In honor of Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary, GAF Plays: Final Fantasy games

The only final fantasy I own is FF7 on PSN. Is it really worth it? No lies and fanboyisn!

Probably not worth it to start with VII. I think IX is a much better sell. I talked one of my friends into buying it last year and it was his first FF. He absolutely loved it and had no real experience with JRPGs.

I found something on gamefaqs about it here. http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/562865-final-fantasy-vi/faqs/13573 There's 64 groups altogether? This is useful, reloading the game adds 13 to the group number too.

Thanks for sharing that info!

You're playing the SNES version in an emulator, right? If so, then there's an even easier way. http://www.rpglegion.com/ff6/vmf/index.htm - it can take your save file or a save state and tell you exactly what to do to get the monster you want.

Well its the first one I played 12 years ago and I'm still addict to all FF products! XD

I saw some people play VI (Which was III) on SNES back then but VII is the first one I really got to play entirely. Great story imo, classic RPG gameplay, epic soundtrack, neat graphics for its time. Well, I can say anything, still, its all in the taste! I'd say that if you like good old RPGs, VII is an experience you should at least try.

I just bought VI three years ago and it's quite something too. I can't believed I've turned my back on this one for so long. It's amazing how Squaresoft was able to make people feel the emotions through sprites and text boxes.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I'd say IX first, then X. That's how my FF love started out.

Bonus pic! Which would be the most painful? I'm guessing Aeris's method.

Its the FFVII gameplay variety list!

- Mako Reactor No.1
10 minute countdown. If ya fail its game over, an "alternate ending" prolly no more than thirty minutes into the game! Overly generous with the time limit even if you did have to go back and grab Jesse but still rather unique for a rpg.
- Train
15 second countdown. 15 seconds per train car isn't bad... unless ya want extra items from some people on the train or to just talk with others. No game over for not making it to the front car. Instead you'll be doing some extra running around through an enemy infested subway.
- Mako Reactor No.5
Sliiiide! Grind your way down to the bottom of the several floor high structure or go interact with a long pipe looking thing and slide down hassle free! Your choice!
- Sector 5 Church
Puzzle Escort Mission! Tell Aeris to hang on, fight, or run away. Her having to fight would be a pain so you must quickly figure out which barrel to knock down up to three times.
- Aeris's House
Stealth Sequence?! Don't run, walk! And watch where you walk by keeping away from the walls. Otherwise Aeris'll catch ya an its back to your room. Isn't Cloud to old to get grounded?
- Wall Market
You're the girl, bro! Its up to you how girly Cloud gets. While this mostly amounts to just running around talking to people (and hot-tubbing it with buff guys) whats abit different gameplay wise is a squatting contest for a wig! [] X O, [] X O... win, lose, or draws each nets ya a different wig. Can ya keep the rhythm flowing?
- The Great Wall
Catch that wire! Just a minor timing puzzle. Grab the wire at the right time to swing across the gap. Miss it and ya fall down alil ways.

Now tell me something. Were the first couple of hours of any other FF game nearly as crazy as this? Or did they mostly amount to text & grindan? An there's much more yet to come!

I liked how everytime you cast Fire on him he says OUCH! Seafood Soup! Ultros is a translation goof, right? In the GBA release he's Orthros.

Ultros goofiness was the only redeeming parts of FFVI for me. Much love for that silly slimy squid!

IX has all the little allusions to the games that came before it. I'd almost recommend IX later to get the most out of it. Plus, it's easy to fall victim to the slow battle speed.

X is also a great place to start. Really engaging battle system that makes it a kick to play.

Playing FFVIA. About to leave for Crescent Island.

The soundtrack...sounds fine. Don't what people are talking about when they complain about it. It doesn't sound any worse or even that much different than the original. If anything it sounds better without the reverb the SNES had.

Or maybe I just like the music better than the SNES sound chip.

Just bought FFVI on PSN today. Never played it before.
I'm hoping PS1 support comes soon to Vita so I can play this baby on the go.

I wonder what is GAF highest record at rope skipping in FF9? In my latest walkthrough it was 5256 jumps.

Not a world record, by any chance? Haha

Since I'm going mostly portable (the PSP I'm currently using doesn't have CFW, unfortunately), I'm just going to use screens I find around or that I have from other playthroughs for when I talk about where I am in a game. I did that in the Zelda thread and no one had a problem with it. Of course, I might take pics from my portables just as an update for where I am in terms of levelling, etc.

LOL, so don't hesitate to go low-budget like me.

Consider CFWing your PSP. You can get temporary CFW these days that allows you to access PSN, and I think PSP firmware updates are totally done at this point so you're not likely to have any future trouble.

Tutorial for CFWing any PSP that isn't CFWed:
1. Update to Firmware 6.60 officially.
2. http://wololo.net/downloads/index.php/download/929 <-- go here and download
3. Extract the FastRecovery and PROUPDATE folders to Memory Stick:/PSP/GAME/
4. Run "Pro Update".
5. You can now erase Pro Update.
6. When you boot your PSP, it will be in OFW. Run "Fast Recovery" to switch to CFW. It takes less than ten seconds.

The whole process takes 5 minutes or less, it's no risk because it runs at the software level rather than modifying crazy boot stuff, you boot to OFW by default, the CFW still has PSN access. Yay!

Does this mean you don't have to fiddle about with your battery anymore (on a PSP-2000)?
That's the reason I went back to the official firmware. It simply wasn't worth the effort.

Edit: It only took me two minutes and I now have CFW and an empty 8 GB memory card. Thanks Stumpokapow!

The only mainline FF I'm sure to play this year is FF13-2 but there's an appropriate thread for that one. I've been meaning to play through Final Fantasy Tactics for the first time on the phone for a while now. I'm still trudging through the tutorial but maybe I'll take screenshots and make some comments here after I start for real (it's not from the main series but I assume it's ok).

I'm in.

So which one should i play first, GAF?

I own every mainline FF and some spin-offs (Warriors of Light, Tactics GBA, Crystal Chronicles, Vincent FF 7 spinoff).

Okay GAF, so I'm playing FF1 on the iphone and loving it! Is there any significant difference between the PSP 20th anniversary versions of FF1 and 2 and the iphone versions, or are they pretty much identical? I'm particularly interested in the extra 'Emperor of Heaven' chapter to FF2 you get when you complete it, is it in the iOS version as well?

Also, I noticed FF3 (DS version) has been ported to iOS, for the rather hefty price tag of £9.99. Anyone know if it's better, worse than or identical to the DS original?

The plan is to do a run on all the 8-bit games, and then maybe start the FFIV Complete Collection on PSP when I'm done. :)

I refuse to call this lobster a boss. (Also, I forgot to take a screenshot.)

I always wondered how many people miss this.

Siren makes a slightly better claim to boss-hood, but still goes down real easy.

From what little I played of the iOS port of FF3, at least on iPad 2, it's actually quite a good port. It even lacks the slowdown that the DS version has, and the controls are probably the best possible controls for a game like this on a touchscreen-only device.

just bought FFVIII in honor of this thread. Only FF post 7 I haven't finished.

Any tips on the gameplay? I'm remembering that levelling didn't help that much and junction system was a pain :(

I'm gonna replay ffix, I liked ff7's combat better but I don't want to look for the discs so I'll play that after.

It's actually my first time playing it on the actual playstation, played it on the emulator before, doesn't look so bad on a ps2.

Enemies' levels scale with you. It isn't that big of a deal, there's no reason to avoid battles or anything like some people will suggest, but know that if you do, you aren't really hurting yourself per se.

The biggest tip I have is to junction magic to your magic stat. This affects how many spells you will draw from enemies, and makes drawing much quicker and much more painless. It's amazing how many people miss this and complain about how drawing sucks because you only get 1-2 spells at a time from an enemy.

Beyond that, I would suggest getting into the card game if you can, because winning it can get you cards that you can turn into spells via Quetzacoatl's card mod ability.

It's really easy on PS1/PS2 coz you can skip FMV's and even boost load times on PS2. I did it on PS3 psn ver (US) in 10:13 with lot of mistakes. Not sure if it is possible on PAL ver, very big difference because of 60Hz vs 50Hz refresh rate. Already noticable in the beginning, running to first moogle and saving is 1 min slower than NTSC.
I posted link to my PS3 Excalibur 2 run on 2 page of this thread.
Is that in-game clock time or not? If the in-game clock is also 5/6 of the speed it should be doable. Then again speeding up the clock to reflect the actual time sounds like a typical evil PAL conversion (racing games were the annoying ones as its basically, "you're not going to do as well as others in Time Attack/you can compete in your own sandbox" then again having improved reactions essentially would also be unfair)

I have an itch to get going with Final Fantasy as well, I'm just really bad at all the management of equipment and boss battles, it takes such a long time.

Though, I really loved Final Fantasy X, Crisis Core VII, VIII and XII. I have not played any of the others yet, but I'm thinking of FF VII and FF IX on PSN and FF III on iPad. FF VI should be one of the best, if not the best I heard.

Mid boss!
I hate how you basically can't do anything against status effects in this game. A petrify->confusion->petrify combo killed me instantly in that fight. At least you can retry any fight right away.

Just wanted to jump on the bandwagon, I started playing the iOS version of FF1 some time ago, my plan to play every numbered FF game (and some extras, like CC:FF7, X-2, RW, XIII-2 and hopefully Type-0) through the year. I'm actually eager to finish FF1 and start playing FF2, since I never got a chance to play it! Same with FF3, so that'll be a new experience.

I might as well jump in with FFIV for PSP since I just picked it up in that Best Buy sale. It's one of the few I've never beaten (only made it a couple hours or so in I believe), so this should be fun.

Major thanks for Stump for that quick cfw guide, now there will be screen shots of this adventure.

Only 19?! I totally coulda done over 20 I swear! Oh and zombies? In MY FFVII? It's more likely th... oh wait. They're just really perverted men -.-

Classic action movie escape followed later by uh... inspirational words from Barret!

Guys you need to stop with the cool poses and stop Aeris from being bred with a dog!

Nightmare fuel doesn't bother Barret one bit! Its a rule of thumb that videogame heroes have a high tolerance for sick, twisted crap.

Controlling people with fear huh? I can't hate on Rufus. He's to darn cool!

Is my eyesight going south or is there an ever so slight difference in quality between these pics?

Fought Rufus at the 3 hour mark and made it to the world map at 3:12. Woulda been quicker if I wasn't dumb an knew my way around the Shinra HQ better -_-;;

Finally! That dungeon goes on and on and on...Now that this is over I can look forward to the much superior dungeons of the last crystal segment.

Major thanks for Stump for that quick cfw guide, now there will be screen shots of this adventure.
I have to give my thanks, too. I didn't think it'd be that easy by now. Is there a solution for the DSi (XL) that's as easy?

The first half of VI wasn't bad, but the game completely falls apart in
the World of Ruin.
Chrono Trigger handled the non-linear second half much better than VI.

Hojo's forehead in the in-game model always amazed me. And I didn't recall Jenova having a boob eye. Yikes!

I'm always surprised when I hear people say they don't like to use Gau. I LOVE using him. He can learn more powerful spells earlier than any of your other characters if you have the right Rages. Leap at a Templar to learn Fire 2, for example, or Rhinox (or was it Rhinotaur?) to learn Life 3. Yes, whether or not he uses those in a given turn is still random, but still. Great, great character. Uaaaoooo~
