

I mean, they obviously have a bunch of games in various stages of development, that should be of no secret to anyone. I just found it odd that they didn't show more. The complete lack of 1st party PSVR2 announcements was just disappointing.

Here's to hoping they do another one in the fall to right some of these wrongs, and for the love of christ, announce a PS5 Slim.

They had reveals from 3 internal studios: Haven, Firewalk and Bungie

Because they don't need to because Xbox is a complete shitshow. It's that simple.

So they've decided, unfortunately for us, to keep their powder dry until such a time as they actually need it.

If M shows:

Fable
Avowed
New forza
Perfect dark
New gears
Starfield

They are gonna win the showcase battle with ease.

Unless sony know exactly what M is gonna show (not sure how), that's a big fucking risk to take.

Sony fanboys should root for M right now, they are the only one that can put a fire under jimbo's ass.

The new wave of games is simply not ready.
That's all. They have Spiderman 2 and Helldivers 2 this year.
The rest is all 2024 stuff and beyond and this puts in perspective why there wasn't a 2022 showcase. You can't force all teams to use CGI to announce their stuff as that would be pointless and it wouldn't have been a good idea to skip a showcase in 2023 as well.

There will be other chances to talk about already announced games (Rise of Ronin, Death Stranding 2, Silent Hill 2, FFVII:R, TLOU Online) and announce a few more. Maybe in late summer, announcements will be made when they feel ready.

The idea that they couldn't show stuff like Factions and DS2 *even if they wanted to* is implausible imo.

You can definitely show a vertical slice of a game 2 years from release. That's standard. So you're effectively saying they have nothing else releasing until at least summer 2025.

That's almost certainly not the case, therefore they must have decided for some reason to delay reveals until closer to release.

They will win it, but there's no way they show all those.

It'll be Starfield, Forza, and maybe one of those others. Max of two.

And yeah, I'm definitely pulling for Xbox to get things moving. Apart from anything else, I would actually like to have a reason to own one again.

The push for first party GAAS type games was obvious... you all can try to spin this showcase and create theories why the first party single player bangers wasn't there but Jimbo has been saying for quite some time now what is sony new strategy and they even released a document recently that shows the importance they are giving to this live service MP games and the new distribution of resources.

I think we all just ignored him far too long or dismissed the gaas push as a side project that would not affect their games output, this conference should serve as quite a wake up call for all of us about the future of playstation amd their plans.

It is simply possible that Sony has been finally hit by COVID delays. While a lot of their released games were delayed, they were still late in development and thus affected less. But new stuff was seriously affected.

Aside that, it is possible that there will be another showcase later this year. After all they will need to announce the rumored PS4 Slim or whatever.

I'll put on my tin foil hat and say they're saving all their ammo for after Xbox's show. So maybe another showcase later in the year?

A part of Sony's infamous "bleed them out strategy" as HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 once put it.

The truth is. They don’t need to. Multi platform games and established IPs are plentiful this year. This year alone we have FFXVI and Spider-Man 2. That’s just PS5 exclusive and not they typical 3rd party games we get yearly and etc. They just released a statement saying they expect a decline in first party sales and it’s probably because of over saturation.

I truly believe they just need one GAAS hit to end the year off. However, as far as announcements and dates they really don’t need to show anything until the fall and then unload the clip.

Development times were already long but Covid really threw a wrench in a smoother transition into next gen. Hence why we are still seeing last gen versions of games to recoup those cost. If this PS5 revision is real. That’s another reason to hold off.

I think it's a mix of factors. Many projects are just not ready, they don't feel confident in showing unpolished footage, making super polished vertical slices takes a few months of work and they don't want to do that, they know there will be other chances to announce things during the year.
As you said I think it's unlikely that we won't hear about TLOU Online, DS2, Stellar Blade, Rise of Ronin and other third party exclusives like FF7:R and SH2 this year.
They decided that this was not the right moment to showcase them.

hiding? Who’s says they’re hiding anything?

PS studios are run by monkeys. 3party is where it’s at.

No reason to rush out reveals if they don't need to.

Since Xbox has negative momentum, they don't really need to.
Exactly my thought, when the competition puts no pressure on you they can hold things back.

Plus Sony is in no rush to show us games.. they have plenty in the pipeline.

That doesn't hold out water when they rushed out reveals for 4 GAAS titles with CGI trailers and zero gameplay.

Who cares how they choose to reveal games. I don’t look too much into it.
Sony is the Standard when it comes to releasing games. They know what they have to do and how to do it. On PS
