Sonic 4 Episode 2 gameplay trailer

It's a shame that Dimps went from making a decent 2D Sonic game with the proper physics (Sonic Advance) to making subpar 2D Sonic games with the physics changed so much. How does that even work? Was it the change to Sonic Rush? Laziness?

The first Sonic Advance I feel is the closest any modern Sonic has come to the Genesis era greatness. Really underrated I think.

Yeah pretty much. Due to the constant gameplay cuts I we can't really put a finger on how improved the physics are.

I do like some of the level design this go 'round, although the booster > spring > spring > booster gameplay is still present and homing attack will make things too easy...again.

I think in some of the clips the game is in Co-op mode because Tails is ahead of Sonic in one clip while in another Tails is jumping independently from Sonic.

Dimps has never been particularly good at level design. Even Sonic Advance, the only game where they sorta got the physics right, was a terrible game partly because of how terrible the level design was. That game was so boring. And the level design got less and less interesting going forward. When Sonic 4 came along they went "oh, people want levels with unique features!" and then flooded levels with so many gimmicks that they ruined the levels.

Mr. Sega,

Yeah, fuck Advance's level design. Playing through that again recently killed a few not quite-childhood memories.

Eh, besides BOOSTERS EVERYWHERE that looked a lot more original and fun than I remember Episode 1 being. Still cautiously excited until we can get a clearer gameplay video and a taste of some of the music
or if someone leaks the entire game again
.

Please let the music be good.

Still looks like a bunch of springs and boosters. Rolling looks to be a lot better though.
Well, that's clearly what they wanted to show off (springs and booster gameplay).

It ... looks like a Sonic console game developed by Dimps, alright. Still skeptical here, despite the BG art looking better than the last game's. Level design looks better, but not by much.

I'm not very impressed, tbh.

Still has the stupid bloody homing attack.
Still looks very similar to episode one.
Still disappointed with Sega's destruction of a once great IP.
Someone has yet to finish Sonic Generations, I guess.

Also, regarding the homing attack
Classic Sonic learns it at the end of Generations. Better yet, he learns it during the halfway point of Sonic Generations 3DS and then learns Boost during the ending of that version (also developed by Dimps).

Looks like shit. Will not buy.
Did Sonic 2006 break you yet?

I wonder if they'll make the homing attack more like how it worked for Classic Sonic in this game; still overpowered but at least when you abuse it or use it with nothing else around it instantly slows you down to a halt. Also helped Generations' levels were good enough where while time-running them there were only a few situations where the homing attack would've cut off a few seconds; more often than not it was just quicker to learn to time your jumps like in the old games.

Made me envision this

Things I liked:

*The level art and graphics overall look fantastic. Episode I was boring, unoriginal, and just plain bad. The animations including Sonic's running animation are a definite step up from his awkward and weird set of animations from Episode I, overall the art in this game looks genuinely fantastic, truly a successor to the original games.

*The zones looks really diverse and with a lot of variety to the level design and aesthetics. The trailer showcased 2 levels, but it could have easily been showcasing 3 or even 4. Despite the low level count, the acts seem to differ things up by changing the environment, time of day, and the geometry all together. I'm excited to see how levels mold into one another.

*Level design looks a bit better than Episode I from what I saw, if not by much. Stuff like going into the background of the level ala Donkey Kong Country Returns, legitimate platforming, and the underwater sections all look fun and intuitive.

*Sonic & Tails' co-op abilities look to genuinely add to the gameplay, such as having Tails help you swim faster and fly.

*Some problems SEEM to be fixed, such as uncurling and such. It's possible that the physics and other things have been changed for the better as well, but there's no real way to see.

Things I don't like:

*Health bar enemies. Why? In a game about speed and keeping your momentum we don't need gigantic nears that take 3 hits to kill, no reason.

*Level design doesn't look THAT much different. There are parts that seem better and exciting and fun, but then there are parts that are clearly Sonic being propelled through the level for 5+ seconds. No fun, classic Sonic rarely ever had speed boosters and springs telling him where to go.

*Info TVs are obtrusive and take away player involvement and figuring out exactly what to do on their own.

*Only 4 zones.

Shame, it looked not-undisgusting in the stills.

SPRING SPRING SPRING BOOST BOOST SPRING SPRING BOOST HOMING ATTACK ON PATH OF ENEMIES SPRING BOOST SPRING BOOST

Welcome back, Dimps.

why the fuck can sonic run through walls face first still

Sonic running down the slope near the start did not make him faster *RAGE*

not sure if want.

Welcome back, Dimps.

Woah now, come on. They added true innovation to the Dimps formula
Now you can mash the homing button at health bar enemies!!

It still looks like it plays more like episode 1 then classic Sonic. It's the little things that most people most likely won't even notice. The way the jumps look slow/floaty, Sonic's speed seems to top out too soon again (running down the hill section), super space astro jump off of an incline, and just the way Sonic seems to react to loops and hills.

It's nice uncurling and stops when the d-pad is released Sonic is gone because they were by far my biggest issues though. This time I'll try the demo before buying to decide if those changes are enough. Every time I played episode 1 I just got annoyed because of how shitty Sonic handled.

You are willingly and happily playing Sonic 2006.

You will buy this.

I'll make a LTTP thread about it in 5 years, then. There is no way I'm going back to the Sonic 4 engine after experiencing Generations.

As opposed to going from Colors to Sonic 06, which is an improvement.

How can someone with whom I share such great taste in games always make me sad? That Majora's Mask thread, man...shit was a work of art.

Anth0ny...you used to be cool.

Anyone who prefers '06 over Colors has ZERO taste in games.

Going from Sonic 2006 to nearly any game ever would be an improvement. And yes, I own Sonic 2006. Game's glitchy as hell and not remotely fun. There might be something wrong with you.

I think it looks very fun, never got all the hate against Sonic 4.
Though I think they sorta failed with the whole "episodic" format. Too much time has passed and this looks like a new Sonic game compared to episode 1.
In order to retain the feeling that the episodes are actually part of a whole they should've remade episode 1 with the new engine and sold them together or something I think.
I was afraid this was going to happen when they announced it to be episodic.

Anth0ny's statement doesn't faze me. I've heard quite a few die hard Sonic Adventure fans say the same thing.

Not that I understand it at all, but it's not too uncommon to hear that in the Sonic fanbase.

The failed with the episodic format by doing it in the first place. It has been 16 years between Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 4: Episode 1's release. If they had just taken their time and developed a full game that's a true sequel to S3&K then it would've been fine.

I don't know why you blokes get so bent out of shape over Anth0ny liking 06 more than Colors. Both are shitty games, who cares which he likes more?

eh? feels and looks like Episode I. While I can say I enjoyed it, I know that its a bad game but this doesn't look any different from that. Oh well, in the end Im going to buy it anyway... *sigh*

Weren't you cursing Sonic 2006 into oblivion a few days ago since the billiards were giving you a stupid time?

Silver's gameplay drove me to insanity. I needed to ease my nerves, so I played Dark Souls, and have been playing it since.

I still enjoyed Sonic and Shadow's story more than Colors. But I think I'm going to do a lets play, or at least make a thread, about giving Sonic Colors a second chance. In a post Generations, post Sonic 06 world.

edit: billychu understands me

I like Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu because the narrative kicks ass.

Your dislike of Final Fantasy V makes me sad too. :/

The billiards level took a lot out of me too. It was so bad, and I can't believe that thing got into the game.

You'll have to start the RTTP sometime after you finish 2006 completely, including Last Story! :D

Definitely looks better than Ep1 but it still looks... off.

And I really wish they'd pull the camera back a bit.
If you look at the part where he's running down that big hill in the Aquatic Ruins-like Zone, the camera's pulled out quite a bit. I think the camera in this game may be more dynamic like it was in Generations.

Sonic 06 looks better than Episode 1.
Why do I agree with this?

Buy me a Fire Emblem game so I can finally see what the hubbub is about.
I'd recommend my favourite: Fire Emblem 4: Seisen no Keifu (Genealogy of the Holy War) for the SNES. The plot is fantastic, and the villain's one of my favourite game villains ever.

Rekka no Ken isn't bad (and I prefer it over the Sacred Stones), but I really love Seisen no Keifu. Thracia 776 (FE5) is really great too.

I liked what I saw in the trailer. I think it will be better than episode 1 but that bar was set pretty low already.

I look forward to seeing some actual playthroughs soon.
